That don't look like a Florida dog to me  ??? Good looking pup though.
A lot of people sell dogs and say they are Florida dogs cause a lot of people will buy them.
As far as color they can be yellow, red, black, white, brindle, leopard, black & tan, creme colored.

I got a video from Cary or Gary Lightsey many years back. His family were Florida ranchers and had a spot on Brahma Island where they did hog hunts. In the video he used 3 dogs he called cracker curs. i think 2 of them had bob-tails. They were fairly leggy, but pretty blocky built with block heads. They were yellow w/o much dark or white markings. looked like they could have had a little bulldog blood in there somewhere. Their hunters were shooting the boars from in front of the dogs. they would definitely put a mouth on a hog to stop it. He had a real good handle on them. good looking dogs. i think they moved their operation to another state due to urban encroachment in thier area.

They still own Brahma Island. No worries about encroachment there. It's in the middle of Lake Kissimmee. Only way to get there is by boat.

I've seen a hunt or 2 on TV with the Lightseys on Brahma Island,....it doesn't get much better than hunting on your own island seems to me. I do remember a bit about the dogs but not much.

Most of the true FL curs I've been around were indescript.... not a "type" but a "built for pupose " description.... truthfully, most true Florida curs I've seen were ugly as hell... bred down after many years of inbreeding... thinking they were "locking in traits".... rolleyes .... trait's locked in and lost generations ago...

When I think of a "model" Fl cur, I see a Partin dog... the head is unmistakable.... big doe eyes, round muscled "boxy head" ... athletic body........

As with all.... just because it's a FL cur, don't mean it ain't a cull...

You will also see a lot of variation in the dogs depending on the part of the state or ranch the dogs came from.

Title: Re: florida cracker cur
Post by: hittman on March 05, 2011, 06:20:32 pm
The Fl cur can be any number of colors but most are red or yellow most have a black muzzle, and a black mouth. They also can be bobbed tailed or full most oldtimers will tell you that it is preferable that they be bobbed.   They are equally at home working cows, catching hogs or trailing deer. Some of mine have been put into service as bear dogs, have been told they hold there own with there mt. curs and hounds.
But there are culls in any breed,  the pictures you provided are good looking pups but are not what we in Fl consider a Fl cur, but that means nothing goods dogs are were you find them.

Used to go to Sebring to camp when I was a kid... grew up in Bradenton and always loved to get out that way... them old trees with the concrete repairs still there?

I remember when the state started lettin' people take hogs out of there, must've been in the 80's... I remember seein' some of the biggest hog rootin' I've ever seen in my life in that park...

What's your name?  We probably know some of the same people....

Noah,

I remember reading that all you hunt is bird dog crosses and was wondering if your snappa and shine dogs are bred like this, and either way how do they hunt.  Just curious, cuz I sure do like how that snappa dog is built, I wish I had a couple built and colored just like him on my yard.

Title: Re: florida cracker cur
Post by: Noah on March 06, 2011, 05:26:57 pm
Thankyou BA-IV, yes, Snapps/Shine/Chub are all 1/4 english pointer(proven hog dog EP) 3/4 FL cur crosses...

They hunt hard and fast, lots of hustle... excellent dogs for smaller properties... I can take these dogs and hunt a thousand acres all day... Mainly wind dogs/hot scent dogs... the older they get, the colder a track they'll take, but anything over an hour you can forget about...  Excellent dogs if you woodsman enough to take them to the hogs and want to shut one down quick... perfect for me as I prefer a more "personal" experience to the hunt... kind of like bow hunting to a deer hunter...

These dogs run to shut one down, not to outlast him... loose some hogs this way, but catch plenty more to make up for it...

On the down side... can be too rough/head catchy... hard to relax with these dogs when the garmin says treed...  ;D And 2 outa 3 will yip a bit once they jump, but closed mouth till bayed(I hate this, but the pointer brought that with it...)

Shine is the best of this cross, rough as hell but will bay a good one by herself all day long... not afraid of a bad one...

But the dogs that these dogs are out of are what I would consider "typical" FL curs... gonna try ta catch the bitch first and only if they get slung off bay... not what I want in my dogs but what my dogs are out of...

Noah it seems like all the Fl curs i been through have been this way. If they make it to maturity they seem to settle down some.  My last gyp started out catching anything under 250 by herself made it to 9 (with scars  rolleyes) then settled dow to anything 150 or so and less with help.. give them meatheads tiume they may just settle down for ya..lol

That's what I like.  One dog will bay a rank one  by itself & as soon as another one gets there it's a done deal. Somethings getting stretched out  ;D

Well ive took mine two the bay pen twice. The first time he didnt know wut was goin on we had an old dog that was baying. When the pigs run my pup would chase em but when they stopd he was done. So the next week i took him back and he bayd and tried to catch. One lil pig hit him and he didnt care just made him get in there more.I think he gona be alright.

He's not getting out. Since Rose got killed by a gator he has been trying to find one to replace her.
That's gonna be hard to do.  The dogs he has tried either trail bark, range out to far, or aren't catchy enough for what we do.
