Title: Trash breaking a dog???
Post by: TurdBurd on December 13, 2010, 09:58:24 am
i am from south louisana and i have got a couple dogs that i picked up from texas!  They hunt really good and i am very satisfied with them. They hunt out good and will put the breaks a hog. The only thing is that they trash on Nutria rats if they come across one while hunting!! i kinda of figured they would beings they never seen one before. they are 2 and 3 years old. A nutria will put a fight more than some hogs i've caught so, maybe they like the battle. IDK, but what is the best way to break them off!

Trap a nutria and then shock collar when they get close to it in the yard

I wouldn't waste my time trying to correct it.  Pull them off and send them on their way.  I hunt swamps too and everyone I know has the same problem.  Swamps have more small animals on the ground to get a dogs interest.

You wrote the answer yourself.   "They hunt really good and i am very satisfied with them"  A good hunting cur or terrier will engage almost anything, that moves.  Yes, they do like the battle.  That's why they make good hog dogs.

My best dog will kill every armadillo, possum, and coon she sees on the ground, but then goes right back to hunting hogs.  If she kills an armadillo or three so what.  She might be the best hog dog I have ever owned, and I have had a few.

thanks fella's!!
it's just hard to get to them sometimes when they get back in a pond and start going on a nutria killing spree! The bad thing is that the hogs and nutria live side by side, so i have to get them on the hogs before they get on the rats!! LOL

I don't want my dogs on ANY thing but hogs if they trash they better not do it where I can see but I bet a nutrie dog could be fun and I could make money off them people around here hate them

I don't want my dogs trashing on anything, not even a rat.  I would look for the most nutria filled slough I could find, put a shock collar on that dog, and turn him loose.  You will have several teachable moments shortly.

Yeah, i don't want them trashing on anything but hogs.  i think i'm going to get a nutria and everytime they go by it shock the piss out 'em. How many times of getting stung before they learn their lesson???

Depends on how hard headed they are had a hunting fool of a gyp that would trash on deer and never did get het fully broke on them but then some of my others one time is enough.  If they have been doing it for a while might take a little more

I have a cur jip that I can't break off deer. I've done every thing I can think of. Don't really want to say what all I've done cuz animal rights probably wouldn't be too proud of me. Y'all got any suggestions?

That is a very good question.  It's amazing a guy from Oklahoma thought of it first.   ;)

I would keep a shock collar on them and keep trying to break them off any trash . At least the collar will help you get back to hunting hogs faster. I have a cat /walker cross that most other hog hunters would have left dead in the woods! It took me four years to break him off deer, he is now a full five and has not trashed in a long time (knock on wood) . The wait was well worth the trouble.
