Title: Come on guys! Post by: cward on December 26, 2010, 09:21:36 am I might make some people mad about some of my statements but come on! If I see any type of hunting dogs on the road I try to pick them up and find there homes! Most never have a collar I call around and ask and someone will call and Identify the dog and I will give it back! But before they go they get a good little preaching about how cheap a Collar with a name and phone number is and I am pretty harsh on them about it! If you own a hunting dog BUY you a Collar with a name plate they are between $8 - $12 ! If you are hunting somewhere you don't want people to know that is your dog then stop hunting! If you can not afford one then stop hunting! I personally think it should be a law if you have a hunting dog then the dog should have an Identifacation collar on it! Take the credit for what you dogs do and the land they are on!
I am sure Krystal UglyDog understands where I am comeing from I have seen her post the most as she puts her number on all the cut collars that she has sold in the past! She has been great about helping people get there dogs back but hell why should someone be calling her when they should be calling the owner of the dog! I have picked up several that has had nameplates on them and the guys were very respectful hunters! The ones that do not have them seem to be alittle off on there hunting! So be a good hunter and buy you some collars with nameplates! Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: BULLMASTER on December 26, 2010, 09:24:38 am X2
Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: matt_aggie04 on December 26, 2010, 09:34:08 am I ordered 25 name plates with my name, cell phone number, and reward if returned on them. I keep those, some of the brass fastners and about half a dozen extra collars in my barn. I went and bought a leather punch pliers set a few years ago and with all this I bet I have $75 or less invested but if a dog stays here they have a collar with a name plate on it. In the big scheme of things it is the cheapest thing you will ever do to prolong your dogs time with you. I had a kid call me a few years ago just down the road from where we had turned out saying he had found one of my dogs. Now a tracking collar would have taken me to her but I still paid the kid $20 because I figure he did his part to try and help so I better do mine. I would like to think that kid learned a small lesson that day about doing the right thing.

Post by: NechesBobcat on December 26, 2010, 10:23:49 am X3.... I like the idea of putting Reward if Found on them. Never thought of that. I couldn't put a price on my dogs so I wouldn't have any problem paying a reward to get them back.
Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: chainrated on December 26, 2010, 10:23:56 am I agree. Any dog worth taking to the woods is worth a 10 dollar collar..
Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: BobbyB on December 26, 2010, 10:27:10 am I try to do business with in state folks as much as possible, but there is an online dog supply that sells the coated nylon collars I like with a name tag for $4.95. Shipping is about $5 , but if you order several, it averages out to a few cents a collar.
I have my name and # on all my dogs and on my cut collars. Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: mex on December 26, 2010, 11:18:14 am I go one further. My dogs on chains wear a dayglo with name plate and chain is attached to a big dog collar. If the collar slips the plate is still on.
Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: grittydog on December 26, 2010, 12:28:29 pm You can have dog tags made at Walmart, they have a vending machine that makes them. I have the orange DayGlo collars on my dogs and I write my cell number with a Sharpie just in case the the Brass tag comes off.
Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: UNDERDOG on December 26, 2010, 12:40:34 pm I put two phone numbers on mine and if I go outa town to hunt with someone I put one of their collars on my dog too
Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: NechesBobcat on December 26, 2010, 03:00:14 pm The only thing about those vending machine ones, they are engraved and after time it wears off. If you get the ones that are stamped they don't ever wear down.
Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: uglydog on December 26, 2010, 03:20:51 pm Tell them Chance, everybody including myself needs a good reminder sometimes. New Years go double check the wear and tear on your equipment and replace rivets, snaps and buckles as needed.
New Years usually has alot fireworks that freak dogs out, be aware that this is another time that dogs are known to twist themselves up and and choke on chains, slip collars, climb fences, and get anxiety that will cause even a smart dog to get lost. MOre tips on this on the lswda.org main page. Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: Florida Curdog on December 27, 2010, 07:42:36 am Any dog worth turning out is worth putting a name plate on.
My 2 puppies in the yard have em. Mine have my name, house & cell numbers on them. It's not hard to do. Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: levibarcus on December 27, 2010, 08:43:10 am Before I had a tracking system I had several dogs returned that way. It's the cheapest insurance you can buy and it's just the responsible thing to do. Good topic Chance!
Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: Rockin-P-Ranch on December 27, 2010, 09:13:20 am I know just what you are talking about , If more people took owner ship for what they were doing we would not have some of the proplems running dogs on hogs. But you are never gong to get all the culls out of the woods.
Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: lightrail on December 27, 2010, 09:38:55 am My dog Lula is both microchipped and spayed. But who am I to judge others? I've been to the county animal control pounds of Jefferson, Liberty and San Jac counties looking for Lula at different times after her epic hunts which she initiates. They have microchip readers there and can scan her and find my name and phone number, as do most vets. I know it works because I've paid the $30 to get her back home before. If you see Lula, she'll wag her tail and walk right up to you. She'll try and come into your home and sit on your sofa. This is what a guy told me after I found her after 3 days hanging out next to his trailer. I found ketchup packages in her stool. The Cleveland pound was just up the road.
Someone posted that they were interested in a good yellow BMC. There were two in the San Jac County pound (Shepard, Tx) when I visited there about the middle of December. One was 90-100 lb dog. (If the guy that runs the place is not there, just stand in the back your truck and look over the fence to see them. The place in next to the country compactor yard.) On the other hand, if you find my BMCs on the side of the road, and I don't think you will, please leave them there. They won't come to you, they are microchipped, they are waiting for me, and I'll be back to get him. One other note. There was a guy recently in mid-Jefferson county had gone into his own animal control business. He'd drive around picking up strays that had IDs then call the owner and extort money. Hope he doesn't have a chip reader. I don't want to pay for community services that already exist and were established and are supported by community legislation. Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: DangerZone on December 27, 2010, 01:27:23 pm X2 all of it!!! Called on a dog hit a couple miles from my place last week, Owner lived 30 miles from me would have never found the dog, he was very glad he had a tags collar on his dog, their cheap and easy also returned a brittney bird dog that shoes up at our place last fall that 2$ tag got that guys high dollar bird dog back to him, he gave me 50$ for calling him dog had been missing for 2 weeks, he was sure it was dead or stolen.
Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: BobbyB on December 27, 2010, 05:21:22 pm custom-collars.com i just bought all mine new collars they were 4.50 each i think, came with name plates.. Their reflective collars by the dozen come to $5.58 each with shipping. I try to support local business and people I know, but I also have to support myself. That is a good deal. Every dog I have that is walking around age has a collar with my name and # on it. I had 2 Britts out for excercise take off last year the day before we were going to the Panhandle to hunt pheasants. I had no idea where they went. The next morning a guy that lives about 3 miles straight away called and said he had them at his house. I was lucky, the 1st dog he caught had a new collar with no tag. he caught my male, Pivo and got my # and called me. Zach and I swung by on the way home and loaded them up and headed to Dimmit. Cheap and effective. Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: dub on December 27, 2010, 07:45:49 pm Well Chance I am offended. No wait I am not at all. But you know Chance makes his own. I paid him to make a couple at the Hunter Extravaganza. They were not expensive, I have paid more for just a collar. He was real busy stamping them out. My dogs have my name and cell number in case some nice person saves my dog while I am hunting. Just like I have seen two hit and runs. The first I looked at the driver and got his plate for the other driver. The second I chased down all the way into the hood and got a good look at him when he tried to ram me. I saw him go down a dead end road and I went back to the big accident scene. When the cops would not go look for him I got a wrecker to follow me. Later they asked me to identify him with a nod. I stood up pointed and said "that is him." When asked why I was not scared I said I was not scared of anyone not brave enough to stand up, admit their mistakes, and take what they have coming. Well I look at the name tags the same way. Man-up and take responsibility for your dogs good or bad.
If someone called me and told me I had to pay to get my dog back I would just ask where to go get my dog. I would show up and ask the person be arrested for theft of my thousand dollar dog. If the dog had a cut vest on it then they stole the vest too and that is not cheap. I do not mind paying a reward but nobody will extort money from me. If the law won't do something I would just post the address online as a warning to others. Title: Re: Come on guys! Why wounld'nt you put a collar with a name plate on your dog! There are deer lease around here that say if it is not a collared dog then shoot it! If your dog is in the media of 59 I will leave it and I will asure you I can catch your dog!LOL I have been hunting along time and know when a dog is lost and have had many thanks from coon hunters and hog hunters for picking there dogs up and safely returning them I would hope someone would do it for me! Now that there is tracking systems most of that has stopped!Someone posted that they were interested in a good yellow BMC. To go one step further, this is what I use. I use a collar that has the brass nameplate that has my info on it along with "reward", but I add something to it! I use a slip on tag made by Boomerang Tags. This tag is easily slipped onto the collar and is very large for extra info. I carry a few extra of these tags in my truck console, in the event my buddy does not have a tag on his collar or we are hunting public land where more than one pack of dogs will likely cross up. This way, anyone can easily get our numbers without having to get a microscope out to locate a phone number. I also list my cell, as well as my wife's cell number on my tags. I cannot tell you how many times I have left to go hunting out of town and had a dog get loose or the kids let one get away and I am not in cell phone coverage. Luckily my wife doesn't mind helping recover my dogs when this happens and it pays to have an extra phone number on the dog. We were hunting last year where we were on a very large WMA and no cell phone signal. One of my buddie's dogs ended up hooking up with a crew from another town, they called and got her, exchanged info, and that night I was able to get in touch with them and get the dog back. Now, this slip on tag does nothing to stop anyone wanting to steal a dog, but neither does a collar.

A lot of people are too scared of approaching a strange dog to get close enough to read brass nameplates, especially pits. I did not look at the slip on tag he link he provided. However, it got me to thinking about tying ear tags marked with an allflex on my catch dogs.
Title: Re: Come on guys! Post by: dub on December 30, 2010, 11:47:57 pm I just went out to feed the dogs in the yard. I was enjoying time to pet and give attention without my cur jumping on top of everyone. But then I wondered why she was not there so I called out. She did not come. Barefoot I took off around the house to the poop area but no Mandi. I ran back grabbed my rubber boots, flashlight, and a dog lead. I quickly went along the fence line looking for any hole under the fence, checked and the gate was locked. I knew she had her collar and my phone was with me. Somehow she got out and was waiting by my truck. I was glad I found her. Dogs do dog things and I want mine back. Microchips take time to read the collar made me feel better even though I did not need it.
