The best gun in the world while hog doggin would be the one that stays in the truck or at home!!! Now if I was hunting hogs without dogs I carry a Marlin lever action 35rem. Guns in the woods with dogs = trouble, I will not cut my dogs loose with anyone that is carrying a gun. JMO

I don't want any gun for hogs. I would only carry a gun when hog hunting if I was worried about two legged problems because some of them carry guns. For me when I carry a gun hunting (I am a bow hunter) I carry a 44 mag. It is loud! I tell people if you here me shoot come running. If you here multiple shots use caution and call 911. A level head is much better than a gun. Just my two cents so do not think that I am saying you are wrong. I pick the 44 because it has range, accuracy, knock down power, and it is loud. It is big so I am not hiding it if a Game Warden comes up.

Funny story. I had my 44 with me during bow season because I was in an area that had seen a few very large cougars. The Game Warden saw me walking back to my truck with my bow and that gun on my side. He pulled up and asked how I was doing and if I had seen anything. I told him I had not seen a single pig. He gets a funny look and said, you were pig hunting? I said yes sir. He asks, so if a giant buck was standing in front of you you would not shoot it? I said well maybe as long as there not a pig around because I like pork but not venison. I could tell he was not buying my story. So then he says, there ain't a pig around here for miles. So I just said, well that would explain why I have not seen one. He kind of laughed then we talked and I said the gun was only for cougars because the ranch wanted them gone. I never admitted I was hunting deer! But if you shot a gun the Game Warden would have been on you like white on rice.

Plenty of people bay and shoot over their dogs on a daily basis without having "trouble".   Even with cur dogs. ;)

My personal opinion is a small carbine lever gun in 357 45 lc or 44 mag.   In a side arm, I would say whatever you are most comfortable shooting. 22 mag seems to be real popular as a carry gun.

If I'm in an area where I feel the need for personal safety or I'm hunting by myself which I do alot with my dogs, I sometimes carry a 9mm plenty of rounds and will stop any predator. If I'm shooting hogs I use 30.30 Winchester. But if your doggin 99.99999999999% of the time there is no need for a firearm.

.357!  I carry it only to use if I get treed or If I see mongo whooping my dogs.  Don't have to worry about the two legged threat in my area, I hope.  I would like to find a lever action .357 to carry on the four wheeler.  Oh yea, I am the only one packing when my dogs are on the ground.

If i carry a gun its going to be a pistol. VERY RARLEY, Do i EVER carry a gun hog hunting, i bear hunt too, and i carry a 454 casul,  plenty of penetration.  shot clean thru a 480# bear last year,  both shots, first shot killed it, 2nd shot was insurance ;)

I didnot have a catch dog or anyone to hunt with that did,,,,  most shots were very close .. but when theres more than one person with a gun there can be problems...To me its best if only one hunter had a gun when dogs are being used ..JMO

I use a .35 rem lever when I shoot over the dogs. Have used .22, 12ga slugs, 7x57 or a .30 carbine in the past.

I have had the same opinion about not carrying a gun when i have my dogs on the ground but i have got on somebig hogs and my dogs have been cut down or killed and then im standing there looking at a problem. this is just for those emergency times when there is no other choice. but thanks for all the feedback .

I use a 6.8spc if I hunt by my self and don't have a catch dog.  Normally carry a .45 if we bring catch dogs and that's just for worst case scenario.  Better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.

I USE TO NOT CARRY ANYTHING BUT HERE LATELY I HAVE STARTED CARRYING A GLOCK 40 JUST FOR THOSE CERTAIN SITUATIONS. LIKE THIS PAST SATURDAY. BAYED A PIG SENT IN THE CATCH DOG AND SHE DID HER JOB AND I HAD THE PIGS LEGS AND RIGHT WHEN THEY PULLED THE BULL DOG OFF AND TIED HER UP I LOSE A LEG AND THEN THE OTHER LEG SLIPS OUT. ONLY THING I COULD THING OF WAS JUMP ON THE PIGS BACK AND WRESTLE IT MYSELF UNTIL SOMEONE ELSE COULD GET A LEG. I GRABBED THE PIGS FRONT LEG AND AN EAR AND I WAS JUST HANGING ON.  THAT COUD OF TURNED INTO A SITUATION REAL QUICK WHERE I WOULD OF NEEDED MY SIDE ARM.

I WOULD OF KUST LET THE PIG GO BUT THERE WAS PEOPLE STANDING AROUND AND I DIDNT WANT IT TO RUN SOMEONE OVER

.45 is a good round, if its just for self protection. i dont shoot over my dogs or even near them other than a .22 for squirels. it seems that folks here are either lucky or crazy not to take some kinda self protection especilay if you hunt by yourself and dont use a CD.

I usually carry a 9mm on my side just in case a bad boar is gettin the best of my catch dogs.My catch dogs have no quit and would die before they let a hog get away.I have shot over my dogs to save thier butts three times in the past and I would have gotten em killed if I wouldnt have done something.I know I need a bigger, better catchdog but its hard to find one I can trust like the ones I already have, they've saved my butt and my kidds butts several times.
I have also used a Mini-14 {.223},worked like a charm.one shot=dead hog

That being said I dont feel comfortable lettin someone else carry a gun around my dogs.

Some people say if their dogs are on the ground they are the only one carrying. But what about when your dogs are on the ground and somebody else has their dogs on the ground? What your dogs are the only ones that are important. I think if you plan to bring a gun everyone should agree. I may not want you with a gun with me on the ground! I am not talking about any one person. While I was in the military I grabbed a weapon and punched another man because he swept his weapon my direction. So I feel a lot better when there are no guns. Maybe if I know you and have seen you handle a weapon and I know you have a calm head. But I don't want my own dad to have a gun when any dogs are on the ground.

Kimber 1911 .45 acp just in case.  I have only shot one time in 2.5 years and that was because the guy with the catch dog would not turn him loose to the bay.  I have my own catch dogs now. :)

back before i statred hunting with my buddy josh and his dogs, i used to carry a uberti cattleman 1873 in 45 long colt or my 22mag single shot. all i had was one dog and he wasnt always predictable, so thats what i needed and never ran into any trouble.

nowadays the only guns i carry are the ones that God and football gave me O0

We always carry a 3030. Its not for the hunt, we carry it because when you go to the woods its just best to have that kind of protection if you need it.

You hard core catch dog people are going to change your minds about hunting with guns as you get older, two bad knees a bad shoulder and a plate in my neck won’t let me leg’um any more. After twenty  years my 357 mag, my dogs  and I have killed many hogs in the past ten years.

Mike i have that same problem, except where i hunt they only give me a glock 40..lol  In all seriousness i carry my 40 with me everywhere..  Mostly for protection, sometimes work just jumps in your lap while your trying to have fun/relax.  The number 2ty reality to it is there is always that chance youll run into a poacher that dont want to get caught and you better believe they have a weapon of some sort.

Running Jagdterriers always brings with it the "varmit" side of the world. I may go into a bay to find a dang skunk backed up to a log - which is why I carry a sidearm. I utilize two sidearms, one is a cheapo .22 Mag single action that stays in close proximity to me, either on the Rhino or in the console of the truck. Now, some hunts we go on, we are not allowed to take long guns, and have to kill the pig immediately, no tying or live removal (state lands), and for those hunts, I carry a Taurus Judge. I carry both .410 slugs and birdshot. The birshot does wonders on snakes, and if you don't know me, I scream like a little girl at a snake.

As for long guns pig hunting, if shooting from a stand, I will take my sons .243 since I like it so much. That little hollow point to the head is amazing. I once got to shoot a .357 lever gun on a hunt in Texas and for some reason, I want one of those real bad. It kind of reminded me of the old show "The Rifleman" which I watched as a kid!
