Title: guns or no guns? and why?

Just wanted some takes on why some do carry and don't. And for the ones that don't. Do you atleast carry one for and emergency situation?

I carry a gun and had to use it the other day. We got on a boar around 300 with no ears. This boar had 4 of the 6 dogs cut down and out of the catch. So before losing any dog we shot him. All the dogs vested and Collard. They are doing good now just going to be a long recovery.

I was with catchdog when we got that ear less boar and if we hadn't had a gun our dogs would have got cut up even worse or maybe killed.  That's why we carry a gun just in case.  To those that don't what would you do in that situation or have you been in that situation before.  Not saying a gun is the only way or that my way is right and yours is not.  Just wondering what else you could do.

I sometimes have a gun, it just depends on what I'm doing.  If I'm hunting with you I trust you to shoot around my dogs.

Jet, if I don't have a gun and a hog is whooping the dogs, I'll either grab the hog myself or call the dogs off.

Only thing you can do is slip around behind em & grab his tail if he has one. Works good at night if you have a buddy to shine a light in his eyes.

Shooting works good too I guess. I have never shot over or around my dogs before.

I carry a hand gun at all times just in case, have used it less than a handfull of times. On a big boar that had already cut everything up, when I just took the baydogs, and whenever the baydogs bay up a pack. Have used it before too when I was lazy and didn't feel like going swimming.  :)

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.  I carry a few things I might not need but if I do they come in handy. Sometimes even carry a backpack full of stuff I might not need.  Maybe this is what Tx Hog meant by my purse.

HAHA!!

I have been hunting all my life and have never bayed a hog bad enough that I needed a gun!
If I had a gun with me when I hunt there would be alot of good dogs left in the woods!
I also might shoot someone for not backing my dogs!!
If a dog is getting cut up give him some help!
I hunted with guys that never used a catch dog they just stood in there saddles and jumped on the hog! They never had a gun!
But I do understand that people like to shoot over there dogs and that is great I just like catching the hog!

i dont use a catch dog unless i go out with my mates who use rcd's. In oz most people use either a finder bailer/bay dog or a finding running catch dog, rarely do people use both. after watching good bay dogs work (and i only ever use 2 at a time) i honestly find catch dogs boring, honestly whats to do when you get there? tip it and tie it (yawn).  Go into a sorghum crop with a big stinker getting bailed with nothing but a single shot .22 and if this doesn't get your heart racing then my guess is you are probably allergic to krytonite also.

We hardly ever shoot a hog when we bring a catchdog, but if I'm ever in a situation where I see my dogs getting cut down and I have a chance to end it with a bullet then I feel its the least I could do for them.  Plus its gonna eat the same whether it dies with a knife or by a bullet.

I do not hunt anything with a gun. No guns for hogs. If I do have a gun it is a 44 magazine. If you here a shot come running! You don't need a gun for a hog. I don't always even have a knife. You need strong intestines not a gun. I do not want guns around my dogs at all!

Yea, we carry a rifle for emergencies. We dont use it for hog hunting. Actually we have never had to use it but its there if we do need it.

We catch and tie or stick. We have never shot over a dog and dont plan on it but we hunt at night alot and I like having a gun just in case BIG FOOT steps out!!!!!!!!!!!

I NEVER take a gun in the woods.  I won't allow guns around my family, friends or dogs while hog hunting.  One of my friends insists on bringing one and leaves it in the truck, or the boat.  I have and will go home before having a gun in the woods around a bayed hog.

I have never used a gun while hog hunting.  I carry a break stick, 2- sets of hobbles, duct tape, parachute cord, clean burlap sack, compass, Garmin, Quiktrack, spare batteries, flash light, walking stick, 4-leashes, Case XX trapper, and a fixed blade knife.  That fit's in a large fanny pack and has allways been enough.

It's not always my intention, but I do jump fences to get to my dogs.  Trespassing with a firearm is a felony in Florida.

If you're contracting and the goal is to bring dead hogs out of the woods, then a gun makes sense.  It's rare to catch more than one hog at a bay.  I can see where a gun would save time.  Most every dog I have had would go to the squealing or grunting rather than catch another hog in a group.

I always carry a pistol if I'm hunting my places, but no one else will carry or shoot around my dogs.  If I'm invited and hunting as a guest, I leave it back.  In my years of using catchdogs I've probably used it a half dozen times, but on those few times I was glad I had it.

It sounds like I may be missing something here.  Is it not "cool" to have a gun on a hog hunt?  I suppose for me it's all part of what I call being prepared....same reason I use two catchdogs when 99% of the time one will work.  Maybe next time I'll leave it behind and see if my ego will swell a little.

X2 I burried a good dog because we did not have a gun one night.  Now that is one night out of many but I would still rather have it close by for that one in a 1000 hunts when you really really need it.

Bryant, no need to sugar coat it.  I like to carry one. Nothing like shooting a few running in the open. I have let one person shoot over my dogs. He shoots matches and builds guns for sti . He can shoot and calm his nerves. Other then him no one. I only bring a gun when I hunt my spots. I shoot over my dogs 50 percent of the time when I hunt alone.
I have used a gun two times to save my dogs.

If Im hunting solo and shooting hogs I have a gun. A big one. A 44 magnum or a 45-70 lever gun usually. Its a great way to hunt hogs and I have always enjoyed it!
If Im hunting solo and catching hogs, I may have a side arm with me but its because I have coyotes in mind. I never thought I needed one for protection for me or my dogs though.
When Im hunting with friends we only catch and tie or stick the hogs depending on where we are hunting and there wont be a gun in the field with us usually.

I prefer to catch and tie hogs when I can but there aint a dang thing wrong with having a gun handy on a hog hunt as long as the MIC and everone else is ok with it and clear on why its there. Thank God we still have that choice!

We don't carry guns. And I wouldn't trust anybody shooting beside my dogs except me ...
I also think it makes a lot of the landowners around here feel better about letting you hunt their land knowing there are no guns involved...

If I'm usin my hounds I carry a gun. When I'm usin my cur dogs we just catch & tie or stick em. But I have used a gun around my cur dogs plenty of times. It's just personal preference. To each their own. I just dont understand how someone could "accidentally" shoot a dog on a hunt?? I"ve shot around my buddies dogs for years and they have shot around mine. I believe its all about trustin who u hunt with. I think if I didnt trust somone to shoot around my dogs,I wouldnt be huntin with them in the first place.

it can and has happened.......not saying that it hapens very often...i only know of it hapening once, had friends dog get shot in the hind leg by a rookie....thing abut it is...once you pull that trigger, there aint no take backs. If a hog kills my dogs, then so be it...be damned if a "unintentional" bullet is going to do it.

Mike, Mandi and I were witness to our friend Ben being a quick draw.  Hog came at him, he pulled his pistol out and the hog dropped at his feet!   I never would have believed it, had I not seen it myself.

Hows that old saying go..."even a blind hog finds a root every now and then".....ther is a difference in "impossible" and "improbable"....im glad your friend was able to get the draw on the hog, but whats the odds of it happening twice?....im not knocking anyone that does carry a gun..hell im a federal police officer...i carry a gun for a living....if you are an expierened hunter/marksman and its your dogs on the hog, then fire away....if you doubt yourself or its not your dogs, leave it at the house.

None of the guys I hunt with on a regular basis carry guns but If one of them wanted to carry a pistol I wouldn't have a problem with it. It's the guys that want to come along sometimes and aint been hunting much that I wouldn't want to be shooting around my dogs..

I don't know what the probability is of it occurring again.... But, he'll have his gun handy in case it does. ;)   I personally am not confident enough with a handgun to shoot over my dogs. That's why I keep a 16" barrel levergun on my mule with me.

I been shooting over my dogs for years and love it myself.  If someone comes along and has catch dogs and wants to play with the hog that is fine by me but I will still have my gun with me I dont leave home with out it .  If somebody invites me and dont allow guns then I will hunt my on hunt .  There has been more than a few times if I didnt have my gun with me I would have been in the ER .  I dont mind catching hogs with dogs have done it many times it gets boring to me .  Had ruff dogs for years caught 300 lbs and under with out bulldogs, but the staple guns and the vet bills and all the sewing got old.  Aint noting like a few loose baying , grab'em in the butt stoppem dogs when they run then back off and bay'em and you can sit there and watch a pretty show makes the walk all worth it .  Then line the sights up .  Besides that I done got to dang old to be packin a 250 lb boar hog a mile out of the river bottom just to get to the four wheeler !  Lol !

I dont mind catching hogs with dogs have done it many times it gets boring to me.

I feel sorry for you.  I have never in my life heard anyone say catching hogs with dogs has become boring for them.  I don't care how many times I've been hunting or how many hogs we catch, the adrenaline rush is no different.  To this day, the split second the CD's show up and the bay goes from pretty music to brutal ass gang warfare the hair on my neck stands on end.  If I ever lose that feeling I'm walking away from the sport.

As to the original topic, I don't carry a gun much anymore for two reason.  1. Most of the properties I hunt have a no gun policy. 2. We roll with 2+ CD's on every hunt.  If a hog is man enough to whoop 2 CD's then we have 1 or 2 more to feed him.  And my lazy answer is.....it just don't like having the added weight strapped to me.

I think you and your dogs will learn to love it Craig. When I did it regular, I had my dogs to where I could call them off if it wasnt a hog I wanted to shoot. Talk about kicken back and watching a good bay!

I hope to be catching and tieing hogs for a long time but when Im an old man and no young bucks are around to coach and yell at, I plan to watch a good bay from the back of a mule. I just may shoot one or two if I need some sausage! ;)

We mostly use catchdogs, but sometimes they are cut up and/ or worn out and our bmc(GONZO) rolls off hogs as soon as the catchdogs get there and will find another....he will run a good 500+ yard and bay. so my husband always has his gun either on his horse or in the truck and will go in and shoot the hog. Sometimes we just take one or two bay dogs and rally a pack and shoot 3-4 at a time. either way you still get hogs :) Now i may seem like a bitch but i do not let anyone but my husband shoot around my dogs. he has a pretty good shot, i cant say the same for some of the other guys. so im not taken any chances of my dogs getting shot by someone els. jmo, Mrs. Kbar

Yeah boring is the wrong word  your right.

"Pain in the Butt is what I was looking for"

It never gets boring but leading a bulldog a mile threw the woods briar's , thicket's, and everything else to a bay to me is a pain in the "Butt"  always has been that's why I had such ruff dogs they got the job done themselves and if they didn't then I just figured it was not his day to go down and that it would come sooner are later.  With those kind of ruff dogs you had to get there and get there quick if not you know what happens some of the time not all the time cut up dogs even with full vest on .

Craig

You are absolutely right age has a lot to do with it for some of us older guys.  5 Herniated disc, 3 Protruding disc, a cracked 5Th vertebrae, Major surgery on the right Knee from a old football injury , and a popped tendon n my left little finger than was never fixed plus a few more aliments ahahahahahhahaahah and am still going strong just a lot more wiser than what I use to be .........  Age kinda makes a man like that !

Walk away you say na man only way Am walking away is when I take that final nap !

Heck, I thought you guys didn't carry guns cause most of your hunting grounds are in residential neighborhoods!    ;D

I carry a gun everywhere I go and hog hunting is no different. I have never shot over or around my dogs, nor have I had to use it in an "emergency". But I have it if I need it. Hope i dont ever need it, hunting or otherwise.

To this day, the split second the CD's show up and the bay goes from pretty music to brutal ass gang warfare the hair on my neck stands on end.  If I ever lose that feeling I'm walking away from the sport.

i would have to strongly agree

Hunt with a gun, hunt with catch dogs, I don’t care what your style is just kill hogs .Hog hunters need to control the population. The farmers will thank us!!!

Hell my stands up when I start load up the dogs lol I can still remember the first time 10 yrs ago when I went and the feeling is still the same everytime but if your age interferes with it I don't knock you as long as you passed it down and killed lots of hogs we all know it's still in your blood
