Title: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: Mike on December 11, 2008, 12:48:26 am Now all of y'all from up north, don't laugh at us because we never get to do this. ;D
I met Chris, Mandi, Sean and Jason(jml) after work this eveing east of Houston in Crosby. We were having dinner, looked outside and the snow started coming down. So, we headed to the ranch saying we're either die-hard or just crazy. The snow slacked off when we got there but the wind was howling. We turned the dogs loose and started riding around the pasture. Within 5 minutes they opened up on a group of hogs and caught a big sow out of it. The dogs rolled out and the snow started pouring down. A little while later they bayed again in a thick block of woods. We headed to them, cut Tyson and Apache loose and caught another big spotted sow. The dogs rolled out again and my new dog Bobo caught a small boar shoat. The snow kept on coming and by the time we got back to the mule it was covered in it. We made a loop around the lakes and decided to call it a night. It snowed the whole three hours we were out there and it was piled up several inches on the ground, trees and the trucks. Good friends, good dogs and good hogs... this will be one of my most memorable hunts. Me and Bobo (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/DEERHUNTER280/12-11-08I.jpg) Tyson caught (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/DEERHUNTER280/12-11-08II.jpg) Sean and Apache (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v311/DEERHUNTER280/12-11-08III.jpg) Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: Sean on December 11, 2008, 01:04:33 am i won't soon forget this hunt either. it was a great hunt because we caught hogs, but the snow made it seem wild. like we were hunting another part of the country. very cool time ;D

Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: matt_aggie04 on December 11, 2008, 08:13:18 am Nice one fellas! I was looking at the radar and could see that snow just sitting on that side of town, glad that it started sticking enough to make it pretty to look at. I have been around snow only a few times in my life and it was all up in the southern panhandle of Texas but it is really neat to see and I can only imagine that the dogs could use the moisture on the ground to their advantage. I love to catch hogs but last night fell into the "too cold to hunt" category hahaha.

Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: BMichalak on December 11, 2008, 08:46:15 am i bet that was a fun hunt! Marshall, is BoBo the dog that you had up for sale a while back?
Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: Circle C on December 11, 2008, 08:54:30 am Marshall,
If you have any others like Bobo....let me know. I like the heck out of that dog, only hunted with him twice, but he will sure get one stopped in a hurry, and definitely has some lungs on him. Chris Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: Mike on December 11, 2008, 10:12:35 am Marshall, so far I like what I see. He runs great with my lead dog, always stays busy, has a good nose and a lot of bottom. He's a little on the gritty side, but that may change with age.
Des, he's a catahoula/mt. cur cross... right at a year old. I've been interested in a cross like this for a while now, so I couldn't pass on him. Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: YOUNG HUNTER on December 11, 2008, 10:45:34 am nice hog
Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: Marshall on December 11, 2008, 11:07:04 am Mike yea he is guna become a really nice dog this year! Those pups outta that dog are always a lil gritty at first but calm down with age. They are all very smart too. Keep up the good work man!
Brent, yea that is the same dog i told you about that time. Seee, that coulda been you! ha Chris, I always have several prospects like him. I have some REALLY good yellow pups right now but am prob guna keep them for a while. BoBo's dad is my lead dog and has prob over 200 puppies. MOST of them have made very solid dogs. If you have a nice gyp he is a proven stud. Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: craig on December 11, 2008, 11:10:27 am Thats cool!, i love hunting after a real heavy snow, cause every track you see is really fresh.
i have tracked a group to there beds before in the snow.last winter it was 10 degrees on a couple of mornings when we headed out horseback. seems like its alot warmer after catching a hog. nice hogs too. Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: Circle C on December 11, 2008, 11:35:11 am Here are some more snow pictures...
About this time, I am thinking that I should have purchased a windshield for the mule (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/DSC02221.jpg) Back at the trucks (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/DSC02225.jpg) (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/DSC02235.jpg) Once we finally made it home, this was the snow accumulation, we live 2.1 miles from the bay. I never would have imagined the snow would have stuck. (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/DSC02250.jpg) Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! MG Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: aladatrot on December 11, 2008, 12:38:54 pm Major great time! We were walking to the second bay through some pretty thick woods but we really didn't need flashlights because what moonlight there was reflected off the snow. The woods were white, and the snow just fell off the vines like powder! It wasn't that yucky wet snow that we have gotten in the past, this was dry and powdery. I caught several million snowflakes on my tongue, and enjoyed every one of them. I think we must have looked like a bunch of kids out there playing in the snow, and the dogs played as well. When we were done hunting and back at the trucks, several of them hopped up onto the snow covered trailer and rolled around in the stuff. My dog hopped up into Mike's front seat - I guess I need to quit spoiling her.
I can't count how many calls we got at dinner from folks asking if we were really going to turn out. People kept saying we were nuts. If we hadn't caught any hogs, I guess we would have felt a little sheepish. However, this hunt was action packed and I think we were all glad we decided to be nuts last night! Cheers! M the snowmandi Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: uglydog on December 11, 2008, 01:38:59 pm uhhh, Chris you are Mandi's windsheild! but before I come hunting with you, you need a windsheild and a winch, because i don't like to be stuck! :P
Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: Circle C on December 11, 2008, 01:52:25 pm Krystal,
The winch was installed before I picked up the Mule. Mandi insisted on it ;D With my history, I am surprised she did not ask me to install pontoons too! Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: fletch77 on December 11, 2008, 02:52:00 pm Sounds like it was alot of fun. We are hoping for a good snow to hunt in this year.
Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: Mr. HG on December 11, 2008, 03:30:03 pm Those are some cool pictures my boys had 4-h last night they couldn't pay attenion for the snow out the window so the leaders cut them loose. That dog sounds like he is the real deal it sound like Marshall is after what us want to be breeders are after he has something that is PROVEN and sounds like it is way to go Marshall. Good job good lines most of the time produce good dogs.

Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: jml on December 11, 2008, 06:46:33 pm This will be one hunt I will never forget, The snow was unbeliveable. Mike forgot to mention when we were almost back to the truck he looked out across a mowed feild blanketed with snow and saw a big hog running across about 150 yards away and it was so bright you could see him like it was daylight. Had a good time caint wait to do it again.
Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: Sean on December 12, 2008, 01:22:27 am Im with ugly dog, those look like they would be great Christmas cards. Nice pics. thanks adam, he seems to have all the right instincts for a lead in. i'm looking forward to watching him grow and learn..Sean Apache is looking great!!! ;D Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: tnichol on December 12, 2008, 06:10:25 am Looks like a great time, I've never tried hunting with freezing precip on the ground - always figured it would be tough on the dogs and a waste of time - y'all proved that wrong.
Tim Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: aladatrot on December 12, 2008, 09:28:10 am Tim,
I wondered about the snow too, but the dogs seemed not to care about the snow except to roll around in it. They were so frisky - even the older ones. I think through running and hunting that they generate enough body heat to stay warm. Even the guys were shucking layers of clothing right after the bays. Cheers! M ps still waiting on you to tire of Ice Pick, hehehe m Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: So Oklahoma Cur Dogs on December 12, 2008, 12:29:37 pm Thats neat. Sounds like yall had a blast. After being sick for a week, that little voice in my head was screaming that I shouldn't get out in that weather. I think it was wrong. :-)
Next time! kp Title: Re: Hunt in the snow!!!!!!!! Post by: Mike on December 14, 2008, 06:08:51 pm KP, we might head back to same ranch this week... i'll give you a holler.
