Title: Need help. One of my catch dogs doesn't catch anymore
Post by: fatboy outfitters on February 14, 2011, 05:04:04 pm
My American bulldog is four years old and if he put his teeth on a hog it was caught. He got cut under his jaw about a month ago and now he doesn't even want to walk to a bay. He will just fall out on me and I will have to carry him out of the woods.  When he is in his pen he seems to be fine and eats good.  Never had one do this before. It is like he has lost his want to. He has caught at least 400-500 hogs.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you ever over heated him to the point that he got wobbly on ya? Possibly be nerve damage if he try's to catch but falls out, but that should not keep him from attempting to catch if he is in full recovery from the cut. Also does he appear to go into any type of seizure when he falls out on ya. How does he act when he "quote" falls out? If no true medical reason can fit I have seen alot of Americans that are solid dogs but sometimes they come up a bit short of a pit on determination and heart after a bad cut or blunt trauma. Just a few suggestions. Hope you figure it out. No offense to the American BD guys.

Sorry he doesn't even make it to the bay before he gets wobbley and stops. He was a dog that would drag you through the brush to get to the bay.  Hasn't made it to a bay since he got cut. The day that he got cut I still used him because it was just a small punture and wasn't bleeding.  I caught four more with him after the cut

Put him in a small bay pen and he will either get the want to back or get wooped.

Does he act like he is over heated...excessive panting and general delerium, with complete lack of strength. If so could be two different things. We have overheated some catch dogs before and they will never be right again if they passed the point of heat stroke but did not seize. Other could be one heck of a bad case of worms. Have seen bad cases cause complete loss of strengh in a dog that is only acting a little over normal activity. Also has he been cut badly before and how did he act? Unless he has just lost the heart its gonna be a medical condition caused by something that you will have to eliminate down to the cause.

I had a strike dog thatgot overheated once and he never was the same dog again.  He doesn't act like he got overheated. I worm all my dogs once a month with ivemecand hit them with Bayer tree and shrub once a month for the fleas and ticks.  He is always the first dog that will show signs of fleas.

A wise old dog man once posted " if you have a good dog that has been performing consistently for that long, you better consider his health if he suddenly starts performing poorly". More than likely it's a health issue if he has been performing well for that long.

Heart worms and brucilosis come to mind on this one. I could be off on this but he sounds like he is worth getting checked out by a vet.
Keep us posted on it.

buddy of mine had a red nose I used to take on hunts with me, and that dog would put teeth on some pigskin without giving it any thought. I took him on a hunt one night and noticed he was acting "overheated" on the way to the bay, and after the bay he just fell over on me panting and gasping for breath like he was suffocating so I stripped him of his raiment and let him air out....few mins later hes back on his feet ready to go. I got back to the truck and told my buddy what happened, like a month or so later he took him to the vet, ol rock had heartworms. Not saying ur dog has em but something to check out....hope everything works out in your favor!

i would take him to the vet and get a heartworm test done.....i've seen a lot of dogs come in to the clinic i worked at and you couldnt really tell anything was wrong, but the owners said the just were'nt acting right. sure enough they had heartworms....all it take is for you to be a little late on their ivermection once and if they get bit by a misquito thats it...if you didnt raise the dog from a puppy he could have had them before you got him and just never showed any signs...they dont really show signs till they are 4-5 + years old. Hope this helps ...keep us posted...thanks, Mrs. Kbar
