Mike,

You probably already know this, but did you realize that the AB X Catahoula is actually a recognized breed and there are several registries for the "Catahoula Bulldog"?  I've seen several kennels that have websites which specifically breed those and advertise them as working dogs.

Bryant, i've looked at those sites also.

I thought about crossing him to another 1/2 cross... but the more I think about it, i'd like to cross him to a full AB. I hate raising puppies, but he's one i'd like to keep the blood going. Maybe I could stud him out? ;)

Title: Re: Bulldog
Post by: Bryant on December 22, 2008, 11:08:52 pm
I could probably find something around here to cross him to.  Seeing as how Zeus is in R&R right now, I would probably need a few weeks just to get to know Clifford before introducing him to the others.  Can you have him here tomorrow?   ;D

Seriously, I really like his size.  He's one that might justify dealing with the pups.

Title: Re: Bulldog
Post by: Bryant on December 22, 2008, 11:26:37 pm
This is Zeus and Comet.  Zeus is a good catchdog, but he has this thing going on where he likes to hump legs and wear lipstick.  Is that uncommon?

...and before you ask Bigl, they're both AB/Dogo's and Yes, they could be used as running catch dogs.

Buddy, mostly a RCD but we're getting more dogs so his days of hunting are just about over, he ranges out farther than a lot of curs and its getting scarey,  he'll be a lead-in catch dog (if I still decide to hunt him after the first of the year)

The red female is APBT

The white dog is American Bulldog

I use them as lead in catch dogs. If they can hear the bay they'll go.

Ringo  APBT
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa5/hank1219/hank-and-ringo.jpg)
How I hunt him depends on who I'm hunting with. Sometimes he is a one out dog. He will find em and catch em. If I'm huntin him with curs, he is a lead in dog and will go to a bay.

Flatbroke,

Quote
Great looking dog chris.

Thanks, he was a backyard savage when he was younger, and his owners could not keep him from tearing things up. He was given away, and I ended up with him. Looks like he just needed a job.  What he lacks in refinement, he makes up for in heart.

This is Meathead, not much to look at. He is slow, and even a fatboy can beat him to the bay, right Thomas ;D   Lead in, 5 years old. No chance of being a RCD ;)

Clifford,
After hunting behind Clifford about a dozen times, I made some calls to try to track down some bellymates. No luck there, and I cannot afford cloning, so I guess I will just have to settle for getting to hunt behind him. If someone asked me to describe my ideal catchdog, I would show them his picture.

HD,
I sure am happy with him. This weekend he went off about a 15ft straight drop off into a creek and never missed a beat, went up the other side and caught. He's never caught nothing but the ear for me. Check him out in the pics Bryant posted on this thread of the hog caught in the water (He's the one on the right ear, my red gyp is on the left) http://www.easttexashogdoggers.com/forum/index.php?topic=2625.0

Here are the 2 I'm working with now. The AB on the left is my young project catch dog - just turned 1 year old this week.   The one on the right is "Ice" a pitt who is a RCD - but I use him as lead-in just as often.

I bred and hunted one for quite a while.  Don't have a pic handy - but he was a great young dog.  He started off as a bay dog that would catch when the main catch dog got there - then as he got older he got more and more gritty - then, he started to really love to hunt out more and more.  My buddy used to say that he looked like a "red-tick on steroids"... will look for a pick and post when I find it.

Thanks guys!

The red pit (Catch) is by far the best catchdog that I have ever owned.  He has head full of sense, gentle with kids and pups, Huge Heart, and Vise like grip.  He is a Jeep/Boudreaux dog.

The other two are hybrid Abs and get the job done as good as anyothers, but cant handle the heat as well as the pit.

SHE WEIGHS ABOUT 35-40LBS BUT IS HAS TO BE THE STRONGEST DOG I HAVE EVER BEEN AROUND  THAT SIZE.  THIS WAS THE FIRST NIGHT SHE EVER SEEN A PIG IF YOU LOOK ON THE BLOOD ON HER FACE IT WAS A BAD DAY FOR THE HOG. HE GOT HER A FEW MONTHS AGO AND SHE HAS APPARENTLY HAVE ALOT OF PUPPIES B/C ALL OF OF HER TITS WILL NOT DRAW UP.  ALL IN ALL SHE IS OLD, BUT BUILT LIKE A BRICK CRAP HOUSE AND FULL OF CATCH.  WE ARE HOPING SHE HAS ANOTHER LITTER LEFT IN HER.

Baby.  47# and about 2 (she's a rescue so we're not exactly sure).  Hates hogs, loves everyone and everthing else.  If we're walking I lead her in.  Or she'll ride the ATV or truck and go to the bay.  Heck, last Sunday she even found her own hog.

no supplements at all, He was getting two days of deer ribs, and one day of diamond high energy dog food, and now he's just on the diamond nothing special at all.  He's just a pretty stout built dog.  ;D

Are deer ribs a very high source of protein?

Title: Re: Bulldog
Post by: catchrcall on February 01, 2009, 06:33:16 pm
deer ribs, and a lot of other raw stuff with bones is a good source of lean protien.  My dogs look good enough on it that i'm buying another freezer so i can keep more raw stuff on hand.

Here is two new ones.  The brindle jip is one I raised off of a friends good dog.  Havent started her yet due to her coming in heat a bit early, but her littermates are catching good. She has a whole lot of crazy bred into her she doesnt know about yet. >:D A friend gave me the yellow dog the other day. He is a big ole dog, the picture doesnt show how big he really is.

This is Jada.  I took her in from a family down the road that needed to find her a good home.  She has turned into an AWESOME catch dog.  She had caught some small hogs, but with no real training, especially in the area of general manners - leading, loading, overall manners!  We've taken her on several hunts and after missing a couple times at first, she finally caught a sow weighing close to 300#s on the ear and she hasn't missed or caught anything but the ear since.  She has come leaps and bounds in her lead training and has the best attitude around people and dogs.  She is full Pit, fixed and weighs approx. 75#s.   I have been blessed to come across her and i think she probably feels the same, 'cause she LOVES catchin' hogs!  Pictured also below is a unique situation where all the hunting dogs had crossed the big creek on another hog.  While in route, a whole group of 25 or so hogs start filtering through the woods beside us and i tried her out as a 'one out' catch dog and she snagged this 150# sow on the ear like it wasn't nothin'.  And wanted to go after the rest of them when we broke her off  ;D

My Female:
1 yr, 10 months.  Has very little working time, but will grab a hog.  As of right now, she needs to be shown the bay before being released, gets sidetracked easily.  Has no manners at all, she whines a lot.  Working on the manners and training.

My Male:
He is much leggier than my female, gets to a bay quicker.  Not a lot of working time either, but so far has grabbed and held, except for very initial training.  So far, he can be let loose from a short distance and will go to bay without seeing it.  I havent tried releasing at a long distance yet, but I'm pretty sure he would go straight to bay at a long distance as well, will have to try. Has some manners, but stays "noisy" after the catch and will yip at hog if he sees it, working on the manners.

Like me, both are just starting, and we are learning as we go.  Thanks to everybody here for the helpful material that you all provide on a daily basis.  This site has been a great source for material, and good people who go out of their way to help, thanks to everybody!

Meet Chico he is 2 years old still learning the ropes but coming on well. he weighs a little over 90 lbs but is very ripped out.  At first he had dog aggression problems but after being given a job he doesnt even look at another dog. I can roll with him and other CD in the same side of the box and not worry. He doesnt have your typical Pit bull head his is more of a bull terrier type. more wedge shaped than wide even though its still around 22-23 inches around. He is pretty leggy but he lacks endurance, also been working on that. these pics are bad and they really dont show him very well but you get the point. BTW jsut for a reference that is a ugly dog 4 inch collar on him
