Don't spend a bunch of money.  Heat will kill a dog more often than a hog.  This "hobby/obsession" will cost you enough without vests hanging in the barn.

Well I dont think its wise to run a dog without vest or somethin atleast....you get some money tied up in em...you know

Yes, use them when you can, just don't spend a lot of money.  Some bay/strike dogs don't need vests.

After basic dog handling equipment, my good money was spent on a tracking unit and tracking collars for all the dogs

For me and my bay/strike dogs, knowing where they are is a bigger safety issue than hogs teeth.

I would say that it is the owners decision. I run vests and don't it comes down to knowing your dogs. One can run around or jump over a hog. If the dog can't move fast no vest will stop the hog from crushing the dog against a tree. Other dogs are not as agile. I say go hunt with a vest and watch the dog. I borrowed vests for a couple months. Now only one dog wears a vest and collars on the others. The collars are more for saying game time. But I only do business with Wild Boar USA Uglydog.

Do a search for hardcore hog dogs on this webiste.  You'll find an old post by me.

Long story short, I wouldn't ever do business with him again.  You can't re-nig on a deal and try to hold on to someones money and expect to be well thought of.

I cant find that old post on HArd Core Hog dogs. Do you mind telling me what the deal was? I already ordered some bay vests from him? Dont want to get a dog killed over a bad vest.

I use a 3/4 bay vest from Tejas Outdoors and it works great on the bay dogs year round.  For the bay dogs that get a little braver, Ive seen the P and P bay vest and they look good.  I plan on gettin some.  In my neck of the woods if the temp. and humidity are high, vest or no vest your dogs will over heat on a long race.

I like these Duncans for durability and the right combo of heat tollerance and protection for gritty dogs. Alot of these aussie brands work well for the gritty/catchy hunting dog that has to run in the heat etc.....specifically the breast plat for curs, it doesnt chaff the skin either  8)

IMO a strike vest is useless. Where do you see most dogs get cut? I'd say the rear end, guts, and throat. A bay vest isn't gonna help any of that.

My buddy that has a hardcore vest loves his and it has some good cuts in it but not through.  I like them

Do you not get alot of dogs cut in the sternum/chest? Seems like mine do on the initial impact but then get tere feet under them and handle up

I didn't know bay dogs had an initial impact... I thought that was the catch dog's job. ;)

I have had a awesome strike dog get one poke in the juggular, he didnt make it 30 yard and died. we just thought he rolled off on another hog....well we went to another dog that was bayed killed that hog then went back to the first hog to look for him and found him 30 yards away with one lil poke right under the cut collar....so imo i would run a bib on your strike dogs. i like duncan gear alot it would be my first choice, but i would rec. the NEW boar bibs from wild boar usa too. Dont wast your money on the the boar bibs that dont have kevler. They get shreaded pretty easy. ymo, Mrs, Kbar

The last 3 hunts we have had 2 dogs cut on their shoulders and one on his chest just below the neck. Jay gave me an Uglydog bay vest to try on Blade. I may be getting a couple more.

Bay dog vests will help prevent those little cuts that cause just enough damage to shut a dog down for the night.  Alot of bay dogs will try to catch once the cds catch.  I've heard of alot of good strike dogs get sent to the PEARLS from a cut in the chest.  But I would only run vest on the bay dogs when it is cold.
