Title: Gyp stays with hog after caught. Any suggestions?
Post by: curdawgs on March 21, 2011, 01:44:47 pm
I got a 3/12 year old black mouth gyp. she is turnign out to be a jammed up strike dog but she stays with the caught hog untill I take her back out and even when I get her back out, if the hog squeels then she comes back. Any suggestions? I was just wondering if there is anything I can do to steer her right?

I'm not sure if this works, But a friend of my uncle and my uncle were talking coon and hog dog's. The guy was saying that if you pen or chain your dog next to a live hog that the dog will loose intrest in a caught or stuck hog, and will get out and go back hunting as soon as the bayed hog is shot, tied,or stuck. IDK if this works but someone on here might.

It seems to me if you would pit her on a lead for 400-500 yards and cut her loose up wrong from hog she might go ahead and get back on out. leaving her behind especially if you have another strike dog might work. If keeping them by a caught hog while their at the house works I'll have roll out dogs by next year.

Make her leave, I have a dog that wouldnt leave a dead hog, a few green switches across her butt, problem solved.

I would tie several hogs in a couple acres and send the dog out. Go tie one and then run and grab another and make it squeal. She will run over and bay (that is what you hope). Then tie it and go get another. Hopefully the dog will learn quick there is more than one pig to find.

make it  HOT  on her where the caught hog is , give her the command and make it HOTTER ,  and she will look for a cooler hog  ;) ;) ;)
