Title: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: NechesBobcat on April 05, 2011, 07:32:47 pm I've got a buddy that raises Bullmastiffs and I have found myself in need of a huge catchdog. I haven't been able to get on anything but huge hogs and I want something that could almost run in there and retrieve them. I have never had a catchdog but I don't have time to go threw a ton of them until I find one I want. I want something that is good natured, can run fast, and freakin' hammer a 300# hog. Atleast slow one down until my other dogs can get ahold of them. What's y'alls experience with them?

Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: NechesBobcat on April 05, 2011, 08:12:44 pm I'd be willing to try it. There aren't any thickets up here to speak of. 99.9% of the time I bay them in the wide open.

Keep us posted if you give one a try Neches Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: BIG BEN on April 05, 2011, 09:16:36 pm You never know unless you try it. I trust my lil Ruby(50lbs) on any hog in the woods.Keep us posted if you give one a try Neches Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: BIG CHRIS on April 06, 2011, 08:59:15 am i have a buddy that catches with mastiff and boxers, and they get the job done, but he leads the mastiff in as close as he can get. the dog can only run about 25 yards and then he is sucken for air but he weighs around 180 lbs. so if u keep one in worken shape slim and trim may work for u in the open bays. i have been thinking about crossing my shamus dog with a good dogo gyp
Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: bghogdogtx on April 06, 2011, 01:05:11 pm One of our lines of Catch dogs has Mastiff in them. They also have dogo and AB in them. Big Heads Athletic Body. thats how we like them.
Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: blakebh on April 06, 2011, 01:13:41 pm We hunt alot of heavily wooded spots and a dog of that size would not be able to effeciently get to a bay. I have to also question ther wind! JMO

I started hunting Tip(Bullmastiff Pit cross) last summer leading him to 25 yards and now I cut him anywhere from 150 - 400 plus. He's caught some good boars and lived longer and caught more hogs than any catch dog I've owned. I've never had any problems with fences or brush but he's a cross that only weighs in the 125 range. I really like bghogdogtx cross; that's my kinda dog. Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: aussie black mouth curs on April 06, 2011, 08:51:41 pm Bullmastiff crosses are very popular here. Bull Mastiff great dane crosses have a large following but other crosses are used as well. They find and hold. Any of the Aussie pig hunting sites will have photos of them.
cheers Troy Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: ironheadknls21 on April 06, 2011, 09:26:56 pm I had a full blood bull mastiff back in the early 90's. She was 120lbs and very athelitic with good wind. She was also very game driven. The first time she ever saw a hog i carried on a night hunt with some of my buddies, the dogs bayed in a creek and when i walked up and shined the light down she dove off the bank and caught. Bad thing about it, i was still attached....Thank goodness it only weighed about 100 and she caught ear right off the bat....I used her several more times until my EX wife got to nagging about getting her hurt, but she caught ear every time....May have just been a natural i dont know...
Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: weller44 on April 07, 2011, 12:10:35 pm I have got a 200 pound 2yr bull/English mastiff cross that will hammer a hog...I don't hunt him because he is my pet but I have been thinking about crossing him to a pit to see how it goes

Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: bghogdogtx on April 07, 2011, 02:44:18 pm Thanks Man, Glad she is finally growing for you. Yea my dad has taken his out a few times and turned him loose on small pigs. They are a good litter of pups makes me wish i kept one.
Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: Bino9905 on April 07, 2011, 08:52:53 pm try the south african mastiff or boerboel.......they seem to me more muscular/athletic looking that the bullmastiff....they had one at last years hunt for the hungry
either way, both of them seem like they would get tired too quickly. If you really need that much dog weight on a hog, two pits might do the job and prolly eat less. Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: Beaucephus on April 08, 2011, 09:25:26 am Here is my budddy's mastiffxpit. He does wear out quick but recovers pretty quick also. We have sent him from 100 before. You better make sure its a big hog or you get there quick b/c he is going to try to kill it. He has a great personallity. Good with people kids and other dogs.

Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: OKhoghunter on April 08, 2011, 02:10:16 pm pits are what we use and if u get a good one they will go in grab a 400# hog and hold him. we use breaksticks to pry there jaws apart off the pigs ear. :o
Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: Reuben on April 08, 2011, 06:00:33 pm thats a fine looken dog right there x2 nice dog... Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: make-em-squeel on April 09, 2011, 03:48:25 pm Never owned one but saw my friends two catch any hog any time. I also heard from some Aussie guys that if worked they are as athletic as you will ever need.
You do know once you get one legged up and primed, despite all that food you wont find a big hog but every four months....that my luck any how! Title: Re: Bull Mastiff for a Catchdog? Post by: rockhoggin69 on April 11, 2011, 02:24:50 pm Eye witness here..tip aka "big ugly" is a hard catching ballzy type dog..if i had the time to run a full group i would def. have one bred just like him to ensure a definite catch upon arrival to the bay
