Title: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: Heaven Sent Kennel on April 09, 2011, 02:26:49 am went out to hood hunt some spots I haven't been on in awhile. Hooded 4 dogs. bout half a mile into it dogs strike and go a hundred yards and strike not 5 secs after that I had 3 dogs bayed solid. started in with the catch dog seen what looked like a piggy area so I cut the catch dog. never heard a hit but could hear some grunting. got in there in the cat tails reached down to find legs and found out real quick it was no hog. Got ourselves a freakin' porcupine. I was so freakin' mad. got all the dogs back to the truck and my bay dogs only had a few quills in 'em. catch dog was pretty covered I imagine well over a hundred. Got her good to where they weren't bothering her and kept hunting but ended the night dry. pulled about 20 more quills when we got back to the house. Very interesting and a lot of lessons learned on this hunt. Sorry no pics. phone was back in the truck.

Title: Re: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: Imayellafella on April 09, 2011, 06:44:46 pm I hate porky pines have had this happen a couple times. Best way to remove the quills
is to take a pair of scissors and snip off the tip of the quill it will pull out pretty easy after that. Title: Re: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: leonidas on April 09, 2011, 08:55:24 pm This isn't my dog but a friend of a friends....The dogs went to a bay and could tell by the Garmin something was wrong with one of them. The pup was going the opposite direction of the bay. Well as the dog was coming up. I was wondering why it had a brown paper bag in its mouth..These pictures are with half the quils pulled out...I felt so bad for the dog...

Post by: Heaven Sent Kennel on April 09, 2011, 09:04:25 pm do porcupines have a scent like any other animals? I thought that they may had struck a hog and the porcupine came first. I don't know it's crazy weird. My bay dog that ate 3 last year I was glad he quit trying to catch them but they all got a lead training last night on everything. It was a very frustrating night but lessons learned is about all I got out of it.

Title: Re: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: YELLOWBLACKMASK on April 09, 2011, 10:06:46 pm Wow there is something that's a first for me. We don't have em down here but if we did I think I would be spending some time with a 22 getting rid of them. Looks like that pup nearly caught some in the eye. Bad deal boys y'all keep em all up north for us please.
Title: Re: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: leonidas on April 09, 2011, 10:42:40 pm I like the guys that make it seem they've been hunting hogs all there life. Then you find out there going on two or three years. All there dogs are trash broke and finished. Then start jumping around like a child when number 2 isn't going there way in the feild with a dog. Sorry to call a spade a spade but I tend not to BS anyone.

Post by: Purebreedcolt on April 10, 2011, 08:33:33 am There was a post a while back where a dog came from california where there were no armadillos and she was good basically trash broke and on her first hunt she bayed up several armidillos. If u have ever picked up armidillo number 2 it smells like a hogs number 2. if they smell like a hog to me I admagine they somewhat smell like a hog to a dog. As with most dogs a new smell they are going to investigate and well porkiepines move slow don't fight why shoudent a dog that has never seen one try it. Discipline the dog and move on
Title: Re: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: okie on April 10, 2011, 11:44:56 am my dogs would get slapped around if they came off my hood for some hog poop....they'd get beat if they came off on armadillo poop...i think some dogs are very in tuned to what they are hunting they don't care about other wildlife....i haven't shocked my dogs off of every rodent running around but they know what they're supposed me be hunting....

EXACTLY! A finished dog KNOWS what he is in the woods to do. Anything more than that are just excuses for trashing. Title: Re: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: Purebreedcolt on April 10, 2011, 08:49:09 pm Yes but dogs that are that far along are few and far in between. Now I don't believe in a finished dog but probably 9 out of 10 dogs in the woods for most people are nothing more than well started. Now I don't mean everyone for the guys that have been doing this for years with a line of dogs or what have you yes you may have several dogs that won't trash etc but for most me included my dogs are nothing more than well started seems like I can't keep one around long enough to get them anymore than that for one reason or another. So yes mine trash some and they get disaplined for it. Not tring to make excuses but yes I believe a armadillo does smell like a pig or they sure do to me I have smelt of more than one. Figure it takes a while for some dogs to got them figured out know one of mine now will still trash on a diller every now and again. Not excuses just what I believe and have seen with my own eyes/nose lol
Title: Re: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: Reuben on April 10, 2011, 08:57:43 pm A skunk don't smell like a pig but lots of dogs love to put their mouth on them.
Title: Re: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: YELLOWBLACKMASK on April 10, 2011, 10:43:55 pm Just curious since we don't have em down here thank goodness. But lookin at these pics it seems you would have alot of eyes put out by these things. Is that a correct guess or is that not very common?
Title: Re: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: Purebreedcolt on April 11, 2011, 12:55:41 am A buddy of mine had a dog that was bad about them he said the fifth time he got into one he left a couple quills in his nose area said that he never found one again.

Title: Re: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: Heaven Sent Kennel on April 11, 2011, 03:41:08 pm I have one bay dog thiswas his 4th porcupine and this is the first one he didn't latch on to but did sit back and bay and got lead training again for it. Never had a problem with them getting stuck in the eye yet. Usually get the quills pulled and back to hunting. Been on hogs aftetwards on most of them. Had 2 dogs get stuck in the mouth then was baying a hog. Couldn't figure out why they weren't catching until we got up on it and found out quick why. We got them bad up this way but they are slowly thinning out for some reason >:D. Only one way to break them off I reckon and pull quills and keep hunting until that day
Title: Re: Bet y'all ain't ever done this!!! Post by: AnthonyB on April 13, 2011, 11:15:59 pm I've run into a few out hunting when I was starting some pups. They didn't mess with them, just kinda hung around for a minute and went on. Now, having said that, I had one walk up to the back yard, climb thru the fence and meander through the yard. Again the dogs really didn't know what to think of it until one tried to smell it a little closer and got slapped. After that the fight was on for sure. In the end, the porcupine lost, the dogs lost and I lost. My bmc's had only a handful of quils each cause I called them off right when it happened, but one of the crossed up dogs I had ended up stretched in the back of the truck with his mouth tied open for about 2 hours till I got them all out. Of the dogs I've seen get into them I hadn't seen one lose an eye. Maybe because they go at it with an open mouth not exposing their eyes to a direct shot or maybe just luck.
