need some opinions, might try to use a great dane as a c.d...Huntin buddy has a Bull Terrier (proctor tx boar) If not what could i breed with to catch these runnin hogs...

3/4 pit-1/4 greyhound.  1/2 and 1/2 just looks like a greyhound but 75/25 seems to be the best mix.  Get the best of both worlds, bottom and catch.  It is either that or go old school on em and tailgate about 10 rough cur dogs.  You better get there quick if you wanna tie it though.  Hahah A good set of rough cur dogs will shut down just about anything.

One of the fastest danes i ever owned, used him to chase yoties and couple pigs outta the fields, crazy catch dog too, never used a vest on him but he never could handle back woods. IMO dont get one unless you know you got ALOT of flat, clear land

i have a great dane cross pit bull.  very fast, just as hard as any pit, and doesn't eat anymore then any other dog i own.  We are stopping runners now in places we couldn't before him.  I actually stopped hunting a place due to runners and i am now hitting it every chance i get and catching when he is on the ground.  I run that blue duncan vest on him now and he can run all night long with the curs.  He has had a few cuts by some bigger boars but is getting smarter with every catch.  I have yet to have trouble with him olding pigs in the upper 200 lbs range by himself.  I think he is around 13 to 14 months old now.

He is a very good looking dog, looks strong.

I know I may make some mad but that looks like a black Dogo  ;)

He is a very strong dog.  During a tourny hunt a few weeks ago he made my buddies and I laugh.  he was carrying about 100 lbs sow through a wheat field.  I had to chase him down to get her.  It sounds like bull number #2 i know but it's the God honest truth.  i couldn't even run i was laughing so hard.

My buddy has a half BMC and half greyhound name Casper.HE shuts it down.................................He has the nose and the speed to keep up...

well thanks for the info...i think ill try it i have a three legged catch dog that will get er dun but i retired him hes 9 yrs old. 1/2 rednose pit 1/2 malimute...buddies all laughed at me when i use him..until they see him catch...

Dont mean to steel this thread but Matt I didnt know you had Slick now....he is looking real good!!!

I would like the chance one day to try a great dane/pit  or  great dane/dogo, but im not sure about a pure great dane though, I would have to see one catch in person.

just wantin opinions shes free so i dont have anything to lose...thanks everbody

In that case try her out! Its worth a try and if she turns out make the cross with a pit or Dogo and then call me  ;)

i have the pit danes  brother  that matt posted mine is the same way buit like a brick chit house and smart  

i also have a  grat dane ridgeback  that i picked up that is super gamey but just a littel big for me he is huge  great down size  we are  not gettin along but he will catch a pig

yes cristina i have had him for about 6 months now.  he has been on about 70 pigs now.  Far from finished but on the way.  He is my favorite dog and probably the best i have ever owned. 

Ok sorry for going of topic on post.  i agree with most, if your looking for speed i can see you crossing with other dogs, but me personally wouldn't want a full blood dane.  I like the size of my slick dog. The legs help him a lot which i assume came from the dane.  He is not too big and not too small in my eyes.  He goes through fences like any other cur dog.  A dane may be hard and use there nose well, but for me not crossing fences is a problem.

a freind of mine had a Great Dane cd  he worked great a little slow  in the heavey brush and his tail would beat you to death but never seen  a hog he could not catch he was a 180 lb. dog

only bad thing ive learned is that the great danes we know now have the aggresion bred out of them

the only ones that hunt are the ones that have been trained that way

You can get something much smaller to do the job and not have to feed it 50 dollers a week in food...

well i dont know anything about great danes ,    BUT  after watching hogs gone wild  ;)    ....    i'd say if you

1 have a good spotlight

2 keep him from getting overheated

3 keep him away from barbwire

4 cut his tongue off so he dont trip over it

5 spend ENOUGH TIME TRAINING HIM TO DO WHAT OTHER DOGS ARE BORN KNOWING TO DO

    then you mighjt have yourself one truly amazing boarhound !

my neighbor has a great dane and had never seen a hog before. he stuck him in the pin with a big boar and eared the thing with no problem just not very fast moving in tight places

Whats funny is I thought the same, I am new to the sport but that TV dog doesnt make those people look good.

   Got a question????  how do yall cross them dane pits?  male pit to female dane or does it matter? I was just wondering, if a male dane would be too much for a female pit.
   That black dane pit cross, is a really good lookin dog.
