Title: Crazy cur dog Post by: dub on April 23, 2011, 10:41:46 pm My cur gyp has been acting off for a couple weeks. Because of my fight with Parvo there is not much grass so I have hay spread all over so it does not get muddy. I kept finding my cur dog dumping her food and it mixed with the hay. I feed her separate because she wants to control when each dog eats. I got a kennel to put her in to eat. Tonight I caught her picking up hay with her mouth and putting it on her food and water. There has to be some crazy reason. The only thing I can think of is that the puppies don't listen and she does not want them to eat it. Has anybody seen a dog put hay on their food.

Yes you can make a small pen like 3X3 and put a small hole where your pups can go in and put a feeder in the center and tie it off and pups can eat when they want without her bothering them... some females do that....Title: Re: Crazy cur dog Post by: Purebreedcolt on April 23, 2011, 10:50:25 pm Yeah she is just crazy lol no I don't know sounds like she is tring to save a little food for her self for later
Title: Re: Crazy cur dog Post by: dub on April 23, 2011, 10:52:21 pm I have been chaining her and feeding her separate. She would knock the food over. But now she is in a kennel so no dog can go try to take it. She would bust out of the kennel without eating at first. I wired the kennel so she can't escape for two nights now. I just can't figure out why she would put hay in her food and water bowls. Is it a sign of something or just another crazy dog thing. She is crazy just like me ;D
Title: Re: Crazy cur dog Post by: C L on April 24, 2011, 07:53:54 am Some dogs I have will routinely cover any feed they don't eat when fed. On dogs that do that, I just reduce the amount fed until they start eating all of it and then increase to the amount I think they need. The creep feeder suggestion by Cur Dog is a good way to keep a gyp fom dumping and covering the puppies' feed.
Title: Re: Crazy cur dog Post by: arrowbar on April 24, 2011, 09:07:37 am is there a nutrient in the hay that she is lacking?
Title: Re: Crazy cur dog Post by: BarrNinja on April 24, 2011, 11:11:31 am She is covering it to keep the flies off of what she dont eat. :D
Cut back on her feed or split it and feed morning and evening. She is just trying to hide what she cant eat from the rest of the dogs. Same as a dog burying a bone. Title: Re: Crazy cur dog Post by: uglydog on April 24, 2011, 01:04:16 pm we have some that will use their nose to push dirt and debris on top of feed if they don't want to eat all at once.
Usually will come back in eat in the middle of niht when its cooler. Like Ninja sad they don't like the flies getting on thier food Title: Re: Crazy cur dog Post by: dub on April 24, 2011, 03:53:45 pm I think she is crazy. She covers her food before she eats. She does not eat the hay. She may be worried the pup will come eat it. I may put some plywood up so it is hidden.

wolves, yoties, any carnivor for that matter hides their food for later use.
