anyone ever gotten a puppy with this condition.  The dog has red mangy looking spots all over its body and everything I've tried to do to fix it hasn't worked. After the dog started looking worse and worse I finally broke down and took it to a vet  :(  and they did a scraping and confirmed it had red mange. I heard that you can treat it with Ivomec but I don't know how much to give or how often, or if I am supposed to inject it straight up or dilute it and give it orally. The pup I'm trying to treat is about 25#s. Does anyone know if this treatment works or of any other treatments that are effective? The vet gave me some Mitoban dip but it seems like alot of trouble and I'm not sure if it works either... Any help or advice on this condition would be appreciated!

I had a bulldog that had demodectic mange a couple of yrs back and did alot of research on it.

There is also a product by the name of Taktic. When my bulldog came down w/red mange, this ol boy recommended a product by the name of TAKTIC it has the same ingredient (amitraz)as mitaban ,but you get alot more for your money and it is labeled for cattle and swine. When I called the revival magazine information vet, they said that some people used the product on dogs and then gave me a different mixing ratio(3 cap fulls to 2 gallons of warm water) I dipped my dog 4 times and I haven't had a problem since.I gave the stuff to a guy for his dog and his dog healed up after a couple of dips also ,www.revivalanimal.com if you want to check it out

did some research and i found this stuff called Nu-stock that seems like it might work good. it is sulfa based. also claims to promote rapid re-growth of dog hair. has anyone ever heard of this stuff or used it before.  It sounds awesome and best of all it looked pretty cheap like $10-$15 for 12 oz. tube and theres alot of good reviews on it from what I could find. I am going to pick up some at a feed store in Dallas that sells it. Its apparently used on horses and cattle but works good on dogs too and claims to help all kinds of skin problems. After I try it for a lil bit I'll let y'all know how it works out.

It basically has to kill enough of the mites so that the dogs immune system can regain control and keep them in check.

If I am not mistaken CircleC has a catchdog that has demodectic mange. He might be able to point you in a few directions also.

I know they have it under control for the most part, but he does have his flareups with it.

If the dog has it bad, I would cut your losses. If you keep the dog it helps to spay or neuter.  Stress will trigger it.  It is also hereditery so don't breed the dog.

Mandi is the dog dipper, feeder, vet, pooper scooper, etc. I just get to hunt behind her dogs ;D

I agree with cutting your losses. I will NEVER own another dog with the red mange.

Meathead has the red mange. We got him neutered and it helped quite a bit, but he still has his flare ups. I know that Mandi is now using a new product that our vet friend from Huntsville has recommended, but I don't know the name of it. She tried to purchase some more Taktic, but has had trouble locating it.

That Nu-Stock works really well, but it is a pasty texture and is somewhat difficult to apply (expecially to large areas). When you apply it make sure you have on rubber gloves because you cannot wash that smell out of your skin for a day or two!!!! But it works good...

I have used mitaban on a puppy with red mange and it worked good. Sponge it on and wear gloves. Be sure not to get it in the puppys eyes. Wait about 4 or 5 days and do it again and it should go away.

"red mange" is hereditary!!!  had a bout with this problem couple yrs ago! comes with hair loss,dry patchy skin, lots of scratching,itching, and even scabbing!! usually it is the female that carreies the gene, the best thing is to put the dog down to stop it completely. or have the dog fixed!!  it can be managed with ivermectin, but not cured!! u will have outbreaks, hairloss, ect.    just be careful of your dosage!! dont over do it , might kill the dog!!

It's a parasite and will be passed from mother to pups when they are born so don't breed a female with it. I've had and seen good dogs with it and it can be controled like they say. Not sure if a male can pass it but a female will.

Males can pass the gene on also, it's pretty much the immune system of the dog can't handle the parasite, that's why stress will trigger the reaction. Immune system is already low and then lower some more byt the stress boom hair loss and scabbing. I know some folks swear by Burnt motor oil and sulfur mixed into a cake batter thickness if you got a really bad case of it and need to save a few bucks.

Just wondering if anyone has tried the promeris that was sujested on the mange post? If u have please post the results, negative or good. I was just wanting to know b/c I am going to try it and wanted to know what to expect. any info would be more than what I know now.

I found another cheap red mange cure, that is non toxic to the dog. Just google borax mange and you will get a bunch of recipes. But I think you mix 1 500mL bottle of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide with 1 liter of water, add 4 tablespoons of borax. you have to soak the dog in it and you cant dry the dog off. you want the liquid to seep under the skin and kill all the eggs. just like the mitaban dip you have to do it again evry 5-7 days until it disappears.

Just a update I tried the promeris and it worked for the red mange . Cost 14 bucks at the vet for 1 dose. Really amazed cause my dog had it bad and was scabbing from the scratching, 1 dose of the promeris and it's gone.

20 years ago or better my uncle used a mixture of sulpher and bacon grease. It stinks and you have to grease him up every day but it works . ever here the saying poor man has poor ways. well here you go. you need to keep him seperate from other dogs while you are treating him. the other dogs will lick the treatment off of him. the dog will lick it off him self but it will not hurt him . the sulpher will help keep the other mites and perasites such as fleas off of him. good luck.
