we have had a bunch of blueticks and not one was quiet and even the quietest one would be considered a babbler.....hence why we no longer even try this breed

I'm a "get it done" dog man!!! Don't care what it is as long as it puts lots of hogs on the ground without takin' me into the next county!!!!  ;D

Right now I hunt a modge-podge of Florida cur x bird cross dogs and they do real good for me!

My buddy has a cur X bluetick cross and its a little open but well worth it cause it produces on every hunt. So are you worried about being quiet or catching pigs.

That is a good point, we sometimes see dogs that, as you said, "overrun" scent because they got too much hustle.... better too much than not enuff for me though  ;)

A good friend of mine who introduced me to hog hunting told me that if you had a slow babbling bluetick to run them when you had a runner as the hog would slow down when it got out hearing range of the bluetick that the other dogs would hit the hog like a freight train. Dont get me wrong we kept a few of these blues around until they were 16 months and they had drive and handle but in the end the barking was too much for me but the people we gave them to love them.

Dane,

I think the majority of bluetick hog hunters hunt them because they are open.  That is the purpose of a hound.  The hounds that run silent are generally culled by "real" hound hunters.  Generally, they make a great track dog for the average cur dog man.  Hogs get caught everyday by many different breeds of dogs.  Find what fits your style, and feed it tracks.  Blueticks fit my style.    ;)

I had a bluetick male dog that was as silent as any catahoula tell bayed and he'd shut one down in a heart beat. A buddy of mine has a redtick gyp thats the same way. Iv also got some crossed with a catahoula and a redtick there  silent to

I went a few days ago to a buddy's 20 acre pen and run some pups. A guy came over that had 3 blueticks, 2 grown dogs and one that was a year old.. The 2 grown dogs were scared of a hog and wouldn't run or bay. But the little 1 year old dog was all about it, that little joker bayed his heart out even though it was from about 30 yards back lol..  He couldn't keep up with the cur dogs runnin but that didn't stop him he was runnin behind them bawling every breath and goin just as fast as he could trying to catch up.. I would never own a dog that barks that much but I did get a kick out of watching him run around with them big ears flopping around all over the place.. You just gotta like any dog that has the want to that little fella had..

Never trained in a woods pen.  I always used the woods.  Staged hunts are fine for 6 month old pups, but after about 2 of those, they are as real as they get.  A good prospect does not have their prey behind a fence.   ;)

I figure a pen is the best shot a bluetick has at baying a hog..   ;)

big dog thats pretty big statement you made? so curs dont get it done? i have nothing against a loud mouth hound if you have a 15000 ac. lease with 1 or 2 hogs on it that only cross the road at night every now and then and you really need that cold nose but heck even then you just gonna run the dang thing all day and maybe catch one if your lucky??? get you some good cur dogs and find places that actually have hogs and catch 5 to 10 in a day how bout that??

We all have dogs that we prefer, curs, hounds, crosses, but what we need to remember is it dont matter if they bark alot or not it is the results you get. We are all in it to catch hogs. So all in all, hunt what you like.
