What exactly is a mule footed hog, and what makes them special?

They are just swine with a solid single hoof. Not cloven. Their tracks look like a mini mule track to me. I caught one a few years ago. It had a perfect mule type foot. No seem line at all.
I have seen a few recently that looked like a split hoof fused together. You could see the seem line.

That's a pretty good write up on wikipedia.

There was another fella in Dayton Texas that  free ranged a herd of them until the late 80's when he passed away according to the land owner of the place we were hunting.
He told me the story after we hunted his place one day. I came back telling him he either had wild burrows or unicorns running around. I had never heard of a mule footed hog until then.

I caught some mule footed hog that were piglets in a trap a couple years ago. Bought home and feed out for a year. The BEST pig to eat. The meat is great.

We've caught some near Hardin and a few around Fairfield. They were all fully cloven like ninja talked about. It's a recessive trait, so it's a rarity.. Even more rare we caught a small guilt in Hardin years ago that was mule-footed AND had waddles!!

Now that's something! I'd bet money they were the same line of hogs.

I'm still kicking myself over a pig I shot around 6 years ago. It had three regular legs and one that had 2fully formed legs coming out of his back right hip. I thought it was gross so I left him without photographing him. I also trapped one with waddles and long floppy ears a few years ago.

I've caught the with waddles and ears like that in the Sam Houston National Forest back in the late 80's and early 90's. That's the only place I have seen em like that.

We used to trap on a farm between Dayton and Mont Belvue and we caught several there as well. We always figured that they were inbred or something. We still have access to the area, it just isn't big enough to run dogs on.

There are some mule footed hogs in Crosby too.  I suspect all from the same gene puddle as the ones in Dayton and Mont Belvieu.

Balls of skin hanging under their jaw similar to a goat.
