I currently have two pups right now and have some issues and questions about barking. One of them, my 4 month old, won't bark unless there is a reason, such as a bird by the kennel or a squirrel running through the yard which I am fine with. The other one, my 11 wk old, will bark all the dang time at nothing it seems like.  She wants to bark all the time in her kennel, and will kind of whine and yap while just running through the yard. I know she is just a pup and all, but unfortunately I am living in town right now and I imagine my neighbors appreciate her barking even less than I do. And I have had her 3wks so I would like to think she would start to be figuring it out.

Questions are, how hard do you want to be on a little pup for barking? I certainly dont want to put a bark collar on a pup that small or do anything that would make her never want to bark. I have popped her several times with my soft air pistol, but she is already wise to that. I started yelling hush, cocking the gun, the shooting. Now, all it takes is cocking the gun and she runs in the dog house.  But about a minute or so after I go back inside shes back to yapping which just starts an annoying cycle. Any suggestions here?

Another of my questions is for you more experienced folks with raising pups. This is the one I am really curious about. I was wondering if you all have found that a pup like this that wants to bark all the time will continue to do this when she gets older? Will this yapping carry over to while she is out hunting? I have hunted behing both of her parents several times and they are both silent until they are looking at a hog. She is 1/2cat, 1/4bmc, and 1/4 redtick if that matters

I have searched through the forums for barking related issues and got a lot of info, but really didn't see much pertaining to young pups specifically, so I thought I would post this up. It honestly doesnt really bother me to much because like most men I can tune things out. However my wife is constantly letting me know that my dog is barking, and mostly I would like to remain in the good graces of my neighbors.

x2 your doing more damage with the airsoft then a shock collar in my book

No problems with using the bark collar on a pup that young? I was just using the airsoft because I saw where everyone uses the red riders, but I don't have one, and think my gamo air rifle would be a bit much. I have no problems with using a bark collar, I just wasn't sure about using one on such a young pup.

well looking back at my post let me try again, get a manual bark collar only, dont get one that will automatically shock cause you will want him to bark at pigs right?

Water hose until you get the shock collar, it's cheap and fun.


I never have heard of the automatic shock collars used at home keeping a dog from barking in the woods with that collar off the dog, in fact i know some cat hunters with very open type dogs who use them at home and there dogs are full open in the woods

1) a collar on a 11 week old puppy? No way 2) A bark collar on a dog that you want to bark when she is bayed? No way. It is a pup. You put that bark collar on her and it may work but you may also have to cull her cause she wont bark again (and the later is prolly a better chance than the first). Pups are soaking up and learning everything. So if you put a collar on her you are teaching her that barking is wrong and not to bark and She aint gonna kno the difference in a pen and a hunt. When she gets older then yes a collar. she is just a puppy, let her be a puppy. Dont get me wrong shgock collars are great and i got one but I would never strap it to a 11 wk old puppy. she may be silent or she may be open. I dotn think her barking in the pen is a good judge of that. I think it could go either way with that cur/ redtick mix. Im not sure but maybe a mussle would be a good choice for a lil while.. Owe yes a water hose is great for that, I remember my dad using that for barking dogs when I was a kid.

I agree with schitemhard, if you must use a collar then defenately got wiht the manual and not the bark collar.

auto shock collar would be hell if the other dog barks and shocks the problem child, so get a manual and it will click fast since they are in the learning stages

That sure is s young pup to be trying all them corrections on, its just a pup who don't like being locked up and exited barking running around. I realize you got neighbors but just let her be she should grow out of it. Have you tried walking her a good long time in the eve? Maybe wear her out some. Or just move to the country ha ha. I don't fuss with a pup raising hell till they get atleast 6 m/o or so.

Yea I posted bout this few days ago I tried the water hose on a 7 month old. He just loved it. So I took him on a hunt that started at 4 in the afternoon and didn't end until 3 in the morning wore him out he didn't bark on his chain for 2 days and now I work him extremely hard every evening to ware him out so my ole lady can sleep. Works great

Thanks for the replies everyone. These are my first cur dogs to ever raise up and I know I will have to go about a lot of things differently than the German Shepherds I have been around all my life. With all of them  I started serious OB training as early as I could. Totally different purpose for the dogs takes a totally different approach I do believe. I tend to side with those of you who say no shock collar on a young pup. I have no problems shockin the $hit out of a dog, but only as a correction when it fully knows good and well what it should be doing. And I will try a water hose but not sure it will work because they both already love running through the sprinkler, playing in the pond, and playing in the kiddy pool I filled up for themto cool off in. I realize she is still really young, but I am hoping she outgrows the yapping really quick. If she is open while hunting I wont have room for her anyways. Thats why I am so curious if you all have found that dogs that are really vocal as pups tend to be the same way as they get older and get to hunting. I really think I just got spoiled by the older pup, like I said, she doesnt make a sound unless there is reason to.

As far as wearing her out, I go work with horses most evenings and alternate every other night as to which dog I take with me. She barks in the box pretty much the whole 20 minute ride down there, and will usually be quiet on the ride home after running around all evening,  but put her back in the kennel and its back to making noise.

Well the only thing I can thing of to help YOU is give her to ME!!!! I willl take her little barking a$$!!!!

Oh also have you tried getting her a buddy dog for the kennel maybe she just don't like being alone.
