What more do you need?
You got the skinning and sticking at the house already. Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: OCD on June 21, 2011, 07:42:00 pm I am wondering which would be better to take hunting for the sticking ???
Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: DangerZone on June 21, 2011, 07:44:57 pm Buck - sticking
Gerber- skinning Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: shankem on June 21, 2011, 07:52:42 pm That LMF is a work horse for cleaning; holds an edge well.
Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: T-Bob Parker on June 21, 2011, 08:15:47 pm The 119 is a good sticking knife but for skinning a hog, you can't beat a Case Sodbuster
Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: YELLOWBLACKMASK on June 21, 2011, 08:21:33 pm Told ya Remington with tha blaze orange handle $19.00 bucks at Bass Pro. If ya lose it buy ya nother one. If the knife gets wet and muddy, and you hit a bone or something while trying to stick the hog, your hand can slip and get cut... Ive had it happen on a few occasions.... So i use the buck 119 and keep the Remington in my bag as a back up!! ;) Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: bailey508 on June 22, 2011, 07:50:10 am Told ya Remington with tha blaze orange handle $19.00 bucks at Bass Pro. I use a Kabar for sticking. but you still cant beat an old Case for cleaning. Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: sterling on June 22, 2011, 12:25:55 pm I spent a good amount of time looking for my pig sticker. I like a drop point, with at least a 6.5" blade, finger guard, full tang, and relatively narrow from spine to blade (I've seen bigger knives get jammed up in ribs before). I looked at a whole lotta knives and ended up buying a SOG Agency. It's pricey at $100+ and I was skeptical about the leather washer handle at first, but I take meticulous care of my knives and it has a lot "warmer" feel in the hand than other materials. My one complaint would be the quality of the sheath provided with it was lacking, but other than that it is a hog destroyer! I have never had a single issue when sticking a hog and since I got mine, two of my hunting buddies have bought one as well. Too bad I can't figure out how to post a picture because it's also good looking enough to make your hunting partners jealous.
Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: Reuben on June 22, 2011, 01:33:39 pm For skinning, gutting and cutting meat I like a thin stainless blade and I know gerbers hold a good edge. A thick blade causes drag when slicing chunks of meat so a thin blade is what I like.
For sticking I like a strong blade that does not chip or lose the edge. I like carbon steel because it does not break as easily. The Kabar US marine corps survival knife is unbeatable in my eyes. I have owned mine when it only cost 27 dollars and now it is in the 70 something dollar range. I use about a 27 degree angle on the blades edge and I rarely sharpen the blade. It took me several hours to shape the edge on the blade but holds the edge forever seems like. I also sharpened the top side of the blade the first inch from the tip so it cuts up or down and the blade is only 7 inches long and the length of the knife is only twelve inches and lightweight and not bulky. I have cut 2 inch limbs with this knife in the woods to take out hogs and it holds the edge and has never broken. The blade has a strong thick frame but the blood grooves take some of the weight out. The knife is not big and bulky yet it is is big enough to take down any hog. I like taking care of carbon steel blades if they are worthy of it... Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: Jasonmac on June 22, 2011, 01:46:27 pm you better use the one your kids got ya so you dont hurt any feelings.
Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: UNDERDOG on June 22, 2011, 03:05:47 pm For sticking that buck is good....that Gerber is a nice knife and I like the gerber pocket knives but that biggun seems too thick or wide. I like my old K-bar best tho but if you got both use the buck.
Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: ETHHunters on June 22, 2011, 03:14:52 pm Heck get you some rope and leave them knives in the truck! ;)
Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: YELLOWBLACKMASK on June 22, 2011, 09:52:59 pm LOL I fixed the tang issue on my $19.99 crapper. Pulled out a steel washer and tack welded it to that baby. So now I got it up to speed with the $100 plus knives and I got around $20.23 in it altogether. Whoo Hooo lets get ta stickin. OCD My offer still stands even with the improvements. ;)

Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: slckhunter1978 on June 23, 2011, 02:19:17 pm Gerber for skinning! Probably one of the best knives for the price! I skin alot of deer and a few hogs here and there, but also agree with jasonmac use the ones your kids gave u - will make them happy
Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: Reuben on June 23, 2011, 02:57:31 pm Gerber for skinning! x2 My son skinned 2 deer with his gerber without having to sharpen his knife. I skinned one deer with my case trapper xx and I sharpened about five times. I now own a Gerber... :) Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: slckhunter1978 on June 23, 2011, 08:49:33 pm DAng rueben idk abt that case makes sum real good knives ive got a bunch of em. Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: T-Bob Parker on June 23, 2011, 10:47:32 pm I was hualed to my old bosses ranch a few years back to entertain and guide some clients on whitetails. At the end of the last day I iglooed 4 bucks and a mule deer doe with my sodbuster and a sharp hatchet. I like the chrome vanadium sodbuster Jr for Sundays but ny working blade is the stainless.
I doubt they make the best knives but I use and resharpen mine daily cuz im obsessed with a folding razor Title: Re: Help me find a Knife Post by: rebel hoghunter on July 03, 2011, 12:04:47 pm Looks like you got the to best knives you can probably flind ;)
