Title: Lost a good one.
Post by: Noah on January 25, 2009, 12:29:02 pm
My young dog Bo lost his fight last night with what appears to have been heat stroke.  The previous day he had caught a big hog in a bad spot and I just couldn't make it there in time.  I had several bays going and quite simply didn't realize he was caught until too late.  He battled the hog for thirty minutes or more before I could get close to him.  Just a bad deal.  I had hoped he would bay in a situation like that, but... what is it they say about the best laid plans...

Here's the odd part, when I got him to the truck he was not in bad shape.  He did not show the extreme symptoms I've seen before that accompany heat stroke.  He acted fine, drank well, continuing to ride on the dog box as we looked for more hogs.  Three hours later as I was headed out of the property I noticed him vomiting as we bounced along.  I dismissed it initially as just carsickness with a young dog.  When we got home he continued to vomit and would not eat or drink.  I shot gatorade down him but he finally gave out in the middle of the night. It's just strange, doesn't seem like typical heat stroke but I just don't know what else it could have been.  Whatever it was, it shut him down internally quick.  I thought maybe pseudo but he never showed the other symptoms.

Don't know.  He was really turning on, hunting by himself and just was a good hearted dog.  My family will miss you Bo.

Sorry to hear that Noah.

Sounds he may have taken some bad hits and ruptured something internally... seen quite a few go that way.
