Title: Startin a cd Post by: Hogdog1877 on July 08, 2011, 10:40:25 am I have a pit about six months old and I'm jw how you start to train him with out messing any teeth up or him gettin scared of the pig? I took him this morning and he paid no mind to the pig and he cane around and bit my dog on the side and he didn't want to come close to the pig again... Do yOu think this will affect him in the future..
Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: blakebh on July 08, 2011, 10:48:23 am I would wait a few months and let him mature alittle then try him again! It might also help to let another dog catch first so he knows its ok and thats what he is suppose to do. He is still a puppy and just because he dont catch now doesnt mean he wont at a year. JMO

JMO x2!!!Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: Logan-99 on July 08, 2011, 11:17:29 am i hope you can get rambo off ;) :D just kidding man i shouldnt have let my dogo catch anyway dont tell me you dont know how to start a cd jake when he gets big he will either go in and man handle or not, i agree with the other guys on this post cd's are tricky and hard to come by and all he needs is food, food, food, and somewhere to sleep he would probably feel safer starting out with a 15# pig one hes a tiny bit bigger of. when the pig grabbed him today i was hoping he would try to fight it and maybe it would trigger something in his head to fight back?

Poor advice Obviously not trained many young dogs, this (dime a dozen) phrase that keeps coming up not just on this post but others too to me just shows a serious lack of respect for the dogs especially a pup that young. In my 20 yrs of hog hunting I found that the pride comes from raisin and makin something out of a dog yourself not just buying one that is already doin it. The catch dog is the one u have to lead and the one that takes care of business in the end, I want one I trust when I go to a hog and a bulldog mite b a dime a dozen but a good catch dog is not. He is young let him grow up a little, he coulda just bit the dog cause of all the new excitement and rucus and was probably just nervous it's not uncommon in pups that young he will come around I'm sure ;)Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: halfbreed on July 08, 2011, 11:39:05 am not knockin bulldogs would;nt take no amount of money for the two i own . but iffin you got a young dog more interested in biting another dog instead of a hog i;d be very careful and leary of said dog . i;ve been working dogs since around 1962 . till 1973 then joined marine corp andgot out 1976 thats the only three years i know of that werent dogs around me . just sayin if young catch dog dont wok out or shows dog agression dont mess around much try another their not that expensive to try out . sorry if i offended any body MR. WHITTEN . whittens catahoula kennel i;ve been around for a WHILE just not on the COMPUTOR ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: Logan-99 on July 08, 2011, 11:42:31 am i know he is a puppy when he messes with the other dogs but its not a good habit to fall into i hope he puts all his aggression toward the pig ive heard a story about a few people running to the bay and the catch dog was caught on the strike dog. the catch dog didnt make it home
Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: tmatt on July 08, 2011, 12:02:18 pm I do believe that his post said that the pig bit the pup on the side and the pup didn't want anything to do with it after that. I am not sure why everyone keeps thinking the pup showed dog aggression. Let the pup grow up and mature. If you let him get hurt now you will for rambling sure ruin him. Too many people expect pups to act and be like grown dogs and that is just asking too much of them. Once again, LET HIM GROW UP!!!!!! A whole lot of bulldog have been ruined by people that wanted them started too soon!
Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: bddhoggdogin on July 08, 2011, 12:11:33 pm I started my young pitt cd at 4 months this is what u do put some bay dogs in on the 20 # pig let ur pup bark at it till he starts building confidence 20 min 2 a week then let the bay dog catch it and let ur bulldog catch it when he catches it let him kill it then get him out of the pen forever feed till 12 months teeth will be ready run him in the woods works everytime
Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: Hogdog1877 on July 08, 2011, 12:13:58 pm You're right I disnt say the dog bit any other dog the pig bit him?? I don't know how it's come up that he bit another dog
Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: halfbreed on July 08, 2011, 12:15:05 pm i do agree with that about age like i said i started my cd; in the woods when they was old enough to hunt after their teeth was set proper. lot of guys wanted to use my hog pen and hogs to work their catch dogs i wouldn;nt allow it cause i did not see the need . now i would let them watch and get fired up from the outside. while we were baying young pups in the pen . thats about all it took they spent more time learning manners than catching and after watching the pups bay . and seen whats up took em to the woods like i said at about 1 year old after teeth set good . bayed pig turn loose and wha la new catch dog. works ever time !!
Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: noelle on July 08, 2011, 12:15:25 pm Musta misread I thought said the pup bit the other dog I apologize. Still needs to grow up a few more months IMO before makin a hole lotta progress with him.
I apologize for sounding hasty halfbree... was just a touchy subject for me from a prior deal no offense meant or none taken ;D jmo but I think he's a bit young to expect a whole lot but lettin him have dog aggression is a bad deal but apparently I misread Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: noelle on July 08, 2011, 12:18:49 pm I started my young pitt cd at 4 months this is what u do put some bay dogs in on the 20 # pig let ur pup bark at it till he starts building confidence 20 min 2 a week then let the bay dog catch it and let ur bulldog catch it when he catches it let him kill it then get him out of the pen forever feed till 12 months teeth will be ready run him in the woods works everytime How do u train the baydogs to catch on command on a 20# pig? Lol Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: halfbreed on July 08, 2011, 12:31:31 pm no problem noell i dont ever get offended when talkin dogs i thought he said his dog bit his other dog too . long as no dog agression just take yo time let young dogs watch other dogs bay.ever time ya bay he;ll start wanting to be in thar withem. just dont let em start gettin shook around by big hogs while he is young and his teeth aint ready. i always keep them big ol cow leg bones in the bd pen for them to grind on keeps their teeth set firm and tight

Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: redcur on July 30, 2011, 04:47:31 pm Aw he is still young. Let him figure it out. Get you one about the same size and get him to squeeling a little and see what he thinks about that. When the pig bit him he wasn't sure what to think or do as he is just learning. I wouldn"t cull him yet, he might make you a good un.
Title: Re: Startin a cd Post by: Reuben on July 30, 2011, 07:59:33 pm I am a little on the hardcore side. :-[ I like to see natural ability with pups...I like to see a strike dog pup winding and trailing tidbits at 2-3 months old and rolling out by 4 months old. It don't matter if they know what they are doing but it just tells me it is in them to be a good dog.
Same thing with a catch dog...I want to see them lock on a shoat at 3 or 4 months old. This is natural ability and I am perfectly happy putting the pup up after that until 10-12 months of age because I know they will do it when the time comes. I like my dogs this way because I have a small yard so need the dogs to be good enough for breeding as well as for hunting because can't keep to many. Don't always get my pups that way but that is the goal...and that is what makes me happy. :) With your pup...someone mentioned that you should tie your pup outside the bay pen and let some bay dogs bay the hog, this is good advice, especially if you tie him in the area where the pup can be fairly close and see the action. Also it would help to tie a yound bay dog close to the pit pup but not so close to where they are baying each other or where they can fight one another. This will encourage him to focus on the pig by watching the other pup bay. Once he fires up and wants in you can let him in... :) You can not force the pup to catch. you can only encourage him to do so by setting him up for success. |
