Title: Too Hot To Hunt
Post by: Bryant on July 18, 2011, 10:56:49 pm
Maybe I'm getting older, or maybe I'm just not quite as mad at the hogs as I used to be, but dang if it's just been too hot to get me motivated to do much of anything.

I picked up a new place to hunt about a year ago that's about a mile from my house.  This place is on the Little River and I recently found out about the awesome gravel bar back in the woods.  With that, I had to have a little riverboat.  I found a little 14'er I gave about nothing for and the boys, neighbors and I have been having a blast the past few weeks running up and down the river wearing out the catfish.  I've done a lot of lake fishing, but this river fishing is a bit new to me.  We haven't been skunked on our lines yet, so perhaps it's beginners luck!  Anyone have any tips, I'm all ears!

Also made a run to the house in Port A last weekend for a final Snapper trip before the season ended.  Kind of a pre-party for my youngest nephew who's getting married in a few weeks.  Our intent was some structure about 35 miles out, but we hit a big weed line near the 26 mile rigs.  Threw out the outriggers and trolled the line...didn't take long and we had a nice mahi hooked up.  We got him to the boat, left him in the water and got some major chum going.  Sat there for about an hour and half and caught 58 smaller mahi's.  Got tired of that, and ran the rest of the way out and managed 12 Red Snapper, 2 Vermillions and a Grouper before we started running out of ice and headed back in.  I didn't think I was EVER going to finish cleaning fish.  There were seven of us on the boat, and everyone had a nice mess to put in the freezer.

Bryant thats cool pictures and fortunate to have a place so close to home to enjoy with your family.

I have not felt like going hunting much at all this summer either, but I know I gotta go some to make sure Thomas is doing it right ;)

I talked the old man in taking us to the river the other evening, just sit on the bank and watch my Neice and Thomas cast a few lines. Was just a great time being close to the water.

I think with the long heat wave we are having its Mother Nature telling us to be smart and draws us near the water.

Very nice man! I love the river and have found myself looking at some 14-16 flat bottom boats just to ride the river and fish a little. Have you put in the big Brazos yet?  I can get to it about 2 miles from my parents place, it calls my name everytime I drive over it.

Matt,

The place we've been playing at is just too convienient to home to go much anywhere else...and your right, just riding up and down the river is pretty relaxing.  Didn't know just how much I would enjoy it.  I can be from my house to boat in the water in less than 10 minutes.  We haven't been but about 2 miles in either direction on the river, but the stretch we're on is very navigable.  We learned pretty quick (and one prop hub later) where you have to swing out for the shallow gravel bottoms, etc.

Yellow grasshoppers and a splitshot just enough to sink it slowly.

Those of us that are lucky enough to have a small river nearby are truly blessed.....beats a big lake anytime.
