Title: want to get started not sure how? Post by: cody l on July 20, 2011, 04:21:33 pm I live in the conroe area and I have been wanting to start hunting hogs with dogs for awhile just not sure how to even start. If anyone has some sugestions or can take me out to show me the ropes I would really appreciate it.

Get with people that catch hogs and just watch what they do. You will figure out which style you like. I wouldn't worry bout getting dogs though till you have learned the style of hunt you want to do and feel comfortable doing it yourself. Then buy dogs, trade dogs, borrow dogs whatever you gotta do to have the dogs that suit you.

Post by: wilton on July 21, 2011, 08:15:49 am I agree with Mr. Mason, and can personally recommend him as a long time respected authority on all things about hog hunting with dogs, breeding/raising/training dogs, in a baypen, in the woods, etc. Also agree with previous reply, go to hog dog breeders, hog hunters, and listen, watch, and learn what they have to say and show you. Then with that experience, try to find what and how you want to proceed.

Lots of us were not trained to hog hunt we just learned from beating the woods down. I would highly suggest attempting to get someone to show you the ropes so you don't get hurt but its truly up to you on how passionate you are about doin it. Hollar back at us when you have 25 dogs and have had a couple run ins with the game wardens you will be ready to start your training. Lol. Good luck

Post by: cody l on July 22, 2011, 09:54:29 am Thanks for the input that's what I was planning on doing want to try to watch and learn first just don't see the point in getting dogs if I don't know how to work with them. I have talked to a few guys on here I'm suposed to go watch a guy work with his and go hunting with another guy. Sorry about the profile did it at work on my phone.
