Title: gyp lacking heat cycle any ideas?
Post by: wilton on July 20, 2011, 09:35:59 pm
First for me i've got a 2 1/2 yr. old gyp that has not had a heat cycle?  I've had her with a stud for a yr. since just before she turned 18mos. and this last time put her mother in with her to try and stimulate her to coming in. I know her mother and grandmother were both late bloomers didn't come in and breed till they were 2yrs. but now at 2 1/2yrs. i've never seen this, anyone have any ideas, info. experience like this?

Had a brindle saddle back in my yard that got hit by a car and killed at 4 years old, had never cycled, just barron.

Thanks, i've been thinking that but some folks on here have come up with some worthwhile remedies to try, so there's still hope a little longer. I'm always game to try some of the old tried and tested ole' school methods.

Wheat germ oil in her diet will help bring her in and help regulate her heat cycle, or lack thereof.

They use guide on cows, or use to. Not sure on spelling, Ludalacin, it brings em in. I got a buddy that uses it on his dogs. You can get it, got to know the right vet.

Thanks for all the ideas, info.; that's the second mention of wheat germ oil, i've got some on order for next week, don't how much or often to give, my guess is a tbls, maybe once a day or week? for how long? On the light cycles, i've had severl gyps like that, i just estimate their time and keep them with stud a few weeks before til they come in. The vet ideas will be the last resort due to many negative experiences.

Ive always heard to just put them around other gyps in heat like you did. Good luck and have hope, my buddy had a real good gyp that was almost 3years old when she had her first heat. They didnt know if it was a fluke, but they bred her and she took ended up having 10 healthy pups and 9 made it they jus turned 8 weeks old.

I was once told that feeding a dog alphalfa pellets would bring them in heat more often and quicker.  I did not think that horse feed could do that until...my gyp, would go to every horse trough and eat from them and them when she was in her kennels, she would bark like crazy and i would put her  a scoop of sweet feed and alphalfa pellets mix in her kennel for her.  She came in heat at 8 months...and me not paying attention, she got bred.  While weening her 1st litter, still giving her the horse feed mix, she got bred again!! Needles to say, I stopped the horse feed after being told this and she has not came into heat in 6 months!! Thank God!! She gave us a run of 16 pups in 2 litters, in 6 months timing!!  All of which have turned out to be some pretty good hunting pups! Its funny cause both litters were unexpected and we have people calling back to see if she has had any more!! Good luck with your dog...its a cheap way to find out if it works for her...about $9 a bag for just plain ol alphafa pellets.

About a TBS a day mixed with her food. Give it to her til she comes in. It usually takes about two.weeks.

Thanks TMatt for the dosage, should be getting it in this week, can't wait to try it. Also thanks M. Bennet i had one other recommend the same, but the vet. is the last resort, due to so many bad experiences with them. But i've 3 good ideas with the wheat germ oil, organic kelp, and alfalfa pellets, if any or all of these don't work i'll let her be, become someone's pet, etc.

Yes, we are from Diboll. I have known Bessie and James my whole life. I went to school with Karen and Angela. I assume your daughter in law is Karen.  She was 2 yrs older than me and was always the sweetest person.  Hope that you have good luck with your dog and get pups soon!

Im gonna have to try these also, usually seems like if i dont want to raise pups, somethings always im heat, ive got a couple AB's gyps I have been waiting forever. My luck they will all come in at the same time.
I have always been afraid to mess with mother nature, but how many on here have actually used the L shot? And what were the side effects. This would definitely be a last resort, but im about to that point.
