Title: Ears
Post by: slimhogdog on July 21, 2011, 10:15:57 am
Ok i need help from you more experienced guys...my bmc ear has been bothering him(shaking his head around and stuff like that). I gave it a look but dont see anything out of the ordinary besides it could use a good cleaning. What do yall suggest to clean the ear? Could it be something more serious that im not seeing?

Thanks

They make ear wash solution that is cheap and goes a long way. Lay the dog down on his side squirt it in his ear, fold the ear over and rub the base of the ear so that it breaks up any dirt for about 30-45 seconds and then do the other side. The other possibility is a tick and you have to look closely for them, they can hide real well.

Where can i find this solution?

Ear mites or a tick down in there! Go to TSC and get you some ear mite treatment. You will have to look real good for ticks too. Is the ear swollen?

I agree with the above, and also i've tried in the past regular old mineral oil, worked just fine.

if it is a white dog could be an inner ear infection and antibiotics more than likely will be needed.

More than likely it is ear mites and need to buy the med like mentioned above. Also can use  a couple cc's Ivomec in each ear every 3 days for a week or so.
You can also give about 1.5 cc's by mouth on a 50 pound dog once a week for 3 weeks and the blood suckers will die from ingesting the blood and ivomec.

No its not swollen that i can see. One thing i forgot to add was about 3 yrs ago, he got that ear cut in half by a boar, could it be that it hurts him and he'll just always have to deal with it?

I don't think that's the issue. I have had ears slit, cut, and chewed completly off before and hasn't given them any problem. I say your two best answers are gonna be listed above since they are both very common. Good luck. But if it does turn out to be the cut ear deal, just cut his other ear off it will kinda balance him out. Lol (just pickin don't really do that)

Having worked in a grooming kennel for almost 2 years, I can tell you the best way to clean ears is with Listerine (yes what you rinse your mouth with) and cotton balls.

Your finger...

If they are hurting him pretty bad, I would HIGHLY suggest you put a muzzle on him. No joke.

Pour Listerine in the ear and then squeeze and roll it back and forth and massage it, but make sure you keep the canal faced up, otherwise the listerine will pour out everywhere. keep massaging for a few mins, and then using a cotton ball and you finger, dig for china. Sometimes for REALLY caked up stuff we use q-tips, but you have to be careful not to get to deep.

What about a few drops of Ivomec in the ear to kill the mites.  I've always heard this but there had an excuse to try it so wondering if anyone uses it.

I cleaned the ear out with Listerine and then added some ear mite drops i got from the feed store and it seemed to stop bothering him last night. I'll check him again today and post how it worked.

Nue- stock with q-tips. nue stock can be found at most feed stores our local tractor supply quit selling it. Also Jeffers, if it continues ceffillaxin (fish flex) 100 tablets for $30 plus shipping. 500 mg first day dont feed him 250 each day after for dog 50#.
nue stock is good for many things. sore pads, skin(hot spots) main ingrediant sulphur.
