im thinking about maybe getting a hound i just want some info on them

whats yalls favorite hound and why

I have hunted and owned every tree hound breed there is, and I prefer the plotts hound over them all.
I like the way they are built, and prey drive, and over all natural ability. But that dont mean they are all that way.
There are good and bad in all of them. Personally I dont like walkers, but have heard there are some good ones out there, j/k... I have seen some good ones too.
I dont like any hound that looks or built like a bloodhound, too long of ears, loose skin. I like a real tight made hound, with a medium to short  ear.
There really is no one best breed, they all can get it done, you just have to find the ones that suit you the best. But I'll stick with the plotts.

Plotts! The ones Ive had experience with havent been as mouthy as the other hound breeds.

seen few good plotts and one good walker    and several blue tick catahoula cross    wish i could find me a stocky short ears blue tick

a cold nosed plott can get it all done except maybe catching

I like a nice houndy built bluetick that is all about producing pork.

She been hunting over 600yrds at 6months old

We need to hunt together one day I want to see how good your walker cross gyp is.  I live in ross not far from you at all.

I coon hunted for years back when I was younger, then I took up hog and bear hunting,....I guess that I've hunted with just about all kinds of hounds. I've seen some really good coon dogs from most of the hound breeds, but when it comes to hunting big game, I do believe that the Plott breed produces more really good dogs than any other hound breed. However,one of my buddies had a bluetick gyp that would have made one of the very best hog dogs I've ever hunted behind if she hadn't gotten killed by a bad hog. Of course, there are folks on here with super hog dogs from other hounds, and there always will be, but for whatever reason it seems to me that Plotts, in general, take to hog hunting sooner and turn out more exceptional dogs than other breed of hounds.

I like blueticks, but for hogs I think a plott is the best and have owned several that were silent

Hey Centex The type of dogs I run are the type that find hogs and catch them..........Not just go out six hundred yards.  Question of the day for you.   Do you hunt with a garmin?

It sure does but I'm sure no one will follow thru with it.   :P  I'll provide the place with lots of hogs if anyone would want to drive for the weekend? 

No, go to a place hardly any hogs on it... that's what will show what your dog is made of. ;)

Ive got them too.  ;)  Ive seen those long range cold nose dogs pass up on some of my places a group of 30 or more and leave my place and go another couple miles before they bay up, when some of my shorter range dogs are bay and caught right here by the truck...  Are you in Mike?  You make plenty of money to take some time off and come up?   ;D

All i was saying is i have both...  Ive got dogs that will hunt in this heat all day and make you want to leave them out here or i have short range gritty dogs, that have stuck plenty of times over my long range dogs.  I wouldn't mind throwing a shorter range dog into this just to see what happens. 

i have been with some guys and there long range dogs pass up more pork them they produce  trying to get gone . then cut my short range dogs loose and they find hogs right away  love my short rang gritty dogs

Naw, all I have is some young dogs... they'd probably just embarass me. ;)

That's what I'm saying, not always but it does happen. 

contest or not, you seem to have a fun crew, at some point this fall we'll have to make a few runs. Are you guys close to Teague? I've got a place to stay up there.

It works both ways, I've seen dogs come back while others roll out a couple hundred yards farther and find pigs.

i just whisper in my hounds ear and tell them what range i want to hunt short medium or long just depends on the mood im in ;D

Theres only one way to find out if all this internet talk is real just talk and that is to hunt together.

I'm about 1hr and half from there but i have places to stay as well.  Your more than welcome anytime.  Winter is a ball around here for sure. 

I heard you had a good handle on your dogs but that's pretty impressive.

Just a hop skip and a jump bout 2 hours bring your dogs

I actually will be.  We planned on making some runs around there but they aren't know for very bigs ones.  ive hunted down there several times.  They had good teeth but 150 to 200 pounds have been the biggest.  We might as well make another 2 hours and hunt with you.  I'm always down.  Ill stay in touch closer to the time when my box should be finished.
