Title: Re: all hound pack? Post by: firemedic on July 27, 2011, 10:35:20 am Well my buddies from TN all have hounds except for one guy that has Catahoulas.....and me, I have 2 curs. We hunt a good deal in south GA after deer season and kill a lot of hogs. Of course their hounds are open on track which makes for some long races sometimes, but not always...our dogs are pretty rough and will catch one if it lets 'em get up on it. We use several standers and they kill a lot of the hogs we run. I guess if we all had dogs that didn't open on track we might kill more, but I do love listening to the race.....and it hasn't affected my dogs at all, they're still silent on track as they've always been.

Title: Re: all hound pack? Post by: Cutter Bay Kennels on July 27, 2011, 12:22:35 pm bet thats a loud race and long to I'm not sure where you guys get the long race stuff from. ??? As with any other breed of dog, there are times when the hog bays instantly, while others they turn and burn. If you've hog hunted, you got on a runner. That is a fact. ;) Title: Re: all hound pack? Post by: skunkhounds on July 27, 2011, 12:31:38 pm ya but i catch alot more hog now that i use silent dog then when i was useing open dogs. and the races are alot shorter with silent dog i have hunted both and thats what i have seen

Please don't speak for mine. ;) I am happy to let them speak for themselves. ;D Sometimes they say "STOP, we've got you now", and other times they say "RUN, but die tired". Title: Re: all hound pack? Post by: countryboyjake2 on July 27, 2011, 01:20:55 pm i agree it just depends on the hog. we ran one for bout 4 hours the other nite an all the silent dogs quit an we had to put the plott hound on it to put a stop on him!
Title: Re: all hound pack? Post by: arrowbar on July 27, 2011, 02:47:51 pm I run all plotts now, I have a really young AB that I got so she has not had any field experience yet. I run cats as often as I can and the occasional hog population as I hunt in an area that is just now starting to see hogs but the drought is helping to keep them at bay. Until my ab learns to catch I will continue to do the bay and shoot method that has worked for me in the past.

Post by: FLBayNSlay on July 27, 2011, 05:41:06 pm Cutter Bay how open are your hounds? and would you say they have some grit to them??? I use to not be much on hounds but have come to respect a good one. If you got the land to run them there hard to beat. Also do you turn 1 dog out on the track and let him finish alone pr pack a bunch of hounds to them? Just curious. If your ever close to Tallahassee let me know I would like to see some good ones run! Maybe I could sneak a cur in there ;D

Maybe I could sneak a cur in there ;D My hounds do not babble, but when they strike in, they are as open as it gets. Yes, I feel they have smart grit to them. I can run them single, or by the pack. Often times I hunt multiple dogs at once as it let's me work more at a time, which is scarce enough as it is. Generally 1-2 of my hounds will bay quicker than those plus 1 or 2 more. The hogs are not too threatened with only 1-2. More makes them want to keep going. Often a single dog will relay onto the next after I show up at the bay. While we finish up, the single will be lining the next victim out. If the weather is right, I'll let them go. It is not, I'll call them off. Title: Re: all hound pack? Post by: Mike on July 27, 2011, 06:12:26 pm What about some runnin' hounds... Triggs, Julys, running Walkers. Don't hear of too many hog hunters that using them.
Title: Re: all hound pack? Post by: Bigdog on July 27, 2011, 06:28:35 pm ill agree races r longer with hounds because when they get after something there bred to run him till they tree the game or bay it.curs r bred to run it out of sight and come back and let u pet them and luv on them and brag how good they r.then u can tell all ur buddies how good they r an how they shut them damn hogs down an never say a word on track.the army should have got sum of them good texas curs u guys got an took them with them win they were looking for bin laden they would have caught his ass a long time ago an he would have never knew the were coming.lol. ;) ;)

Title: Re: all hound pack? Post by: RBB Roper on July 29, 2011, 02:06:50 pm I am not knocking any other breed or style here just postin my opion. I own cats curs plott and hound crosses my preference is my plott bitch and hound crosses they are silent on track which i prefer and my hounds turn up more hogs than my others. my hunting buddies have cats and curs and my hounds out do them. thats as far as striking the hogs now shutting 1 down is not their shining moment thats why I have my curs and cats and hunt with the guys i hunt with my dogs can find em theirs can shut em down this is my experience again not downing any body elses veiws

Post by: tomtom on July 29, 2011, 09:21:26 pm Cutter Bay, do you think your successes are the result of having hounds that are just a teeny little bit better bred than your average hound?? ;D
Title: Re: all hound pack? Post by: Centexhogdogger on July 29, 2011, 10:32:22 pm I have seen some great hounds
Some horrible hounds But it's the same with every dog!!!! Not just hounds Read my signiture Title: Re: all hound pack? Post by: tomtom on July 29, 2011, 10:40:07 pm Right on. What I should have typed was successes with open dogs, contrary to what most folks that run or have ran open dogs experience. Really, I was just trying to suck up to get on the list for a puppy.
