Title: do they forget????????? Post by: 3Whoghunter on August 12, 2011, 06:00:54 pm I was just given a registered treeing walker she WAS trained on coins but the guy said its been a long while since she's been hunted. I know she has had a couple of litters. I was just wondering if a dog forgets after not being hunted for a while and if so how easy is it to get her back on track. I have never hunted coins and would love to get into the sport. Any opinions are appreciated

Title: Re: do they forget????????? Post by: BOBDOG on August 13, 2011, 06:31:45 am LOL thats funny stuff right there, however, I have trained dogs on coins. Seriously, I have trained police dogs to do what is called evidence recovery or article search. The way it works is if a perp is believed to have dropped evidence while being chased or thrown something out in a field, you take the dog to the down wind side and cast. They are taught to search for anything with fresh human odor on it. So wanting a dog to tune in to small amounts of odor, I will hold a coin for a few minutes and then toss it out in a field. The dog gets a ball or retriever type dummy for finding it kind of like a narcotics or explosive detection dog. Anyway, if anyone wants a true coin dog, I can train one up for ya! lol

Title: Re: do they forget????????? Post by: Heaven Sent Kennel on August 13, 2011, 07:34:11 am I'm sure she's not lost it but she may not come out of the box, go half a mile and tree the first time. I'd try and trap an ol' coon. Then turn it loose and start her out on the right track that's nice and hot. I've laid my dogs up a lil bit and it never fails that if I don't mess with them with a hog a few days before I go back to hunting they are so wired that just want to go and find anything.

Title: Re: do they forget????????? Post by: tnhillbilly on August 13, 2011, 08:11:58 pm Might be a little rusty, bit should be fine. We used to have to lay our coon dogs up all summer, and it would take a few nights out to get them back in the groove, but the good ones always fell right back in.
Title: Re: do they forget????????? Post by: Bo Pugh on August 13, 2011, 10:09:02 pm we lay our dogs up all winter usually and then feb first dump them out, they dont seem to forget just a little lazy and out of shape after a little tuning there back on track
Title: Re: do they forget????????? Post by: J Carroll on August 16, 2011, 08:07:53 am Just go dump her on a good draw somewhere. If she has treed coon in the past, she will tree coon now.
