Title: Grinding it out... Pup Hunt 8.13.11 Post by: Noah on August 13, 2011, 01:00:46 pm Well it's gone from Sahara hot to Cambodia hot here lately... water's still down overall but the recent heavy rains have made the eight foot tall dog fennels grow out of control... making for stifling conditions to say the least... kinda like trying to get to a bay in an attic full of blown in insulation... a really BIG attic with snakes, gators, mosquitos, and 100% humidity... :P ;D We still been hittin' it just about every wknd for a few short hours in the mornin' before the cold chills set in... :o :D
... I gave a few of my older dogs to friends so I could spend maximum time on my up and comers Whaler and Spinner... sure enjoying watching them come on... We've knocked the hogs back perty good since February, the majority of what's left has learned to stay near the creek with the gators... which we been tryin' to avoid as much as possible... Found a 150# boar torn in half laying on the bank a few wks ago... :-\ Some good trashbreaking and gettin' burned on occasion ;D, but we still managing to grind out a few hogs every Saturday morning with the youngin's!!! Sawfish(pup out of my Shine dog I gave to Lee) has been on fire.... the last 20 hunts he's not struck out yet... he is a hog finding machine! Independent, not near as rough as his brother Whaler, but he's got as much, if not more stick than his momma... which sometimes can get old hours into it... rolleyes ;D... but all the same a fine nose on him! (http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/aprilcmetzger/149.jpg) Sawfish and Camo bayed this sow up real quick and ol' RCD Snapps finished the deal :D (Lane with Camo) (http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/aprilcmetzger/143.jpg) Snappa doin' what she does best... waitin' on somethin' to make a sound so she can go whoop it's a$$ rolleyes ;D (http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/aprilcmetzger/136.jpg) Made one round early with Whaler/Spin and bayed several nice black heffers up in the palmettos... rolleyes ... a little shock therapy got their mind right and they rolled another sow up... They real good at draggin' one down! ;D Whaler don't like waitin' on help so far... I got a strong feeling he gonna get a few scratches on him before he learns... ;D Spinner has healed up amazingly from her hamstring injury somehow... and doing fantastic (http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/aprilcmetzger/140.jpg) Fun hunt from a few wks ago, Shine and Spin bayed this lil' guy up in a nice spot that Lee's dad could get in and watch for a bit... and then got to see ol' Bucho knock him clean off his feet! ;D (http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm192/aprilcmetzger/131.jpg) Title: Re: Grinding it out... Title: Re: Grinding it out... Pup Hunt 8.13.11 Post by: got2catchem on August 13, 2011, 01:35:21 pm Pups look good man... I agree that the interesting and exciting part is recognizing that the "light bulb" has clicked on for a young dog and he begins to burn the woods up. Keep us posted.
Title: Re: Grinding it out... Pup Hunt 8.13.11 Post by: TShelly on August 13, 2011, 01:50:44 pm Nice job Noah.. It's tough grinding some hunts out with pups in this heat, but it'll be worth it come next spring when it's cool and all the hard work really takes effect!! Good looking pups, they are coming along just like you thought and hoped they would!!

Doing all that in the heat; brother, they're gonna be some kind of wonderful when it cools down. ;D You Florida boys sure got lots of stuff that can eat a guy( gators, sharks, jewfish,....); fascinating to an inlander like myself. Title: Re: Grinding it out... Pup Hunt 8.13.11 Post by: Noah on August 14, 2011, 06:10:03 pm Thanks yall, huntin' these pups has been about as gratifying a thing as I've experienced in a long time... every hunt they show me somethin' else.. definitely lost some catch(other than Whaler ;D) with the cross... whether that is a good thing or not has yet to be seen... all show the extreme athleticism and drive I was hoping to maintain...
Tony, me and Lee were laughin' about the same thing... if these dogs can catch hogs in this, the spring hunts are gonna be fun :D Time will tell if I would make the cross again... Justham, I still got Shiner... she'll be the last dog I EVER give up I promise you ;) ;D I been slackin' on takin' pictures and documenting their progression, but I'll try and put some more stuff up as they come along! Title: Re: Grinding it out... Pup Hunt 8.13.11 Post by: Oly on August 15, 2011, 09:46:11 am You should try breeding ol-bucho and getting some good hunting whites out of him--- his mother is gone and his ol-man is OOOOLD dog now.

Title: Re: Grinding it out... Pup Hunt 8.13.11 Post by: crackerc on August 15, 2011, 11:40:30 am Noah , I am glad SOMEONE is out feeding the skeeters and catching a few hogs, because it isn't ME!! :o
Been waaayyy too hot for me to hunt, much to Dave's dismay. He is still wanting to get after the hogs, but it just isn't worth losing a dog over in this heat, as far as I am concerned. I did take the two young red females down there last Sat evening and looked the new place over. I think its about 2,000 acres with a couple lakes but the hog sign is not close to any of the lakes so "hopefully" we won't have to worry about lizards when we go. I talked to Dave and if you want to try a night hunt the Sat night we talked about, we are on. I can sit on the box with a cold drink in my hand and holler you and Dave out of the swamps.......... ;D Title: Re: Grinding it out... JUST a friendly word. O I still don't know who you are, but I do appreciate the advice. I'd sure like to hear whatever you can tell me about his dam/sire... We all absolutely LOVE the dog... as far as a walk in catch dog, I couldn't ask for more. I've been contemplating breeding him but I would not make a cross unless the gyp was proven... I may try and draw a straw off him and store it if I don't find a suitable female soon. Thanks for any info Oly Title: Re: Grinding it out... Thanks for any info Oly I am Oly, live over in the east coast of Florida ---been arnd for quite some time now mostly with Dogos. Bucho’s breeder is a good friend of mine and mentor. I know Bucho’s line very well, and everything I have is based on his stuff, Bucho’s father is a very noble animal proven in the field (I do mean HUNTED) and tested on cats, I have a son of his who has produced some nice hunting Dogos as well. Buchos mother was an ornery bitch with a beautiful build not sure she was ever hunted BUT I know lots of her sons have been hunted and like Bucho are still out there doing their thing, its GOOD old blood. If you want specific information on the parents or littermates hit me up on a personal message. Title: Re: Grinding it out... Title: Re: Grinding it out... Pup Hunt 8.13.11 Post by: Noah on August 16, 2011, 10:30:43 pm One of my ranchers, that I really respect(hard headed as they come ;D), used to hog hunt a lot when he was younger... He owns an OLD OLD line of Florida cow dogs that have been in his family a long, long time... The dogs have great natural instinct but are lacking "physically" in my opinion... but that's besides the point...
...anyways, he had always told us about the hound/cow dog cross and what good hog dogs he'd had from that cross so he up and went and breed one of his gyp cow dogs to a sure-e-nuff bear dog owned by Brad Mcnaltin... only 2 of em made it to huntin' age, one we culled because of no interest... the other belongs to my huntin' partner Lee now... Inconsistent dog to this point, comin' 2yo... sometimes she uses her nose and trails one up... sometimes not... loose dog that's not gonna get another dog hurt... but sure not gonna make a runner stop..
