EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

I have been watching this happen for 3 years now but it is so weird that I could not tell anyone that had not witnessed it with me because it is hard for even me to beleive this much less someone that wasnt there. I have a ranch that is in Fortbend County and almost every time we hunt this ranch a yote starts barking at us. For the first few months that this happened we just went about our hunting as if nothing was going on but it had me puzzled because this yote would not give up and he would change his bark so that it sounded like one of my dogs. Then the yote would sound like another one of my dogs and then he would make this weird yodle. I told a friend about the yote and that day we decided to just follow the yote and see what happens. Well it didnt take long and we where on hogs. That night I was talking about this with several hunters and that had been with me when this happened and they though the same as me that the yote was leading us to the hogs. Well from then on we followed the yote and every time the yote took us to hogs. This is very cool I was thinking, but no one would believe me except for the people who had witnessed it first hand. I have many people that have seen this happen now and yesterday we caught it all on video. This has now happened more than 20 times now.

Has anything like this ever happened to you is my question? What reasons do you think that this is happening? I am assuming that I have taught these yotes that if they take us to the hogs that they will get a good dinner. I have always left the hog dead for the yotes when they help us find them.

Absolutely, you taught him. That is really awesome, that's exactly how wolves were domesticated to begin with. Keep it up, eventually they may approach you.

I live in Dallas, almost in Mesquite. Right off Military Pky. there is 20 acres this man mows. In the middle of the day the coyotes will follow the tractor and catch the rats that are running from the mower. Every time he mows they will be there. Sidney

Do u kill the hogs?  If so he has learned u will give him a free meal if he takes u to the hog.  This would be my guess.

Wow! I have had them following me on my tractor while mowing but cant imagine them leading me to hogs. Can't wait to see the video, oughta be pretty neat to watch

Do u ever see em, or just hear em and run the dogs in that direction? Just a thought,  do you worry your dogs will start being dependent on the coyotes and lose some of their "go get em"?

I have had one at a bay before that didnt want to leave but never had one get a bay started.  Thats awsome.  Cant wait to see the video.

Here is the part where the coyote is leading us we caught the sow about 400 yards past the end of this video. I cut the rest out because we had 4 RCD's on the ground.

I normally take the hogs alive but we have left a few out there from time to time.

Man that just straight up spooky...  ;D  .. my foggy brain seems to remember something called symbiosis, or "learned dependant interaction between different species"....

Defentitely appears to be a similar story to that of the domestication of the dog...

... I'd try givin' the yote a que as you come on the ranch(horn, whistle, etc.) and leaving a "reward hog" each time...

I really wonder if he does not associate yall with a free meal of pork and is tring to lead yall to the pork so ur dogs do the hard work and he gets the free meal they are smart buggers so it does not surprise me and is neat as can be.

Just don't forget they are wild animals with rabies !

That'd be my guess he knows he finds em then let's you guys do the tough part and kill em and he's got an easy meal. Its crazy to think that he observed you for that long and caught on to what goes on, and put everything together.

I know the buzzards around my place just seem to fall from the sky when I drive my tractor to the bone pile on my place.  It flat out amazed me the last time I hauled some off.

In 2008 I saw yotes at 2 different bays helping my dogs, but since the yote has been leading us to hogs we havent seen the yote even though it has been within 20 yards of us.

I do not know what the reasoning in behind what the yote is doing, but I will keep following the yote as long as he allows us to.

why did you quit filmimg?

 because we had to run 700 yards to the hog its very shaky and not much to see until the end.

Maybe it's boring being a yote, so he Is just looking for a new hobby

A new line of hog dogs! Coyote Curs! I wonder if it could be a cross with a dog. I've seen 'em do some amazing stuff. They will definitely find a way to get an easy meal. I had one eat a watermelon that was on my porch a few years ago. We had a pack of them kill a full grown cow and her calf. I set some traps around what was left of the cow and caught 33 coyotes in 2 weeks. I hated to loose the cow but I would have loved to see how they did it.

Come on now coyotes bark when dogs come into there area. I think there are areas where game hangs out. Im not saying it aint so. Just sounds strange to me.

If the yote eats one of my stinky terriers, I will not be at all suprised and only slightly annoyed.

That's crazy... Same thing happend to me, I had a yote barking like that the other night imitating the dogs he stayed in one place almost sounded like one of the dogs at first till we got closer, we didn't go to him though next time I will to see if he is doing the same thing ur yote is doin. I believe it's possible

... now that you metion it... we've been havin' the same thing happen on and off where we hunt lately...

..we'll be goin' to a bay and hear another dog bayin' in another direction... similar to my dogs but defenitely coyote-ish.. ever time we get close it stops... we've got lot's of yotes where we hunt, but hardly ever see them

Went out by myself about 6mnths ago, just me and my Shine dog.. she bayed up a sow and you shoulda heard the yotes rally and head to us... :o :-\... made me real nervous about her bayin' one up way away from me... as many yotes as it sounded like, I'd be worried they might try and take her down with the hog...

..my dogs won't honor it, so I never have tried to send them that way... but I might start trying...   Interesting stuff

Makes me wonder if there's been an onslaught of hybridization or if we're at the forefront of north American wild canine domestication

The yotes did it again last friday night. Got it on video again. Unfortunatly the last hog we got on was a giant. He recked all 4 of my Dogos. He would just walk around with the dogs looking like ornaments on a tree. He was out in the midle of a lake that has almost dried up and when we tried to get to them we where up to our knees in mud plus it got dark on us it was not a good situation.  That was the second hog that I could not get to to help my dogs. They fought him for 50 minutes before we could get to them. Now he is a giant with no ears which makes me worry if we ever find him again.

Man I wish you'd take some damn pictures and tell some huntin' stories... >:(  I'd like to have seen that ;D

Sorry to hear that joe. Hope the dogs heal up quickly. Guess that's why the yote led you guys to him, he didn't want any part of that hog. Y'all will get him one day.

 The yote doesnt do it every time but it is very neet when it does. We heard him on one hunt out of 7 hunts this last week. We caught several hogs before getting on the big boar. Probly not going to post this video until I can edit some parts out

So the next evening we go out again but this time no catch dogs. we got on 2 good boars. Shawn had our back with his gun, but the boars where in thick cover so we had to bust them out and hope these young dogs could stop it again in a better place to shoot it but it got dark on us and no hogs that evening.

Man, this is really awesome, and cool.  One thing is that always gets me is that so many people seem surprised at the the intelligence of animals.  Coyotes are pretty smart I don't think it is really weird or all that surprising, but it is very very cool.  It is how dogs were created in the first place(domesticated).  They put two and two together, and they even have to way the risk, such as will the hunter appreciate the cooperation or shoot the yotes.  number 2 the coyotes are probably smarter than half of the dumbass brain dead people.  they're a hell of a lot smarter than any POS from Pete Uh.

The yotes have been quiet latley but I have seen many new youngsters running around the hay feilds. I asume they where drawing my dogs away from their pups. We will see next year.

USHOG i tend to agree with you.   I trap coyotes for the state. they are real territorial they will decoy an agressive dog as far as he will chase him and trot  behind atimid dog right back to you.    In the spring till early fall they are pulling you away from their pups. and when there is one at the bay he is a subadult roaming without his own pack.

I was there one of the times and we ended up catching 5 hogs that morning ! I believe he has found the hogs for us

i WAS IN A TREE STAND ONE TIME IN SOME TIMBER AND GOT WATCH A PACK OF COYOTES CORNER A RABBIT. i SAW A RABBIT RUN PAST. THEN SEVEN COYOTES CAME UP SIX FORMED A BIG ARCH LIKE A CUP TO CATCH IT AND ONE CIRCLED AND PUSHED THE RABBIT INTO THE CUP WHERE IT WAS KILLED. I AM NOT SCARED OF COYOTES BUT MANY TIMES WHEN WALKING OUT OF THE WOODS AT DARK AFTER BOW-HUNTING I HAVE BEEN POSITIVE THEY WERE RUNNING MY TRAIL THEY WENT EVERYWHERE I HAD JUST BEEN KINDA GIVES YOU THE WILLIES ESPECIALLY SINCE ITS ALWAYS A LARGE PACK THAT DOES IT. i HAVE PROBABLY KILLED 40 TO 50 DEER OUT OF THERE AND MAYBE15 TURKEYS IN THE LAST 8 OR 9 YEARS. I HAVE BEGAN TO WONDER IF THEY CHECK MY TRACK TO SEE IF I KILLED ANYTHING THEY CAN EAT. ALSO THEY DON'T RUN FROM ME MUCH WHEN THEY SEE ME BUT THEY DO MY BUDDY ITS WEIRD. i GUESS IT TAKES A SNEAKY LOW DOWN COYOTE TO KNOW ONE. i BELIEVE THAT THEY LEAD YOU TO HOGS. iF YOU SPEND MUCH ALONE TIME IN THE WOODS YOU WILL SEE ALOT THAT YOU DONT TELL BECAUSE NO ONE WILL BELIEVE YOU. fOR EXAMPLE i SAW A RED FOX PLAYING WITH A DEER, i'VE SEEN EAGLES DIVING FOR TURKEYS ONCE. sOME DEER i SPOOKED TURKEY HUNTING LATER CAME OUT IN THE FIELD AND HERDED THE TURKEYS AWAY FROM ME THEY WORKED EM LIKE CUTTING HORSES. i SAW A HAWK GRAB A SQUIRREL NEAR FEEDING TURKEYS AND THE TURKEYS RESCUED IT. i SHOT A DEER WITH ITS SHEDS FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR TIED AROUND ITS KNECK IN A BALL OF BAILING TWINE.ETC........ 

mY JAGD ALSO WAS RUNNING WITH A COYOTE CHASING A PIG THAT HE COULDNT GET STOPPED IT WAS FUNNY THE COYOTE RAN BY LOOKED LIKE HE WAS SMILING.

No but there is is some boys from May tx that said when they got a caught hog at a bay there was a yote there in the group of dogs not fighting just kinda standing there!

thats way cool. Ive noticed alot of times when you catch one at night, the yotes will come in close and start screaming. never thought one would actually come in to a bayed hog though. I agree that someone will try to sell a coyote as a strike dog next week.
