Title: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: Noah on August 18, 2011, 09:20:18 am I've had them rally on me at night before, if I hadn't been right there to the bay quick... I wonder if a big group of yotes might try and take a hog dog down? I know it's made me hesitant to hunt that place at night again...
Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: justincorbell on August 18, 2011, 09:31:52 am we havent ever had one taken out by coyotes but it almost became a regular occurrance out in labelle in the marsh when we have dropped 1-2 dogs at night and shortly after a bay started we would hear 4-5 dogs and when we would get to the bay there would be a couple coyotes in on it, they never went after our dogs and would back out when we got close so i never minded much, we would gut em on the spot and let the coyotes get after it. pretty cool stuff i think.
Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: Mike on August 18, 2011, 09:36:52 am I've had dogs chased by them a couple of times. Ran them right back to us and the coyotes just stood and stared at us for a minute.
Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: Bar R Ranch on August 18, 2011, 09:40:08 am I have a walker dog that i coon hunt, and he used to be real bad about runnin yotes. I tried to break him from it but i couldn't. One night i cut him loose, and he got way in there and started opening. Then all of a sudden he shut up and came running back with a pack of yotes right behind him. :o He hasnt ran a coyote since. ;D
Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: waylon-N.E. OK on August 18, 2011, 09:43:27 am I ain't ever seen a single coyote bad enough to kill a large dog ever, My cur dogs trash on them some times and about any cur dog can whoop these little coyotes we have ( 40lbs average ) my old dog cowboy would kill singles if they were dumb enough to stay and fight him. I think they get blamed a lot for missing dogs that they had nothing to do with. Maybe ya'll have bigger/tougher coyotes than me but packs here won't even stand to fight a single dog, they will bogger bark until your dogs build to them then there gone. We have lot's of Wolf ( coyote ) hunters here though and yotes fear dogs for good reason, it's run or die.
Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: Noah on August 18, 2011, 09:51:44 am Our yotes are the same size, I'm not worried if I have a couple dogs down... but I hunt just one bay dog a lot that can come bayed miles away in rough stuff... yall are makin' me feel a little better about it though!
Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: skunkhounds on August 18, 2011, 09:54:24 am never had them get my dogs but have had them at they bay until you get there then they are gone
Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: Reuben on August 18, 2011, 11:49:41 am It seems to me that they are territorial and will whip some dogs if they get too close to the den especially when they have pups in the late spring and early summer.
Sometimes you can hear them running along close to the dogs when they are trailing. Never lost a dog to them though. Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: chainrated on August 18, 2011, 11:57:17 am We've had them come to the dogs bayed a lot, usually ends up in a broke bay and sometimes a fight. The dogs have killed a coyote a few times. Anytime they come in on the dogs bayed we send every bulldog we have and any rough dog that will kill a coyote.. Had a dog get the mange from coyotes also..
Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: Bar W on August 18, 2011, 12:31:33 pm Pretty sure my uncle lost a pup to some yotes this year but she was five months and no more than twenty lbs. To small and young to be on a live hunt in my opinion but not my dog so not my call. There were a few yotes at the bay saw a couple running off as we approached and couple more on the loseing end of a fight with my two lacy's. Luckily the bulldogs had the hog caught. Never found any sign of the pup but my uncle thought one of the yotes might have been carrying something in it's mouth.

Post by: airduster29 on August 18, 2011, 12:35:39 pm I had a pack of 4 coyotes chassing my lead dog across a circle one night my dog would run and soon as one got close he would turn around and slam it the run for me again then do it again and again he lost his left ear to them but that was all he was suited up tho to ;D they got within 15 yrds of me I had no gun but I threw rocks lol

Now Bar W I could see that, or even a little house dog maybe. I should have been more clear in my first post. Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: SCHitemHard on August 18, 2011, 06:32:56 pm we had a big family in a patch of woods on the farm that would harass the dogs on their chains, my bulldog and my 1/2 dogo were good about catchin one who came to close
never lost a dog, but i know of a couple hunters that have lost coon hounds to a pack Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: Jabo on August 18, 2011, 08:43:00 pm Noah, I'm in Florida also. We hunt some mine property that is flat covered up with yotes. Back about 6 years ago I used to deer hunt on a lil peice family land around Groveton, and would sleep next to the fire by myself for weeks at a time, ahh the good ol days. Anyway my old heavyweight Catahoula Gator would sleep next to me until I got up to go hunting when he went on the chain. Well one day I was stalking some doe thru the woods when I heard some awful racket back at camp, the doe's took off and so did i. When i got back i saw gator happy as a clam and a dead coyote, the yote had come for a free meal and bit off more than he could chew. I drug him off and dumped him and looked over gator. Two nights later I woke up to the sounds of a nasty brawl, I got the spotlight out just in time to see him crunch another lil male yote. Went to grab him and found 2 dead ones! Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: T-Bob Parker on August 18, 2011, 09:55:10 pm He wasn't the greatest hog dog as he had a nasty temper with other males and was about the trashiest dog I've ever seen :D but those old hunting trips he sure did come in handy. I was a wannabe pioneer and often didn't bring any groceries. That trashy cur could catch coon on the ground and a few times even caught rabbits for us
Me and jhefern were hunting one night and the dogs ran down a yote and stretched that sucker out real good Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: waylon-N.E. T-bob your Gator and my cowboy must have been litter mates cause they sound like twin brothers ;D Your's wasn't a red patchwork leopard dog was? Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: ole shep on August 18, 2011, 10:42:32 pm I had dogs on chains down in South Texas . A big pack of 8 or 10 came in and sent some mean ass hog and cow dogs to the back of there boxs. then was eating their feed when I came out. They wernt scared of me to much either. I guess the dogs thought the chain would bother thier fighting abalities cause if they would have been lose it would have been a bloody mess.

I shot this guy from my front porch one morning. I had been having problems with a coyote coming in the yard and even had the dogs bay one next to the yard fence a couple of nights before I shot this one. Title: Re: Anybody ever lost a baydog to coyotes? Post by: J Carroll on August 19, 2011, 03:24:58 pm I've had a single hound trail and tree right in the middle of a pack more times than I can count and have never had any problems. My mom and dad have had 2 or 3 little house dogs get killed by them though.
