Title: Bull dog with cropped ears
Post by: zachW on August 23, 2011, 07:58:51 am
Ok got a red pit he is big and athletic and will catch hard, only problem is he has cropped ears.  He was a house dog and the people i got him from said he gets yeast infections bad.  Well last night when i was feeding i grabbed his head and he jerked away his left ear was swollen and full of crusty dirt i have never noticed it before and have had him like a year.  We cleaned it with q tips soaked with peroxide.  But it was still kinda swollen, what do i do?  Just keep cleaning it?  My girlfriend said she cleaned them a week ago they were pretty bad, any advice i have never had a dog with no ears lol

Your best bet is to run by the vet and pick up a bottle of drops. Can't remember the name of them but cost about $20 and lasts quite a while.

Other than that, keep his ears clean and you can swab them with a 50/50 solution of white vinigar and water (lowers the PH in there and makes it inhospitibal for yeast and bacteria)

I am fairly certain that is the stuff my vet gives me.     Couldnt remember the name offhand earlier.

Its tender because he is probably scratching at it--- if you use Zymocs follow the instructions to the T.

Crop or un-cropping has absolutely NOTHING to do with ear issues, it is an INDIVIDUAL DOG issue, I have had issues on cropped and un-cropped dogs equally and have done LOTS of research and asked LOTS of folks its an old wife's tale.

Right at the moment I have 10 dogs ALL cropped and have issues with just one.

X2 i had pit thst had real bad ear problems talked to the vet and he recommeded that the dags ears be cropped. it would allow more air into the ear to allow a drien process. never did but take it for what its worth, i just kept up on the drops and cleaning, maybe i should have tried it myself.

diluted bleach water is a good place to start or keep clean in between flare ups. Colloidal silver works most time as well, if not get the ear remedies mentioned above by old hound men  ;)

clean it with a 50/50 of water and vinegar then take some mineral oil and a qtip and rub his ear out with it, it will somewhat protect his ear

IF the crop was done with FUNCTION in mind it should be just long enough to provided some cover and yet short enough to prevent snags---

IF the crop was done for LOOKS in mind and is to short then I absolutely agree with you that it can cause difficulties for the animal.

Try the vinegar wash as suggested, the problem probably is yeast in his ears. U can also get some athletes foot creme and rub it all n the ear and canal. Also may help to splash a dollop of apple cider vinegar in his water. Good luck
