Title: Freestone County Hunt
Post by: TShelly on February 17, 2009, 07:47:30 pm
Finally after a few weeks of  slow hunts with  just small shoats, bulldog missing  a big hog and a trackless hunt we finally got another good one in. This Sunday me, Marshall, Brandon, Big E, and Daniel went out to another large cattle operation in Freestone county. We met everyone at camp and drove 45 min to the East side of the property around 9:30... The dogs got out and hunted hard for a while and after a few beat downs on some puppy's  for baying cows it was 11:30 and we still hadnt found a hog. While checking our third block of woods we stopped by an old pond and sat for a good 20 min, we were just about to pull off when a dog started booger barking not 40 yards from us. Just abt that time Hi- Bawl came over the hill and confirmed that it was  definitely a hog. The dogs had him stopped in less than 100 yards and we cut 2 bulldogs loose and caught a nice 220 boar hog! That was the only hog for that piece  of woods and all the dogs came back to us, except for Big e's gyp Two-Face she had rolled out and was already a 1.5 on the Garmin. We went to her and she had a big sow bayed in a washout, the cur dogs quickly caught her. We tied her and rolled out to Cowboy who was 864 yards away and caught another 140lb boar hog. By now it was almost 1 and we had covered 17 miles already, we checked a few more blocks of woods with no hogs and decided to head to the trucks for lunch. After some much needed burgers and refreshments we decided to check one more piece of woods to try for a large no-eared boar hog that had been wreaking havoc on some local stock. It was 3:30 and ALL we had fresh was Big E's best old dog Roscoe and Marshall's best ol dog Bud. We dumped out a few more puppies and all of Byrons dogs and Broussards two new up and comers. Within 5 min Roscoe was bayed, we raced around realized there were 2 bays.  The cur dogs quickly had a 190lb boar squealing, tied him and dumped him off at the trailer. Meanwhile Marshall was launching Chico off of a 15 foot bank to catch a nice 160lb sow with just Bud. Marshall tied him and already Roscoe was bayed again. He headed to them with the puppies and NO tie rope and of course the cur dogs caught a 200lb barr as soon as he gets there. So he sat there for the next 20 min yelling for help. While all this was going on I showed back up to the action with a few dogs and Byrons dog Clyde had a big sow bayed directly behind Marshall's 4 wheeler with his bulldog on it, but no Marshall haha... He was on his barr about 400 yards away. The cur dogs quickly caught my sow, which I got some decent photos of. We tied her and went around to Roscoe bayed again. Broussard cut Boss loose and caught the nice lil red listed boar. Roscoe rolled out again and bayed not 150 yards away on a big sow. We went into the bay turned Cane loose, well it was train wreck and the sow ended up between my legs with 8 dogs behind her. They made it for abt  80 yards and caught a good 220 sow. Roscoe and BUd rolled out one more time and stopped a nice boar in the pond. It was 5:30 and in 2 hours we had caught 8 hogs!! It was the hardest easiest hunt we've had lol Alot of thanks to Jason for having us out. Chance, Byron, John and Blake it was a great time guys. Loook forward to hunting again

Good deal, please tell me that yall barred that red listed boar  ;D  I have a mule footed red listed sow that would make a good match for him here in my pen (raised from a shoat)  Hunts like that are sure alot of fun.

Matt

Josh,

Don't you know there are no more hogs in Leon county ;)

Actually I have a few places up there near my farm(Centerville) that I have not hunted since last year. Maybe we can get together sometime after contest and see if we can scare something up.
