EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Hi all, names Jeff. I've been trolling this webpage the past few days and just "Lacy" dogs in general on these forums. I've got two lacy's one male(5 months) & the other female(1 year) Both dogs have had plenty of work blood trailing and that is my main focus to get them certified at the moment with UBT.

I've got land in Cooper, It's right off of the river so there are hogs around and I'd like to get my pups introduced to some hogs and figure them out before they eventually come across a hog in the woods and try and figure one out themselves. I'm located in Dallas, btw. Only head out to the ranch on the weekends due to work. Can somebody point me in the right direction or who I should be talking to about maybe tagging along on a hunt and seeing how things are or if possible a bay pen event that I could get them introduced to a hog?

My goal is to get my dogs familiar with hogs and if possible have them track and find their own hog and have it bayed up until I can get there and shoot it.

Shoot a hog in the flank. Put them on the trail. 2 birds one stone.

Five months you don't want to get hurt. But the one year old I would put in a pen with an experienced dog so she can figure things out. Then with a tough sow that does not play nice. That way the first time she sees a rough pig it is in a controlled environment. But then I would just hit the woods. I don't hunt  dog under one but that is just me. I have never owned a Lacy.

pepper what part of dallas are you from and pm me your number i was in waxahacje south of dallas i'm in east texas now but i can put you in touch with some locals around dallas .

I'm not currently in the DFW area but my permanent address is there. I have a few good gigs to train dogs on in a pen there and am back in that area all the time. I also have a lacy that I hunt with. I can help you out on the weekends I'm home and alot in december. I grew up tsggin along with my uncle doin bay and shoot so I'm sure he could help out with some pointers. I was thinking 5 months might be a little small but I'm sure he can still get in a pen with a smaller one. I'd rather them see a hog in a controlled environment before out in the woods. Once they get that introduction over with it's straight to the woods. I'll say these dogs have too much "character" and plenty of stamina.

i would`nt mind seeing a few more lacy`s work! and im sure i can get you access to a bay pen where u can see ur dogs work first. in the sulphersprings area.

BIG CHRIS, that would be perfect considering my land is located in Cooper. I'm getting a lot of help and plenty of PMs, thanks guys. That is a good looking lacy by the way! I would love to see some other Lacys work as well. Went to the TLGDA fun day and had a good time watching all of the dogs work together.


How many of you work your Lacys on hogs outside of the bay pen?

Also could a Bull Terrier make a catch dog of any sort or be of any use? Haven't really heard a lot about these dogs but the one I'm thinking of has some potential I believe.

jpepper trip is short to medium ranged hog crazy fool. i hunt him every chance i get. he tends to be a little on the rougher side, he will catch out if he can. but is also smart enough to know his limits. and as far as the bull terrier goes if he works and catches i say use him! i have seen a few guys on here post about them, and they like em just fine enough.

My lacy gets in a bay pen maybe once a year, usually durring summer when im bored and wanna put her with a pup...she is always in the woods other than that.

Sounds a lot like my female.... She is rough. That is how I'd like them both to be, catch out if they can but know their limits! Don't want to just throw them out to the wolves so to speak, so would like to get them introduced in a controlled environment first. As for the Bull Terrier, it is a good friends dog. He's only been on a hunt once but with minimal work I'm sure this dog would be damn good and hog crazy.

I'm going to talk to a guy tonight that messaged me about taking the pups and putting them into a bay pen this weekend so looking forward to that! Don't plan on ever working my dogs in a bay pen just woods though.

JPepper- I'm 30 minutes from Garland.  Hunt allot of this area around Kaufman and Hunt county.  Ive hunted with most of the guys on the thread.  I'm down with whatever whenever just shoot me a PM anytime.

Big Chris that is a good looking dog. I had never seen a lacy before. Anybody else have some lacy pics they can post? Are most lacys known to be pretty gritty?

jcarroll i really cant say. from what most have said and what i have seen is they tend to be a pain in the backside sometimes! there was a thread on them  awhile back ago, Tcolt has a real nice gyp. and purebreed has a few nice dogs to. i would love to get my hands on a pup, or knew someone around my area or atleast within 100 miles that worked and raises some. i cant speak for the whole breed but trip knows how to work a hog and knows his limits, if ever given the chance and worken with a nother rough dog he will catch. but here lately he seems to wait till he knows ur on ur way, before he gets catchy, the last 7to 8 times out when we get with in 50 yards thats when he would turn on the pressure, may be good may be bad. but i aint had a hog bust bay yet when this dog is on the ground and at the bay. IF it does become a problem i guess we will have to go to back him up school.

Well decided to head out to the ranch this weekend and hunt in the morning..... Was getting ready to head out when I hear Roush barking out by the feeder behind the house. Stepped outside on the porch and shot this beauty in the back of the head with a seventeen from a 100 yards out or so. It took about 5 steps and dropped. Technically I suppose this was Roush first hog!

Took advantage of the pork on the ground and decided to drag the hog about 500-600 yards with the ranger and let the pups put some work in. Put them both on that trail and they found the hog, nose rarely ever lifted off the ground.
