I have heard of people trying to shock a dog when it opens on the track in hopes to turn the dog silent. I'm considering purchasing a dog that may have a little hound in her and does yip on the track and I would like to break her of it but fear i would do more harm than good. My question is has any had success in Turning a Open dog silent with the shock collar or any other method.. Is this even possible in your opinion?

I have heard that cutter bay has had some luck getting them blue ticks to be closed mouth.  ;D

I wont say it cant be done, but I think you would run a greater risk of ruining the dog than breaking it.
not being smart, but If your wanting silent then why buy the dog? If its catching hogs regularly  then I wouldn't worry bout the yipping.

My dogs r silent, but she would be a good addition to my pack but im afraid of her making my dogs open. But yes you may be right if i want silent i may jus need to pass her up and find a silent dog of her quality.

now ive seen dogs that was open. and run with another open dog. that is more wide open and and they go simi open and almost silent while hunting. . but as soon as  they get  a runner . then its back to wide open..till he stops.

I am thinking about buying a moped to commute to work. If I tell all my friends it is cool to own one, will it be cool?   ???

Moral of my sarcasm, don't buy something in hopes to use it differently than it was intended.  ;)

the only way to truely getting this done with out eliminating any drive is to get the dog surgically debarked, but if it is doing the job now, why reivent the wheel?

My dog Red opens on hot tracks and so far the hogs haven't told me I should get a quieter dog ;)

Has it affected your silent dogs any?

lost a dog this summer that was silent, with other silent dogs or buy himself.  we took a new young dog one day and when he opened up, so did older dog.  sure made for a long day, never hunted with the open dog again, old went rite back to silent! 

Not as far as their vocal tendencies, but he's a hard hunting fool and in my opinion while some hogs may very well run a bit harder, I believe his work ethic has shortened a few races by pulling other dogs to his hog. Could be wrong though.

Guess it just depends on each individual dog.

My "Pistol" dog does not say a word until he is looking at swine, while running with my open blueticks. He has been raised with them since he was 6 weeks old. He's been hunting with them since he was around 4-5 months old. A dog will do what it inherited at birth. His piers don't dictate how he gives mouth. Breaking it out of them is a waste of time and effort. That's my side of it anyway.

i,m with cutter on this     something i have seen work on younger dogs is put bark collar on them at all times in kennels or chain  and take off when load up to go hunting    but hounds are hard headed    trying it on bluetick now thats 6 months old

I am currently attempting this or just hoping it will only yip once in a while.
I just picked up a 6 month old kemmer cur pup that has not seen a pig yet.
When I got him he was a big time BARKER! He barked all the way home, he barked at me when I let him out, he barked at my other dogs, he barked at feeding time, he barked before I opened his kennel, he barked at his own shadow and then howled in the morning!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got him from a friend who's dogs are open mouthed.
I put a "puppy" bark collar on him and within two days he wasted a new set of batteries!
I went and bought a big dog bark collar and now he is doing much better and has learned the word hush.
He doesnt bark when I come home or at feeding time any more. I can sleep all night and not hear him at all.
My other dogs were quiet to begin with, but they are completly silent at home. My neighbor who is a veterinarian aske me the other day how I trained my dogs to never bark! It took a bark collar and many a nights waking up at 3 am and going out to the kennels with a belt.

Anyway, I am hoping that making the pup wear the bark collar 100% of the time until just before I drop the tail gate will make him more quiet than his instinct would have him be.
Since my other dogs are so quiet and well behaved, I think he will learn that to be in "this"  pack he must be quiet unless looking at a hog

one funny thing is how the dogs correct themselves. One day he would not stoop barking as I was going to let him out the kennel. Well I just waited till he stopped to show him he was not going to get what he wanted by barking. After he stopped and sat down, I opened the door and let him out. he started running and yipping towards the back yard. One of my other dogs immediatly tackled him and pinned him to the ground. My dog would let him up and the puppy would begin to bark, my dog would again jump on him. I watched this from a distance. Finally the dog quit barking after the other dog would let him up and then they all played together in silence. It was pretty cool

I wont care if he does end up being open as long as he finds hogs.....i just wont hunt him with others who hate open dogs

My hounds don't bark around the house if I tell them to hush.  They don't wear a shock collar in their pens.  Yet, when I dump them on sign, they are going to open if they smell it.  Please realize it is a totally different reason that they are barking in the timber.  I wish you luck, but out of years of dealing with dogs, I am confident when I say, if your dog wants to bark on track, the pack he is running with won't convince him differently.   ;)

Idk cutter beulla didn't say a word when her and captain Bates that boar hog. That was pretty funny.

lesson learned, when using a bark collar on a dog, you have to check it every day!
I have been in a shutdown and working 16 hours every day. I finally got off early today and when I took the shock collar off the dog I noticed the electrodes had actually burned two small holes into the dogs neck!
He was acting fine, I am just glad I decided to check the collar today.

I can not belive the damage it caused. Please be aware of this danger.

It is not so much "burning" from the shock, it is "wearing" the prongs into the neck because of how tight you have to keep it on them for it to opperate correctly.  Most shock collars will tell you in the instructions to not leave it on a  dog for more than 8 continuous hours.

Beulah did not trail that boar.  She winded it.  She fell bayed after about 2 bawls while zeroing in.  Lisa and I were right there to see it.  You and Rowdy were off picking flowers or something.  Glad you were keeping the bull dog safe while we were in the heat of battle.   ;D
