Sometimes I feed the sportsmix blue bag 26 percent protein, 18percent fat ($25.50)

this dog food is pretty good for the money

Sportsmix in the black bag seems to be better, 24 percent protein, 20 percent fat ($25.50)

Diamond Hi Energy is $24.99 and 24 percent protein and 20 percent fat...but I have never used this on my dogs so I am asking what you guys think is the best of the 2...and why...

I will also cut driving by ten miles if I switch to diamond...

I also looked into the Retriever in the blue bag for 21.99 but probably not as good a quality...

All bags discussed above are 50#s...

I use to feed Retriever high protein but it really didn't keep the weight on.
I switched to Sportmix 24/20 about a year ago and like it a lot. It seems to keep the weight on & they stay muscled up real good. 
I really didn't care for Diamond to much.

We started out feeding Diamond Hi Energy and then we switched to Sportsmix Black Bag and I would have to say Sportsmix Black Bag hands down for us. Not because of location or cost but because the dogs look much better and on less feed. Less poo also.  :)

I have fed all three at one time or another.... Sportmix would be my choice of them..... I would feed the Retriever over Diamond also..

There are plenty more threads about all of these brands you can look back on also...  ;)

Sport mix definitely cuz i called diamond on there high energy because my dogs were getting runny stools and they told me that if a batch of food is low on fat or protein they spray it with corn oil to get the percentage right

Reuben, I fed Diamond High Energy and my dogs maintained weight but had yellow stools and LOTS of it. There coats were stayed dull.
After 4 months I switched to Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice Formula and couldn't be more pleased. It takes less feed and there coats are getting shiny and silky by the day. They have lots of energy. Their stools are firm and not much of it. It cost more but I feed less so it's just a tad more when you look at it that way.

Sportmix 24/20 for sure. I can't find it for no $25 tho...

Sportmix worked much better for me "24/20"  I can run my dogs every day and they keep weight and muscle on, couldn't keep the weight on with diamond.

I tried both, and Im staying with the sportmix. The dogs liked to eat the diamond better, but when you opened the bag, it smells like bacon grease and you could see its sprayed with something. The dogs loved it but had the yellow runny stool others talked about.
I feed all my dogs 2 cups of sportmix from my 80 boxer pet to my mt cur pup. The dogs are full of energy and they are all pretty muscled up.
One thing I have noticed when I hunt with others that I know dont feed sportmix is that while on the hunt their dogs take at least 4 times more craps than my dogs. Its weird.
Where do you get it for the 25 bucks?
I know Rockys, Rifiels, and Angleton feed store have sport mix, but all for around 28 a bag

bought 3 bags about 3 weeks ago and the price for sportsmix blue bag and black bag are both $25.50 each but not including tax and is about the cheapest in our neck of the woods...

I had already read somewhere on here that the sportsmix is better than diamond hi energy but wanted to make sure because I am picky about dog nutrition and want to make sure I get the best in this price range...

everyone, thanks for the input...I will stick with the sportsmix black bag...and if it gets too high for me I will check out the Retriever hi protein... :)

I feed victor 24-20 and I'm only paying $27.50 per bag right now. Its a bit much in my opinion but sounds like while I was about to switch to sportmix, there may not be enough price difference to worry about it. That's 40 pounds though but I thought the sportmix was 40 pounds too?

I run Lacy dogs so keeping weight is a pain in the butt, I use to use dimond, loved it my dogs never had a stool issue but I switched to retriever and got the same results for less money(I think its $18). they have shiney coats good weight and poop less (i HATE to clean dog kennels)!!! even my old dogs are doing GREAT on the retriever brand.... jmo

Trapperchick87...I have heard good things about that Retriever hi pro dog food and it is 21.99 where I live...Quite a bit more than what you pay but I live in a somewhat expensive area when it comes to dog food prices...The regular retiever dog food is 18.99 for 50 pounds here in Lake Jackson, TX.

DONT get the regular...when you look for dog food you want some type of meat product listed first NOT corn, dogs cant utilize corn so it just comes right out the other end. its used as a filler in dog food but the hi-pro has meat and bone meal first. even some of you more expensive brands advertise hi protien but if you look at the ingrediants there it is corn being the first ingrediant

Sport mix black all the way. I fed diamond hi energy when I first started hunting. Now 3 years into it I've  fed few different types. In my opion sportmix black is the best but have noticed the prices go up alil bit but I'll still pay it

Alright, just stopped of at Rockys and picked up 100#s of sportmix adult mini 24 18 in the camo bag. 22.00 For 50lb bag. Well see how I like it.

put milk on it, might make it taste better then see if the dogs like it too...lol

well... if you don't like it see if the dogs will eat it. ;D :)

that's a good price for 24-18...a little cooking oil or bacon grease on the food will raise the fat content. let us know how your dogs do on it...

i was feedin diamond naturals, and got my hands on a black bag and didnt like it honestly so i went back to diamond

Why? I don't know, but it is. The dogs will look better, perform better, recover after a hard hunt better and you'll have nice hard stools that you can hit with a golf club. ;D

I switched from Diamond to Sportsmix abot 5 or 6 years ago when Diamond had some bad feed going around killing and making dogs sick. Swtched over to Victor a couple of years ago, but if it goes up in price again I'll be going right back to Sportsmix.
