Do breaking sticks damage a dogs teeth?

Not when used properly, there is method to it. Damaging teeth is the last thing you want to do to your catch dog.

so what's the proper method of using a breaking stick??

As long as they're made out of a softer material like nylon or wood(and you use them correctly) no probs.  Just pull back on the dog's collar(as if you were gonna choke him off), wiggle the corner of the break stick in, and continue to twist/wiggle/insert as you pull back on the dog.   Each time the dog's jaw relaxes, the stick will go further in, preventing his jaws from regripping... eventually allowing the ear to slip out.  Once you know how to use it you can get them off in a couple seconds.

Most bulldog types have a gap at the very back of their teeth insert the stick in the corner as far as you can and like Noah said pulling back at the same time and twist the stick side ways just barely prying the teeth apart, (no jamming it into the teeth) when the mouth has opened slightly you will be able to pull your dog back off he hog, more often you do this you will get it figured out

i've always choked them off but a break stick seems a whole lot better.  thanks

When I hunt with somebody else's bull dog I always use a break stick.  Some of those buggers can hold their breath a long time ;) ;D

In some states/locales possession of a break stick is considered proof you fight dogs.  Is there any local or state law regarding possesion of a break stick, in Texas?

 Need to be careful not to get splinters in the dogs gums if you use the wooden ones. I  use some poly plastic type material to make mine out of its similar to the material most household cutting boards are made out of.
