EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Well I got a walker/cur strike dog hunts out real well he only a year old and has found plenty hogs and DILLERS. A man told me that alot of dogs find Dillers on account of they smell similar to a pig. I don't know how true that is but was wondering if any of yall have had this problem and if I use the ole shock collar on him if they do smell like a pig if it would affect his pig finding skills. Any advise would help

Haha, a few weeks ago crittercatcher and I were on my reservoir and we watched the dogs baying something for about five minutes in some really nasty tangled brush and we were positive it was a coon or a diller! Screaming and shouting at the dogs and they wouldn't leave it when all the sudden it swam the canal and we saw it was a lil boar! Glad we weren't getting shock collar happy to fast. Most dogs that have any brains at all will realize in time that you ain't after nothing but hogs. Keep in I i say that, being the guy who owned the skunk killingest dog to ever breath Texas air and I'm now the proud ownerf a certain red dog who finds those crunch-possums to be quite the delicacy ;D

Yea we make sure its a diller first but I just don't have any idea y he will find pigs then a diller then back to pigs

I got a lil kemmer dog that's about 7 that right out of the box he'll go 1/2 a mile and bay a hog then put him in fresh sign he'll go bay him a skunk or diller. I think they just pop up along the trail and he just get's excited. But most the time when he's barkin' there's a hog on the other end.

i've caught and handled a bunch of live dillers fron when i was a young un . used to sneak up on em and grab the tail and HANG ON  . i ain't never caught a diller that smelled hoggy . i think the dogs just flat don't like em . i been tryin to catch me a live one to work these new pups with to break em . or find me a fresh road kill  ;D  but as for smellin like a hog my exp. is a no

I personally wouldn’t shock a dog that’s hunting that hard .I over look dillow trashing till there a bit older,I’v  shut down a hard hunting dog by getting to rough with the shock collar.  Be patient with a young dog and it will keep him out hunting hard.

Yes sir he hunts hard no doubt and is very consistent on finding hogs but if he comes across a diller all hell breaks lose. It drives me crazy ill have to let it set in my mind for a lil stretch longer I guess.

catch a dillo or find a fresh road kill and each time the dillo touchs the dog light him up good. do it about 3 times in about 20 seconds.

repeat in 3 to 4 day.

repeat again in another 3 or 4 days.

might need a refresher course in about 3 months... maybe not.

Yes the dillers causing me lot of pain and disappointment in him he didn't do it all the time he hadn't found a diller in 2 weeks until yesterday. He found one after he found pigs. It really does drive me insane

if you've ever been diller huntin at night when they are spooked they get to runnin and they make a sound similer to gruntin .i allways figured that is what sets the dogs in motion . and what the hell they are a tastey piece of white meat . they b-b-q real nice

i got a buddy i hunt with a lot and his dog is the best i have ever seen and his dog will only trash on a diller as well. has always trashed on them and couldn't break him...but recently he finding coyotes as well him and another dog trashed on a coyote few weeks ago and that was the second one in about a month. kinda odd i thought
