Title: Red mange ? Post by: martin c. on November 12, 2011, 06:49:46 pm Is red mange contagious from dog to dog?
Is it genetic and can be passed down? What treat with? Thanks! Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: J5 on November 12, 2011, 09:47:48 pm A vet i use had me try a dip called tactic and it works well. It doesnt cure it but the hair comes back and the scratching stops. The dog i use it on has a severe case though. Mightwork better for one that aint as bad as mine.
Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: canitosmomma on November 12, 2011, 10:00:29 pm No it isn't contagious, yes it CAN be genetic, Taktic is excellent to treat. It is usually used once a week for 5 weeks. One of the main things to concern yourself with is secondary infection from the dog itching. Mitaban is used to treat as well. Red Mange stems from an immature/weakened immune system. Generally once the immune system reachs maturity or is restored to full potential there is usually no other occurrences.

There is a good chance the demodex will show up again when the dog is stressed again, ie. Heat cycle, bad cut, hard hint, etc. Demodex is definitely a reason to cull a dog or at least remove it from the gene pool. There are too many good dogs around that don't have issues with demodex to breed or feed a dog that has it.JMO Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: hogaholicswife on November 13, 2011, 08:14:52 am Ivomec daily for 60 days (.10 cc per pound), once the hair comes back you should back them down to every other day for 30 days then gradually wean the dog off. If it comes back you may wind up giving it for the rest of the dogs life.
Stress causes it but if you have a good diet and a clean pen it is manageable most of the time. It is passed on from the gyp to puppies from what I have read. The dog may never be 100% on his hair but if he hunts I would give it a shot. Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: Caughtandhobbled on November 13, 2011, 10:59:45 am Red Mange is genetic and can be passed down, any dog with it should never be bred. Like already mentioned dogs with this problem will be a problem!
Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: SCHitemHard on November 13, 2011, 11:05:43 am to make the immune system stronger feed regular yogurt with no fruit and gound beef with sauerkraut
Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: J5 on November 13, 2011, 12:12:26 pm Ground beef with saurkraut? Im sure there is some reason behind that. Enlighten me please. Never heard of that before.
Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: SCHitemHard on November 13, 2011, 04:21:06 pm to make the kraut it ferments, basically causes bacteria to grow and that causes the "sour" taste, you could also use a small anount of garlic with the kraut, its a natual wormer also
its safe for humans and dogs, i give it to my henry dog first of the month with his wormer and he seems to like it Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: SCHitemHard on November 13, 2011, 05:00:37 pm also henry get a quarter of an apple and some kind of green vegetable daily either green beans, brocolli or collard greens
Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: J5 on November 13, 2011, 05:51:27 pm What i was gettn at was if it had something in it specificly that helped build immunity. I have tried many different things to help my dog but only ivomec and tactic has helped. Looking to help it from the inside out.
Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: DSmith on November 13, 2011, 06:00:38 pm The only thing that I have used to cure red mange, or puppy mange. is a shot of ivermectin, 3 weeks in a row. Knocks it out by the 3rd week and I've never had it come back.
I'd have to make a phone call to get the proper dosage, but it works. I've talked to my vet about it and he says they are not authorized to recommend it as ivermectin is not 'labled' for this type of treatment. But with a 'wink & a nod' he said it will work better than the other and more expensive treatments. Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: TexasHogDogs on November 13, 2011, 06:15:11 pm Mitaban dip from the vet will get rid of it for now but red mange has a tendency to come back in times of stress on the dog. It is genetic.
Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: SCHitemHard on November 13, 2011, 06:45:39 pm isnt there a shot for mange also?
Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: TexasHogDogs on November 13, 2011, 07:14:20 pm I dont remember one but its been a long time since I have dealed with it I culled the dogs with it cause it will show up in the worst way later on . If you heavy linebreed are inbreed any it will show up big time and can become a big big problem.
Title: Re: Red mange ? Post by: martin c. on November 14, 2011, 01:39:58 pm Thanks for the advice. Didn"t want to be a bother. I think ill just cull this puppy.
