Anybody has experience with them?

I'm fixing to get one. Breed looks very interesting l, let's see how we do hog hunting with them.

We do bmc and Ab and pits as a catch dog.

Any comment or advice would be highly appreciate.

I use BMC's and AB's also,i raised this stag to mess around with some varmints when i couldnt hoghunt but he loves to go and is very catchy,ive seen him bark when the others back up but he loves to put teeth on one and is great when there shoats runnin all over the woods,this is jack,hes 2 yrs old now.

Silly question but the gotta have some speed right?

They have A LOT of speed. Stags will mostly catch but they mature much later than bulldogs. Start one too early and you'll ruin it. They have a very clean holding style and will stay out of harms way. PM Silverton Boar Dogs. He's got some nice stags!!!

They are a sight hound made up completey of running dogs,greyhound,deerehound etc. so yes they will outrun anything on your yard and most anything in the woods,thats what they are bred for but do a lot better in open country where they can get up to full speed. You might want to do some research on them before you get into something that may not work for you.

I love the Stags and crosses. I use them in the more open ground. Straight Stags migh not be very hard dogs but they will stop a pig and will get a hold, they don't like a crowd and will not shoulder in to get a bite in most cases. Speed to spare  ;D

I like mine , my male is very fast he was a coyote dog before but took to catching hogs like he been doin it forever , only down fall is when they get in brushy areas they get slowed down , mine are nice calm dogs till they see something to chase , I like them though cool dogs an deadly in open ground , I'm goin to breed a female stag to my pit soon those should be some RCD for sure , if you live close curdog come check mine out

Hey Rocking Roo...is that stag a cross with airedale or Irish terrier or Irish wolf hound??? I like the looks, color, and broken coat not to mention he is built like I like them...nice looking dog...

Yes Rueben,his daddy could pass as a twin for jsh's red stag pictured above and his mother was stag/aerdale. He has thicker bone structure and bigger footed than straight stag,i like this cross also.

Are they open mouth or silent dogs mostly??

Not speaking for everyone here, but mine does not hunt.  He'll stay with me until:

- There is a bay.

- He SEES a hog running.

He will run with the strike dogs if I let him, but rarely do to conserve his energy.  I have seen him BAY on a hog that is not moving, but the second it moves he will catch.  I think it's the movement that triggers his instinct.  He will hunt one up for a short period if it makes it to the brush, but the track has to be really hot.

If you're looking for them to strike pigs, I would look to a different breed.  Mine plays a very specific role for me when I hunt. I use him when:

- I see hog(s) in an open field, then his speed comes into play.

- I am on a runner we can't shut down.

- I arrive at a bay and hogs are running scattered.

HE will not "hit" like a catchdog (some others might) unless they are moving, so I use a traditional catch dog at a bay.  For me, the Stag is a little extra insurance to hold/catch if the hog breaks.

Hope this helps.  They are big dogs, require a lot of room, exercise and feed.

Yes I understand the roll of a stag in hunting the way you describe it and I agree with you.

"INSURANCE TO HOLD/CATCH IF THE HOGS BREAK"  makes to me the best description of the stag use in this hunts.

They are rarely seen down here in Florida , but we'll bring one and see how it works out for us.

Does anybody run the stags with vest ? And cut collar???, or collar is enough for the roll in the hunt???

jsh, very well said, that is how I use mine.

I think that most Stags can run in just a collar.

Do stags can get ukc registered?

cur dog have you looked at wolf hounds? there was a fella not to long ago that had two reg pups for sale that had already seen a hog
