What do is a finsished dog to yall? Gotta be silent? Roll over? What do you look for in a dog to call it finished!?

1.trash broke
2.silent or open doesnt matter they will both get it done but some people preffer either way
3. atleast 2 years old
4. if we are talking about a catch dog he has to know what a bay is run there and catch ear and not let go.
5. if we are talking about a strike dog he has to find a pig when there are pigs in the area and be able to do so 100% of the time
6.be able to roll out and catch multiple hogs

Thats just my checklist i look at every time a "finished" dog rolls around. Its pretty risky buying a finished dog without a trial or going on a hunt with it, most people wouldnt sell theyre finished dogs anyway unless they were getting out JMO

 A dog is never finished in my mind, even a old dog can learn things. Id rather have a mid aged(4-6) HOG DOG that is consistant in the way it hunts and puts a hog at the end of a track. A hog dog is just what it sounds like, nothing but hogs is on its mind. I see alot of 1-3 year old dogs being passed on as finished IMO thats just bull and a sales pitch.

Sorry I didn't specify, I was asking about strike dogs, and I agree with you both. Although..if I dog finds a hog every time u turn it out (if there are hogs in the area) what more could he/she learn?

Just because a dog finds a hog everytime it goes to the woods doesn't mean it's finished.  A dog is only as good as the places your hunting. I wanna be able to take a dog anywhere and have it show me hogs whether I put it on a track, cast him off, or put him in sign. That's what I want, but that's no finished dog, that's just consistent in my book.  I don't own a finished dog or one that exceeds my expectations everytime, and probably won't own one for quite awhile. I know there are dogs out there, and I've hunted behind a few that were as close to that as they come but them dogs were 7 years and up.

finished.

I say she's 99%trashbroke

Because we never know what may be out there that she hasnt seen.

For instance I hunted her around zebras, all types of deer
And of course trashy animals amd nothing
But that don't mean she won't trash on a gator
She never saw one

Just an example..


If there is no signs on ground or in air she won't hunt

But If any sign she goes 400yrd loop

Then 600yrd loop

Then she's gone till bayed..

But she don't sit, stay, shake, only will stay in back truck till telgate drops
And hunts lol

And when I leg she off to get another

I personally go with others that say a dog is finished when it is in the ground. There just is no perfect dog. Show me a finished hog hunter. Is there anyone that knows everything? I would say no but many that know enough to get the job done. You can have them finished dogs I just want some get'r done dogs myself.

I would consider a finished dog about 4/5 years old been on a god awful amount of hogs and can still produce a god awful amount must be 100% trash broke no matter what is in the area. Must stay busy hunting burning the woods down even if there isn't fresh sign he/she better be trying to find some kind of track. Must not get wonder headed and go find cow bones or anything else to chew on. Hogs should be on the brain. The dog must roll out even if it may have just been a lone boar. The dog must have manners and good handle

IMHO a finished dog is a dead dog. Every time out a dog no matter what the age will most likely learn something new. A good dog will learn new tricks to stop and find hogs. When it stops learning it is more then likely too old to hunt or dead. Either way that dog is finished. In the concept of things though if the dog must be called finished. It must do the following:

1) find hogs on a constant basis. No matter how hard or long it has to hunt to find one.
2) as close to 100% trash broke as possible. Every dog will make it's owner a lier at one time or another.
3) have a good handle
4) 3-4 yrs of age and up

If ur hunting a place with no hogs a finished dog should crap one out and bay it... But seriously i think that's a good question because i think alot of guys refer to finished if  they think it's finished training, or if the dog produces pigs consistently.  I figure a finished dog is one that's matured into it's style of hunting and when u put it on the ground, rig it, cast it, or whatever u do to hunt it is normally going to to the same thing time I'n and time out to bay/catch pigs, and i think that dog is going to be pretty old
