Title: What is "Too Young"
Post by: Dogs_Of_War on January 23, 2012, 10:31:58 am
Got an 8 1/2 month old BMC pup that ive seen videos of on her own 40 lb. hogs and is pretty catchy. At what point do you think a pup is capable of stepping up with the big dogs and going to the next level, or does everyone wait till a age no matter the pups progress or size? My family has done it a certain way since I was a kid but were going to leave that out of this so I can hear anyones opinion first.
Thanks for the input to all.

If the pup is mature enough and big enough to keep up i run them with the big dogs.

Man just like Eric said to watch em. I am hunting 3 dogs under a year right now, 1 is 9 months, one is 7.5, one is just learning at 6 months. I take em to the woods one at a time, because buddy they play hard together but work hard by themselves. Just know they are young and can't be pushed like grown dogs, pay attention to em and when they look wore out pick em up!!!

This is the tx he sent me today about her. Nothimg better then hearing good things about pups I've had
"Took her out last night and road hunted for 6 hrs. The entire time she was 5 ft running behind the 2 main start dogs Getn a few hundred yards from the truck by herself out in the woods, then we loaded up and went to a new spot and jumped a 300 pound boar, when I dropped the tailgate she took off with all the dogs after him. When they finally got him shut down and I got there, there she was yappin away 6 inches from his face. She awsome."

Depends on pup.I have been hunting my ybm pup since he was 8 months. He is as mature as most year and a half olds I have seen. He rolls out and works a track like most older puppies. I say if he is mature enough. Hunt him.

yeah i may take a pup out at a young age just for a little exsposier but you have to remember at that age their bones is still growing rapidly and muscels is growing paridly as well . and they are still very clumsy and not really that gracefull while moving if you know what i meen . you know be walking along and trip over a blade of grass or be looking around while running and BAM run into a tree . but at about 9 months i will let em hunt with the big dogs every now and then just not regularly till about a year old . i liken it to letting a ten year old child run a dangerous piece of machinery .

For its first time in the woods you couldn't ask for more. IMO it all depends on the mental maturity of the dog. If its playing grabass the whole time there is a good chance it could get hurt or killed. I will say after watching her in the pen and mock hunts she was all pig with very little puppy and ready for the next step when I let her go.
