Title: What's the best way to get a dog to lead
Post by: Backwoodsboys on January 27, 2012, 09:38:56 pm
I have a pit cd that catches great and hits hard but will not lead at all unless he sees a hog. He will completely lay down and won't move. Open to suggestions on how to fix it

put the collar on tight so it wont slip and start pulling him. they will walk soon enough. if you pay attention to the fit throwing they are winning. most dogs i have leash broke will start walking within about 100 yards. just pull the leash and ignore the fit.

I don't know if it'll work for grown dogs, but with hard headed pups that don't want to walk, I get a long piece of rope or string and tie it to their collar. Then I get another dog that will lead and go for a walk. When the hard head stops just keeping walking with the other dog. And don't pay attention to the one that stopped eventually when you get far enough away and he realizes the "pack" isn't stopping for his shenanigans, instincts should kick in and he should come running to catch up with the pack. After a couple Times he should be ok.

I am a firm believer in a pinch collar. Either for a dog that wants to pull on lead, or a dog that doesn't want to follow a lead. Either way it usually doesn't take much to get the message across. The thing to remember with a pinch is to not have it too loose or it becomes ineffective. It needs to fit fairly snug high on the neck to be effective.  I am sure there are other ways but a pinch collar has always worked great for me.

I pretty much do the same.

Put snap into his collar with some chain so he cant bite it intwo, them take the leadrope and go back to his stomach and put a 1/2 hitch all the way around his stomach, lead him from his belly, he willl figure out the presure will disapear right away when he walks forward, lots of dogs who have never been tied on a chain will struggle due to the natural i am choking from this sttrange thing on my collar choking my neck.  Chain em up and them try the 1/2, prob break him in one day on a chain and them one night walking with the 1/2 hitch belly tie especia;;y if he sees other dogs taking off and wants to follow but u have his belly under control.

I agree with the 1/2 hitch if no time for training..works in a pinch...
but if I have the time I tie the dog on a chain for several hours a day for about 3 days and this usually works...at the end of each training course I try to coax the dog to follow me because I have a meat treat or 2...the dog does not have to follow and I use very little resistance on the leash at this time...if the dog follows I take him for a walk...if he is not ready I do the chain trick again...

I also have a metal 3 foot chain with a snap I use. This I snap to the dog and let him drag it around for several days about 2 or 3 hours at a time and I pick it up now and then and see if he is ready to follow...I usually have the dog wanting my attention and a treat here and there and the dog wants to follow and his mind is off the leash...I test to see if the dog is ready again...if he pulls away I continue with the training...I never force the dog because it takes a little longer that way and the dog then develops fear toward you...something you really don't want...usually takes from 1 to 3 days to have the dog broke to the leash...

another way to get him to lead is to buy a 3 way couple and put him in the middle and let 2 broke dogs drag him for a while or enen one dogol  Better they get tired of dragging him than me...
