Title: Re: Breaking a dog off deer Post by: Skeeterkiller on February 07, 2012, 05:54:12 pm I have used mouse traps baited with deer training scent for years to break puppies before they ever get a chance to run one. For older dogs we use good shock therapy.

Title: Re: Breaking a dog off deer Post by: Reuben on February 07, 2012, 06:33:46 pm Cronk's deer break...8 oz bottle was $15.95 and a 16 oz bottle used to be $25.95. I bought the 16 0z many years ago and it is still about 1/2 full and have broken some real gamey pups off of deer with this deer breaking scent.

You can get it from just about any hound/hunting supply. For puppies I will set 6 to 10 traps spred over 1 acre and turn them out. Most of the time it will break them after a few snaps. I have only had 2 dogs trash on deer after this method was used. I have only been hunting hogs with dogs for 8 years but I coon hunted for 22 years and will train every puppy this way.

Title: Re: Breaking a dog off deer Post by: Skeeterkiller on February 07, 2012, 07:12:59 pm Ruben , what are you doing with the deer breaking scent. I always enjoy learning new tips. Most of the training tips and tricks I have been tought came from old time coon hunters that were hard on dogs that didn't do right and they were real hard on my as a youngster.
Title: Re: Breaking a dog off deer Post by: Reuben on February 07, 2012, 07:31:30 pm the mtn curs I used to raise loved all game especially deer...it was easy enough breaking them off of other off game but deer was another story...I then came up with the cattle prod idea.
I had a deer mount which I tacked on the back side of the mount a white paper towel, a white handkerchief will also work. I then pour a little deer scent on the towel and then walk up to the pup or dog and make sure he can smell the scent...each time the towel touches the pup I light him up. I do it 3 times back to back...come back about three days later and do it again...once the pup or pups smell the deer scent they are looking for a way out... about 3 days alter I walk up again and only touch them one...I usually wait until the pups are about 6 months old and have been baying a pig in the bay pen or a staged hunt... might have to refresh their memory in a few months but very unlikely... don't have to use a deer mount... a 3 or 4 ft. long stick with the towel tied to the end of it will work... Title: Re: Breaking a dog off deer Post by: UNDERDOG on February 07, 2012, 07:40:24 pm With these cur dogs I have less trouble than the hounds and beagles...We (for pups)used to take a deer gland and make a hot wire "bee hive" around it,turn the pups out in the yard and they will find it ;D do this a few times and they will be deer broke before they ever get started. For older, young dogs already hunting I like to try and set them up or catch them at it and shock them then try and get them on hogs the same hunt. The above works great for pups before the ever get started and they will not relate the correction to you. Title: Re: Breaking a dog off deer Post by: Skeeterkiller on February 07, 2012, 07:41:08 pm I like the cattle prod tip. If cronks ever starts selling money spending breaking scent I am gonna get me some and use the prod tip to break my wife.
