Title: Taken yankees on their first hog hunt.
Post by: hogdog05 on February 18, 2012, 11:09:31 pm
Some friends of mine did a hunt swap.  They went to Nebraska and hunted deer, and the Nebraska boys came down here and hog hunted.  So my friend calls me and asks if I can take em on a hog hunt.  I said sure no problem.  We meet up and have a good breakfast while I kinda explain what's gonna go down and the inherit dangers.  Needless to say them boys had no idea what was in store for them.  I had two guys with me that are "seasoned veterens with dogs", and four yanks.  We hunted a nice place with lots of cuts through the woods so its pretty easy to get around.  Turn out the dogs and they bay about 1.5 miles from us.  We get up there to the bay and I want these boys to see the bay and Tue catch.  Well by the time everyone gets there the pig breaks and runs 200 yards and bayed again.  We get in there and I send in a newer CD.  She grabs and we rush in.  I was the first one there in the brair thicket and its a goodun.  He is tossing my bulldog in the air and just lookin straight at me.  He never would turn from me so I couldn't get a leg.  He shakes all Tue dogs and starts to move out.  I knew I had to do something as it was kinda goin south in a hurry.  So I put two bullets in him from less than 6 feet.  Pig never bothers to acknowledge I shot him.  He moves about 20 yards and backs up to a tree.  I walk up to him as my friend catchs the bulldog who needs to be tended to.  I get 5 feet from him and shoot him between the eyes and he comes out after me.  I begin to back up and Fire another round, but I tripped and fell on my back. This boar hog gets on top of me and goes to work.  I did everything I could to keep him off of me, swatting, kicking, trying to bear hug him just to get some relief.  My partners see this and turn loose a bulldog who has never seen a pig.  Somehow the pig gets off of me and this new bulldog is trying to catch.  But I need to put this pig down.  I was finally able to shoot 3 more times and finally kill him.  I guessed him right around the 300 mark.  Cur dogs rolled but didn't come up with anything.  We moved on up and my dogs went about 3/4 of a mile cross the trinity river and bayed.  While we were listen to them two nice pigs run across the road right to our left.  So I go to where their bayed and somehow call them off and they swam back.  (Don't like doing that but I didn't need to swim that river with these guys).  Came hack and put em on that, trail.  They, rolled on and finally bayed.  We get in there and I see a white hog and he is BIG.  Send in the bulldog who has never seen a pig till today and he hit the first hog he comes to like a freight train.  It wasn't the big one but hey a pig is a pig.  I noticed on they way to the bay that one of dogs was not there.  Anyways one of the yanks stuck this boar 175-200#ish.  Man were they pumped.  I looked at my garmin to find my other dog and it showed him swimming the river 4 times but back on our side and moving.  Well it didn't take me long to figure out I didn't have signal.  We walked back to the four wheelers and it showed him bayed at 1.3 miles.  Off we went. Drove about 800 yards from him and sent in some reinforcements.  As soon as they got there I had squealing.  We drove about 40 yards from em and I saw we didn't need no bulldogs.  Went in their and legged the last one.  Man was he a beast.  LOL. Guys had and awesome time and a pretty good story to tell.

Pistol is a ruger..30 carbine.  We skinned the head to boil it and dug bullets out of it.  Just an barely missing my mark.  I shot head and body shots with the shot that finally dropped him was a body shot.  First pig I've ever had walk off like that with that gun.
