Title: Crossing breeds - on a different note Post by: KevinN on February 26, 2012, 01:40:21 pm Im wondering how long it would take to establish a standard. For instance, if you take Full blooded dogs from say - catahoula, BMC, Red Bone, and Pitt breeds and crossed them up. Not even worrying about working ability. Just trying to establish a standard size, weight and color. Selectively breeding, culling for a specific appearance. How long do you think it would take?

but one thing for sure...the more you know about dog genetics the faster you will get to the end product. IM JUST CURIOUS AND WONDERING WHY YOU WOULD NOT CULL FOR WORKING ABILITY IN A WORKING DOG. CULLING FOR A SPECIFIC APPERANCE OR LOOK IS WHAT IS WRONG WITH ALOT OF THE HUNTING BREEDS TODAY. JUST WONDERING.

In our little experiment if you want to wait until they are tested dogs before you cull you can but this is going to significantly increase the time it takes to standardize. Remember my original question. How long to standardize four crosses into a breed?

If you bred the ones you wanted based on appearance I would not think real long 3 or 4 breedings you should have mostly standard pups with one odd ball here and there.
