Might look at the 222 over 20 gauge that is what is on my dads four wheeler.  Not over cheap but works well.

I have a marlin lever action 45-70 & it is a great gun its small only 40" long and will hold 5 plus 1 in chamber and I havent had anything run when I pull the trigger and ive killed hogs and deer with it. Its a great gun for close up and has plenty of knock down power

cant go wrong with a lever action 30-30.

243 is a good fast bullet , but like wwwendler said 3030 is a hog killin beast

might sound wussy but I hunt with .223 (m16) single shot. No knock down power but the bullet fragments and tumbles. Takes skill but good distance and flat shooting. Dropped a half dozen deer were they stood. I like skill over brute force. 6mm was a good one to semi auto.

7.62x39. typical round for the sks and ak. sks rifles are cheap with a good cyclic rate with good punching pwr at close range and out to a couple hundred yds. u can wag them around in the woods, drop them in the mud, sand and rain and they are like the energizer bunny, they just keep firing and firing.

x2 on the 7.62x39.

Cheap ammo, easy to find and even buy in bulk, well proven round, perfect in my opinion for what your after. Makes a dandy deer round for mid range and closer shots as well and is not bad on the recoil either.

all the calibers you listed can and will knock a hog down but they will also cripple one up just as easy. all about shot placement. 308 in any rifle is hard to beat. Its a NATO round so there will be ammo out there when there isnt in those other calibers. Also there is a larger selection to choose from at cheaper prices.

I think I would not go with a single shot. Look at the circuit judge. I am waiting for the 44 to come out. It will accompany my marine 357 with a Burris fast fire.

If I had one shot on a moving hog out to 50 yards it would be a .44 or a 45/70 but I like all the calibers you listed including the 30-30 except the .243.

I dont believe I would want a single shot either. I have a ruger carbine in 44 mag. Its short, light and packs a punch.

Ive got a circuit judge and i love it ! Its short , light to carry, and you can shoot 45 long colt or 410. its hard to beat for close - medium range brush gun. The only problem ive had with it was actually making my self carry it in the brush ! Its such a beautiful gun that i hated to get a scratch on it. I finally convinced myself that that is what i got it for and im sure pleased with the performance on hogs.

i was thinking of a HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON, never had one but they look well built and could take some abuse,, I like the singel shot easy simple, one shot one kill

h&r 357 would work good and you dont have to worry about it passing through and hitting a dog like on the other rounds

I would say go for more than a single shot, what if you got two pigs runnin by? I just bought a Rossi 44mag lever action 16" barrel, 8+1. Plenty of power, light (about 5lbs), and easily good out to 100 yards. Can really do some damage with the hornady lever evolution ammo.

x2 Yeah I`ve shot a marlin 44 mag with the leverloution rounds and it`ll kill anything you aim it at under about 200 yards..my cousin actually killed a spike with it last year at 320 yards.that`s probably not your ideal range for that gun though. I think it`s best as a brush-close range gun..jmo

I have a H&R .444 its a single shot with interchangable barrels I haven't had anything take another step even with a bad shot. It also has more range then a .44. The only bad part is ammo is a little hard to come by.

id go with a leveraction to but id go with the 357 cal it will knock a hog dog....and the other reason i like the 357 is for the fact if i get in a bind and have to buy shells on the road u can run 38specials through it and trust me they will knock a hog down to

I carry a 30 carbine with a laser sight on it for night time and really never had any problems with it I like it because it is short and light and can take a beating

If you are wanting a single shot then I would recoment a CVA scout. they are lighter, more accurate, cheaper than an H&R. You can get them for a lil over $200 in a stainless gun with a fluted barrel.
