Building hog pen to work at least two dogs in...how big should we make it? Circle or squared ??

If you are building a bay pen build it tall. You would be suprised to see how high they can jump.

how tall? higher than 6ft?

I have a 80x80 made out of cattle panels with a pipe top rail. It works real nice only thing ill recommend would be put some tin or something around the bottom.

Depends on the size of the hogs. Six feet will keep most pigs in. I was on one about ten feet high and the went to the top where the hog's body hit but did not make it over. But that pen is used a lot by many people. If I was building one I would go six feet. I have just heard people say pigs can't jump but I know they can of they want to.

i would go with a round pen if not cut your conners that way a hog cant just run to a corner and sit up.....it will help teach ur pups how to sit one down and work it

Some do. Some only have one or two corners, like a rectangle with a rounded end and a square end. Some pens put corners in just so the hog can find a place to set up.

Good idea bout the corners . I want that hog running and that way dogs have to learn how to make him stop! Think we'll round off three corners. It's gonna be 32x48

you can run 2 fences parallel to each other however wide you will want the bay pen to be. Remember one side will have the gate... on each end measure the distance between the fences...let's say the fences are 30 feet apart, divide that in 2 and you have 15 feet and you can drive a stake at 15 feet and this stake is exactly even with both fence ends. Now you can use the 15 foot rope or string as the measurement for the  posts to connect the fences and the pen will look oblong when completed and will look uniform.

do the 15 feet measurement, stake and string, on both ends...makes as nice looking bay pen.

I don't understand this.  Are you dividing a 30' pen?  any way you can post a drawing?

draw a rectangle and measure the short sides of the rectangle. lets say the rectangle is 30x45.

the mid point of the 30 feet side would be 15 feet... drive a stake at that location...

tie a 15 foot string to the stake. tie it so that it can slip around the stake so that the string can always maintain its 15 feet length no matter which way you rotate it.

when you pull the string tight it should reach a corner of the rectangle. keep it tight and walk around to the other end. if you notice you made a perfect 1/2 circle and it connected to the other end...

use that string to decide where to set the posts dor the fence,

So when building the pen the long sides of the rectangle will be completed  along with the gate...once this is done then follow the procedure above to build the ends...

you can do this on paper...

when completed the width is still 30 feet and the length at its longest point will be 75 feet.

the 45 ft length plus 15 ft on one end and 15 ft on the other gives you 75 ft at its longest point which is when the string is exactly facing straight out at the mid point of the 1/2 circle.

I am not a carpenter or even a fence builder but have made 2  baypens like this...and if I can do it anyone can :)

you can make it any size you want I just picked these numbers...but this way you don't have any corners and you get more length than a round pen so that the pups/dogs can learn how to stop a hog that wants to break bay...

I really could not picture what in the world he was talking about.  Thanks for taking the time to do that!

i like mine to be round, no corners. Teach them dogs how to shut the hog down. With corners the hog will back up right there and let the dogs bay. Mine was about 3/4 acre. worked good i think cause my 2 bay pen dogs take me money and trophies home every time we run them at Callaways bay pen. I think it will make em better in the woods to cause they learn how to shut down the hog with out any help from any obstructions, such as a corner in the pen or a creek. Example a round pen the hog can run and run in circles till the dog shuts it down. The dog learns how to controll the hog. opposed to a square pen the hog runs to the corner and lets the dog bay him. I think thats just teaching the dog to chase it till the hog stops or comes to an opsticale, such as a creek and a round pen teaches them how to shut it down and controll.

I like the round too. I like the ones made of metal roof panels so they are smooth. You can start with wire to get the shape and then add panels because fence panels or any wire will wear out. Get it up and then look for people giving away scap metal roof panels cheap. They can't get a nose in it.

To make it round put small post in what you want to be the middle. Put a loop in a rope and put it over the center post and figure how big you want it and then use the rope to measure where the pen wall posts should go. When done you can pull the center post out. I have a simple mind so I keep it simple.
