Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: TexasLacy on March 08, 2012, 07:09:40 pm Is it your draft induction motor? sounds like it. There are a few things to check before changing that part. Could be quite a few other things, Don't spend your money just yet...
Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: coyote hunter on March 08, 2012, 07:33:01 pm I'm an a/c tech too. Let me know if I can help
Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: charles on March 08, 2012, 07:34:45 pm for you hvac guroos. is the blower fan (squirrel cage fan) what they consider or call an inducer wheel?
Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: grittydog on March 08, 2012, 07:36:22 pm This what it should look like. Mine is missing a few blades. I live near Houston and hopefully I can just go and pick one up.

An inducer motor or fan is actually the heating ventilation on a fuel fired furnace. Its a small motor near the burners mist of the time. The blower wheel is a bigger motor inside of the squirrel cage usually in the bottom ofvthe inside unit. Somewhere on the inside of that unit is a data plate. Should have a model and serial number on it. You'll need those numbers to find the right wheel. Oh that data plate could be in the furnace section or in the blower cabinet. While your getting that wheel id get another motor capacitor. Just a couple bucks and is a simple part to switch. Pm me if you wanna talk over the phone about it
Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: TexasLacy on March 08, 2012, 07:55:39 pm an inducer wheel is on your draft fan. It is called a forced draft as opposed to just letting the exhaust naturally draft due to heat. It pretty much comes standard on most furnaces nowadays. Gritty dog, how big is it? Charles, your blower, and draft induction fan are two different things. They move totally different amounts of air.
Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: TexasLacy on March 08, 2012, 07:57:38 pm While your getting that wheel id get another motor capacitor. Just a couple bucks and is a simple part to switch good advice, definetely change the start cap Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: charles on March 08, 2012, 08:01:22 pm thats what i thought txlacy. 1 site showed the blower wheel or squirrle cage and another site should something like what you explained near the heater unit. iv always heard them refered to as a cage or blower wheel.
Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: TexasLacy on March 08, 2012, 08:06:02 pm we just call them blowers, before I got into the business, I always heard of them called squirrel cage fans. Same thing...
Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: UNDERDOG on March 08, 2012, 08:24:36 pm This what it should look like. Mine is missing a few blades. I live near Houston and hopefully I can just go and pick one up. (http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn137/grittydog/LA22LA128.jpg) You should be able to find that at. http://m.grainger.com/mobile/search/hvacr/ecatalog/N-bi9?Nh=14913&T=HVACR&tab=browse They have a few stores around Houston Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: buddylee on March 08, 2012, 09:08:34 pm If your wheel rusted away and broke it's a good time to have a qualified technician come check your unit out. Most gas furnaces will develop cracks or rusted out holes in the heat exchanger. These can put you to sleep permanately.

Most gas furnaces will develop cracks or rusted out holes in the heat exchanger. These can put you to sleep permanately. good advice. In the interest of saving you money, It is an easy enough process. If you dont have a camera scope, you can use a flashlight and a mirror. Shine the light in where the fire goes in at, and use a telescoping mirror to look for light coming out of any cracks. If they are there, they will show up then. But, like Buddylee said, you will always be better off having a trained professional give it a once over just to make damn sure. Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: grittydog on March 08, 2012, 10:37:17 pm I already have it out, I will call around in the morning and pick one up. Im glad it went out now and not in August. What sucks is the unit is only 6 yrs old. Thanks for the replies

Its not that tho.
Its worse when going from heat to a/c. Real strong moldy / musty / dusty / damp like stagnated water type smell. Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: grittydog on March 09, 2012, 07:34:12 am Have you ever had them cleaned? Do you have the humidity we have in East Tx?
Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: TexasLacy on March 09, 2012, 07:53:37 am Probably have mold in the duct bro. Hire a company that uses a camera scope.
Sounds like you're in to spend some $$$ Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: TexasLacy on March 09, 2012, 10:32:18 am Also, that roto brush system can and will clean the duct fairly decently, but if you don't KILL the mold. Youll just be chasing your tail.
Title: Re: HVAC Question Post by: grittydog on March 09, 2012, 12:55:46 pm This is what it looked like after it went out.
