Title: Silver Phoenix Chickens
Post by: jimco on March 08, 2012, 09:29:56 pm
I know a few of you guys have game cocks. I'm getting some week old Silver Phoenix chicks. They are an Ornamental chicken that
supposedly does well free roaming. My question is, after I am finish with brooding and getting them to the age to be able to turn them
loose on a piece of wooded property, do I need to build some sort of coop for them to roost in at night or will they be alright roosting
in the trees? The breed is well-suited to properties where it can roam at large, thriving best when given a good deal of freedom. (http://)(http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z349/eelcat1/Studio_GldnPhnxCk_7831_L.jpg)

my chickens run free range and roost in the trees. and they do just fine but iv lived here 20 yrs and iv got all the varmints killed off and iv got big white dogs to watch my land. great pyrenees are yur best protectors over yur fowl.  if they fly like a game bird they will be fine. good luck

you will loose a few to varmits and owls but nature is supposed to cull the slow dumb ones . free range them and every year you will have better ,stronger chickens by natural selection . thats how i raise my game fowl and very seldom does a cull reach maturity .

Hey, Monty or halfbreed, my chickens are 12 weeks old now. I have a dozen of them in a 6 x 10 flight pen. How old do they have to be
before I can turn them loose on the wooded property?

I have had a few game hens around here that would pass up the hen house just to find a limb to roost on.
